Genshin Impact is an immensely popular gacha game, developed by Shanghai-based developer HoYoverse. Given Genshin Impact’s sheer popularity, you likely have a friend or two who plays the game. And you’ll be pleased to know that you can actually play with friends in Genshin – up to four, including yourself. Here’s how you can play with friends in Genshin Impact.

How do you unlock Co-Op mode?

Unfortunately, you can’t play in Co-Op right-away after starting the game. You’ll have to reach Adventure Rank 16, which will take you a few hours of playing the game. To reach Adventure Rank 16, you’ll need to explore Mondstadt and complete quests, which will both increase your Adventure Rank. After this initial hitch, you’ll be able to enter Co-Op mode almost whenever you’d like.

How do you play with friends?

Once you’re at least Adventure Rank 16, you’ll be able to join your friends’ worlds from the Friends menu, found within the Paimon menu. Simply click the button on your friend’s icon which reads “Request to Join,” and you’ll be transported to their world so long as they accept your request.

However, instead of the “Request to Join” button, you might see that it says something along the lines of “Minimum World Level” followed by a number. This occurs when the person you wish to join has a higher World Level than you. This mechanic prevents players of a lower World Level accessing materials that they otherwise can’t in their own worlds. However, players who are above another player’s World Level can join them without an issue.

You should also take note that you cannot join a friend who is on a different server to you. For example, players in the EU server can only join other players in the EU server. They cannot join players in the US or Asia servers.

How do you add friends?

To add a specific friend in Genshin Impact, you’ll need to obtain their UID. The UID is a string of numbers you’ll see at the bottom right of your screen while the game is open. You can send and accept Friend Requests from the Friend section of the Paimon menu, with the option to add friends by searching their UID.

Does Genshin Impact have crossplay?

Very simply, yes! You’ll be able to join your friends on other consoles, so long as they are on the same Genshin Impact server as you.

Genshin Impact boasts a remarkably vast open world for players to explore. There's so much too see and so many monsters to smite, you might just want to bring an IRL friend or two along for the ride. The new RPG from developer miHoYo lets you team up with three of your pals to hunt for treasure and challenge threatening foes. However, you won't be able to play with your friends until you increase your Adventure Rank, and there are few limitations to co-op play you'll need to bear in mind.

Here's what you need to do to unlock the multiplayer functionality and invite your friends to join you in exploring the world of Teyvat in the free-to-play adventure.

How to unlock multiplayer in Genshin Impact

You'll need to have achieved Adventure Rank 16 in order to invite friends to join you in Genshin Impact. Any friends you invite will also need to have reached Adventure Rank 16.

This is not the same as your Character Level, which is increased using consumable items. If you're playing on PS4, you can check your adventure level quickly by pressing the Options button to bring up the main menu. Below your name and signature, you'll see your current Adventure Rank.

Here's how to increase your Adventure Rank and earn Adventure EXP:

Complete the main story quests in the prologue, referred to within the Quest Menu as Archon Quests. These include visiting the city of Mondstat for the first time, and clearing out three wind temples that are a short jog away from the city.
After you've visited the Adventurer's Guild in Mondstat and gained access to the Adventurer's Handbook in your main menu, acquaint yourself with the experience tab. By activating waypoints, opening chests, and cooking food, you'll earn more Adventure EXP.
Once you've exhausted Archon Quests and the Adventurer's Handbook, you'll need to get exploring! Find new areas, fast-travel waypoints, treasure chests, Statues of the Seven, and Abyssal Domain mini-dungeons to flesh out your world map. (It's a big one, so don't be shy about venturing far afield! You can always fast-travel back to familiar territory if you find yourself in danger.)
Once you hit Adventure Rank 12, you'll access daily missions, which are another low-hanging source of Adventure EXP.

You can add up to 45 friends in Genshin Impact, but you can only play with three at a time. To invite friends, access the main menu (via the options button on PS4) and select Friends. Tab over to the second menu, which shows two people and a plus sign. From there, you can add friends by inputting their nine-digit UID number. (You can locate your own in the main menu, just beneath your character portrait.) Once added to your friends list, you'll automatically see when your pals are online.

Genshin Impact does support cross-platform play between PS4, PC, iOS, and Android.

Here's how it works, depending on the size of your squad: If you're only playing with one friend, you'll each have two party members to swap between. With two friends, the host will be able to swap between two chracters, while each guest gets one. If you've got a full foursome, each player controls one character.

There are a few limitations to co-op play to bear in mind. As previously stated, you can only invite three friends at a time. You also won't be able to progress the main story in multiplayer mode, so leave the Archon Quests for your solo sessions. Finally, your guests won't be able to open chests, make offerings to Statues of the Seven, or collect key items while they're visiting your world. So don't forget to share the wealth by rotating host duties among your friends!

Genshin Impact is a gacha game with a difference, and that difference is that the gacha elements are hidden under a fairly complex and interesting JRPG. There’s huge shades of Breath Of The Wild about Genshin Impact, and while few would seriously argue it comes close to Zelda’s quality, it does have one advantage over Hyrule; you can play it in co-op. Kind of. After a while.

Co-Op will only become available once you reach Level 16 in the game. It takes around two to three hours to get this far in the game, so you’ll need to have gone and explored the world on your own for a while before you start getting your friends involved to help you out. It’s an unusual approach to Co-Op, which is usually available either from the off or after a short tutorial, but it should at least mean that everyone is fairly decent by the time you can get a squad together.

At the bottom of your screen, you’ll see UID then a string of numbers. This is your unique identifier, and you’ll need to either give this to a friend or get them to tell you theirs so you can add each other in the game. You send and accept Friend Requests from the Friend section of the Pause menu, and from here can either invite them to your game (or add them to your block list), provided you’re both at Level 16.

The main missions cannot be completed in co-op at all, so you’re best off focusing on these while you reach Level 16, leaving the side quests and world quests for co-op. However, you can do Domains and Bosses (except for Stormterror) in co-op.
