Advance child tax credit turbotax

You’ll need to enter any advance Child Tax Credit payments you (and your spouse) received last year on your return now. Refer to your (and your spouse’s) IRS letter 6419 to find the total amount of advance Child Tax Credit payments you received in 2021. If you don’t have it, go to the IRS to verify exactly how much you received.

It’s important to enter the exact amount you received on your tax return now. Not having the right amount can cause delays in processing your return and any refund you’re owed, if any.

Once you have your letter or amount ready,

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open or continue your return.
  2. Search for Child Tax Credit and Continue.
  3. Answer the question on the Let's start with where you spent the most time in 2021 screen and Continue.
  4. On the Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments screen, answer Yes, enter the amount from your letter in the Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments box, and Continue.
    • If your spouse also received payments, be sure to enter that amount as well as a combined total for both of you.
  5. Answer the questions on the following screens, confirm your amount on the Let's recheck your advance Child Tax Credit payments screen, and Continue.

What if I'm not filing my taxes with my child's other parent?

IRS letter 6419 and amounts received are specific to the person who received them. Regardless of your filing situation, if you didn't receive any advance child tax payments from the IRS, enter 0. If you did receive advance child tax payments and have IRS letter 6419 addressed to you, enter the amount that’s on your letter.

If your child’s other parent received advance child tax payments, but you didn't (even if they gave you some of the money), do not enter the amount they received.

If your child’s other parent is claiming your child this year, but you still received payments, you still need to enter the amount on your IRS letter 6419.

Keep in mind: The IRS distributed advances of your Child Tax Credit amount for this year, as payments last year. They estimated how much total Child Tax Credit you’re eligible for based on your last return, split that amount in half, and sent it in monthly payments. So now that you’re filing your taxes, you’ll get the remaining amount. While the credit you get on your return now might seem smaller, remember that you already got some of the credit as advance payments.

Does TurboTax include Child Tax Credit?

You and/or your child must pass all seven to claim this tax credit. TurboTax Tip: If you have a dependent that doesn't meet the requirements of the 2021 Child Tax Credit, you might be able to claim them as a dependent and qualify for the Other Dependent Tax Credit.

Why is TurboTax not giving me my Child Tax Credit?

If you did not earn at least $2500 you cannot receive the child tax credit. Beyond that amount the CTC you receive is affected by your tax liability and the amount you earned. You might not get the full $2000 of CTC.
