Call of Duty: Black Ops III's Campaign mode is set in the distant future where soldiers are fused with high-tech military weaponry. The soldiers are now the weapons.

The Campaign features a cinematic style that the Call of Duty franchise is known for. Unfortunately, the story doesn't follow the same plotline from the previous two Black Ops games, other than a brief nod to a specific bit of weaponry.

There are a total of eleven missions in the Campaign that can be played over five difficulties.

Campaign Multiplayer

For the first time since Call of Duty: World at War, Black Ops III's Campaign will support four-player co-op! The levels in the Campaign are a bit more open, allowing players to tackle objectives with a different strategy each time.

Score and Levels

The Campaign features a full leveling system similar to the Multiplayer. This system is both for single player and multiplayer. Earn score in each campaign to attain player levels and weapon levels. Each time a player level is earned, a Fabrication Kit is unlocked. Fabrication Kits are used to unlock weapons and cybercores.

The XP earned in the campaign is altered based on the difficulty level.

50% Brutally difficult and entirely unforgiving. You will die with a single shot about 90% of the time; however, enemies are not as aggressive as Veteran.

More XP is earned by completing Accolades. Each mission has a set of challenges known as Accolades. Some are simple challenges, such as not dying throughout the mission. Other challenges get creative, such as killing an enemy with certain structures in the environment.

Safehouse

After mission two, you will return to a Safehouse where you can view all Collectibles, reselect missions, change your wardrobe, and unlock items. Interact with the Armory to unlock weapons for the loadout used in missions. Interact with the Cyber Core Station to unlock special abilities for your player. Interact with the Combat Immersion station to play a horde mode against AI opponents.

Armory

Like the Multiplayer, weapons in the Campaign Armory must be unlocked by reaching a certain level and using a Fabrication Kit. Attachments are unlocked by reaching weapon levels, and camos are unlocked by earning a set amount of kills.

In addition to weapons, Lethals, Tacticals, and Wildcards can be unlocked in the same fashion and added to each custom loadout.

A new selection called Tactical Rig is added to loadouts in multiplayer. These can be unlocked and then upgraded with Fabrication Kits.

Sensory augmentations reduce the shock from flashbangs and explosives, and cause muscles to finch and spasm less when being shot. Reactive force dispersion reduces actual damage taken from explosives.
Limb optimizations and micro-thrusters make it possible to run along walls. Engage mini-thrusters for an extra boost mid-jump by pressing the jump button again.
Spoof biometric locks on weapons to pick up and use any weapon found on the battlefield. Biometric spoofing works on explosives as well.
Automated, one-time use repair system. Restores systems to combat functionality when in critical condition. Provides limited movement and use of some weapons during the repair process. Detonates an electrostatic blast to drive away enemies before repairs begin.
Very short range automated defense system. Will discharge lethal amounts of electriicty on contact to an enemy within hand to hand range. Electric discharge will arc to multiple enemies.
Active Armor system. Uses repulsor technology to repel incoming grenades to a distance where they are no longer a threat. Can also repel incoming rockets.

Cyber Core Station

Cyber Cores are upgradable perks in the Campaign. There are seven perks under three different cores. Only one core can be until player rank 20. The Cyber Cores must be unlocked in a set order in the unlock tree. Once one is unlocked, it can be upgraded once.

Control Core

Temporarily disable 3 enemy robots and turrets. Can affect 5 targets simultaneously.
Hack into 2 enemies' combat augmentations to force them to seize up. Enemies will have to fight against their own combat gear to move or shoot. Causes augmentation joints to bend in hazardous, often fatal ways, leaving targets permanently debilitated.
Causes havoc with vital servos in 2 robots' locomotion systems. Can affect 3 targets simultaneously.
Hack a robot's power cell, causing it to overload and surge deadly current. Enemy roots nearby will be disabled for a short time. Before detonation, take over the robot's guidance systems and send it running into a crowd of enemies.
Tear through a robot's armor plating then rip out its power cell. The power cell can be thrown like a grenade. It is volatile enough to disable other robots on impact. Extends blast radius of the core.
Hijack an enemy turret or robot's control systems and pilot it remotely. The hijacked root can only operate within a limited range. Decrease the amount of time it takes to hijack a A.S.P. And P.A.W.W.S.
Hack an enemy turret or robot's targeting protocols, turning it friendly. It will shut down after a limited time. Control two robots at a time.

Martial Core

Temporarily boost motor controllers to move faster, aim better, change weapons and handle equipment more quickly. Extends active time.
Deploy a defensive smokescreen around you. Robots caught in the smokescreen are temporarily disabled, and the smokescreen will interfere with enemy's combat sensors.
Scramble the biometric locks on 2 enemies' weapons, locking them from being used for a time. Lock down 4 enemies' weapons.
Blend into the environment and become nearly invisible, except to very close enemies. Sprinting and shooting will still draw attention. Extends activation time.
Power boost to all motor systems for a quick blitz forward. Any enemies in your path will be hit with fatal concussive force. Extend blitz distance.
Launch into a lethal strike, then follow up with another deadly melee attack on a nearby enemy. Can follow through into a third lethal strike on another nearby enemy.
Use repulsor technology to unleash a concussive wave. Nearby enemies will be thrown back. Fatal up close. Leap forward before detonating the concussive wave.

Chaos Core

Take over 3 enemies' combat sensors to emit a high pitch screech from their earpiece and a bright strobe from their optics. Only affects human combatants. Can affect 5 targets simultaneously.
Hack enemy combat sensors to simulate an airborne combat robot attack. Spoofed combat robots act as decoys. Extends the size of the simulated attack, affecting a large area.
Deadly elector-statically charged open-palm strike which electrocutes both humans and robots. Short cool down time. Powerful currents will arc from the impact and affect nearby combatants.
Hack into infrastructure controllers for fuel, power, and explosive storage containers, causing them to detonate. Affects a wider targeting field.
Short-circuits the power control of a robot, causing it to erupt in flames before exploding into a fireball. Immolation can also hack detonator controls on any explosives carried by an enemy to detonate them immediately.
Release dozens of Fireflies, nano-bots with super-bright LED strobes. Fireflies move to new targets when enemies die until they run out of power. Also releases incendiary nano-bots, which will burst into flames on contact with an enemy.
Focus a directed energy wave to induce violent muscle convulsions. Leaves combatants too exhausted to move. Affects a wider targeting area.

Combat Immersion

Combat Immersion is a survival game mode. The goal is to survive 16 waves of increasingly stronger enemies and kill them as quickly as possible. The simulator can be accessed from the “Combat Immersion” option as the Safehouse.

All weapons, attachments, wildcards, and tactical rigs can be used when playing in Combat Immersion. They do not need to be unlocked like the rest of the campaign.

Depending on your score you can get a bronze, silver or gold medal. A gold medal is awarded at 27,500 points. If you are a real game completionist you might also want to get the "Tried and True" decoration which is awarded at 35,000 points.

Despite its issues, though, the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 campaign does not deserve a fraction of the hate it has received over the past few years. The game's story shows Treyarch experimenting in a way that one would not expect from Call of Duty, and that is a huge part of what led to the campaign's downfall.
