Keratin treatment is one of the easiest ways to make your hair smooth and manageable.

But it does take a lot of time and money to get it done. So it is important to make sure that you maintain your keratin-treated hair well.

Otherwise, the results will wear off pretty soon and you will be left with your same old frizzy hair.

You should start maintaining keratin-treated hair from the moment you get it done.

I’m sure you must have heard of how important it is to not disturb your hair or apply pressure on it for a few days after you get it done. If you do you risk disturbing the hair shape and structure and ruin the straightening effect.

It is also important to keep your hair away from water after getting the treatment done. Of course, there are keratin treatments like the keratin express treatment that allows you to wash your hair after getting it done.

But if you are getting a full-blown Brazilian keratin treatment, this is probably the most important thing you should take care of.

Do not wash your hair for the next three days or 72 hours, unless you want to mess with your smooth and sleek results.

Why should I wait for 72 hours for washing hair after keratin treatment?

Keratin is not a fast-absorbing substance. You need to leave it on your hair for a few days to make sure that it is properly absorbed. That’s why your treatment wears off really fast if you wash your hair before 72 hours.

It will also affect the quality of the results of the keratin treatment and your hair will not be smooth and sleek. Some of the most important reasons why you should wait before washing your hair are:

Keratin is malleable and the pressure on your hair while taking a shower can alter the shape of your hair.

If you are looking to get sleek and straight hair, it will not be possible if you wash your hair before the stipulated time because you will probably end up with dents.

The substance needs to absorb properly into your hair to give you the best results.

You don’t want your money to go down the drain by ruining your keratin-treated hair. If you wash your hair before three days, your results will wear off soon.

Moisture can interrupt the treatment and affect the quality of the results. The substances on your hair can dilute the substance and affect the performance of the treatment.

Your hair needs to come in contact with plenty of oxygen while getting the treatment so you don’t want the moisture to interrupt the oxygen supply.

How to prepare for your first post-treatment wash?

So the day has finally come. You have waited for three days after the keratin treatment and now you can wash your hair. But there are certain things you have to take care of before taking the leap and showering.

You have to make sure that your hair is prepared for the shower. The first and the most important thing to look into are the products that you will be using while washing your hair. This includes shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and even hair creams.

It is important to stock up on these products because you have to make sure that you are using keratin-friendly products on your hair. What exactly are keratin-friendly products?

Keratin-friendly products do not contain substances, namely sulfates and sodium chlorides, that wash off the keratin from your hair. So it is important to stock up on sulfate and sodium chloride-free products after getting a keratin treatment done.

If you got your keratin treatment done from a salon, you will definitely find a suitable shampoo and conditioner for your hair. But you can also find these in stores or online.

How to wash hair after keratin treatment?

While washing your hair, you have to put a little bit of effort and make some changes in your hair wash routine. Let us take a look at some of the most important things you should look into while washing your keratin-treated hair.

Use a microfiber towel to dry hair– A microfibre towel is one of the best fabrics to dry your hair. Even if you are not getting a keratin treatment done, you should still use a microfibre towel because they do not damage your hair.

When you use a regular towel, it will cause some friction with your hair and may even tug and pull your hair. But a microfibre towel absorbs water quickly without these disturbances.

After pat drying using the towel, keep it on your hair for three minutes to make sure that the excess water is out.

Use the right water temperature– We all love a hot shower at the end of the day. But if you have keratin-treated hair, you might want to rethink getting a hot shower.

Too much heat can literally remove the keratin coating from your hair so you should stay away from hot water.

But this doesn’t mean that you should take a cold shower. The best way to wash your hair after getting keratin treatment is by rinsing it in lukewarm water. A temperature around 38°C.

This will thoroughly clean your hair without irritating your scalp or disturbing the keratin coating.

Do not saturate your hair in water– It will be very tempting to spend a long time under the shower since you have waited days after the keratin treatment. But that’s not a good idea.

When you saturate your hair in the water, the cuticles might open up and lead to the breakage of the keratin protein. So you should get out as soon as possible after taking a shower.

Always use a suitable shampoo– You have to make sure that you use a sulfate-free shampoo to wash your keratin-treated hair. Take a dime-sized amount of shampoo on your hands and apply it to your scalp.

Just because the shampoo is sulfate-free doesn’t mean that you should apply it all over your hair.

It is important to focus the shampoo on your scalp rather than on your hair. Gently massage the product onto your scalp and rinse it off immediately.

Do not use a wet brush in the shower- If you are someone who detangles their hair in the shower, you have to stop doing it after you get a keratin treatment done.

Wait for at least two weeks until you start using a brush in the shower. A wet brush can cause friction and damage the keratin on your hair.

Don’t use a blow dryer- You should steer clear from any sort of heat tools for at least two weeks after getting the keratin treatment done. Stick to air drying or towel drying your hair after a shower unless you want your keratin coating melted.

Now that we have looked into the various steps in washing your hair correctly after a keratin treatment, it is important to stock up on the hair products to help you achieve it.

Below, I have listed some of the best hair products to help you wash and maintain your keratin-treated hair.

Dos And Don’ts After Keratin Treatment

There are a few things that you should always keep in mind after getting your hair treated with keratin:

  1. Always rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water after the treatment. This will help to remove any residual product, and it will also reduce the chances of skin irritation or other adverse effects.
  2. Avoid putting any pressure on your hair – This includes wearing tight hats, headbands, or other restrictive clothing. If you experience any discomfort or irritation, please contact your stylist immediately for further instructions.
  3. Be aware of the sun – Keratin treatment can make your hair more susceptible to damage from the sun, so always wear a sunscreen and avoid exposing your hair to excessive sunlight.
  4. Wait at least two weeks before dyeing your hair – This is to ensure that the keratin has had a chance to fully penetrate into the hair follicle. If you do decide to dye your hair during this time, please consult with a stylist first to ensure that the dye will not damage your hair follicles.

How To Tie Hair After Keratin Treatment

You shouldn’t tie your hair up for at least 3 days after your keratin treatment. If you do it can actually leave a kink in your hair where you’ve tried the scrunchie or hair tie, ruining the whole straightening process.

After 3 days, you can tie up your hair but you need to be more careful on how you do it.

Here are some tips on how to tie your hair after you’ve gotten a keratin treatment:

  • Keep your hair untied as much as possible
  • If you’re tying your hair use a silk or satin scrunchie instead of a elastic one as they don’t cause as much friction on your tresses
  • When you’re sleeping cover your hair with a bonnet or a silk scarf as it prevent hair from rubbing against one another and causing tangles
  • Do not wear tight hairstyles as your hair is already fragile due to the keratin treatment and tight hairstyles like very high ponytails, etc. can cause traction alopecia

This is one of my favorite shampoo and conditioner duos for keratin treated hair. If you want your keratin treatment to stay intact for a long time, I would definitely recommend these products.

My hair feels really light and silky. It is slightly on the pricier side but the results are definitely worth it.

So to sum it up, you should wait for at least 3 days or 72 hours to wash your hair after getting a keratin treatment.

This will make sure the keratin soaks into your hair completely and your hair isn’t malleable when you decide to shower.

Also use a special shampoo (preferably sulfate-free) to cleanse your keratin-treated hair as it requires extra care.
