You have to make sure that your hair is prepared for the shower. The first and the most important thing to look into are the products that you will be using while washing your hair. This includes shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and even hair creams. 

It is important to stock up on these products because you have to make sure that you are using keratin-friendly products on your hair. What exactly are keratin-friendly products?

Keratin-friendly products do not contain substances, namely sulfates and sodium chlorides, that wash off the keratin from your hair. So it is important to stock up on sulfate and sodium chloride-free products after getting a keratin treatment done. 

If you got your keratin treatment done from a salon, you will definitely find a suitable shampoo and conditioner for your hair. But you can also find these in stores or online. 

How to wash hair after keratin treatment?

While washing your hair, you have to put a little bit of effort and make some changes in your hair wash routine. Let us take a look at some of the most important things you should look into while washing your keratin-treated hair. 

Use a microfiber towel to dry hair– A microfibre towel is one of the best fabrics to dry your hair. Even if you are not getting a keratin treatment done, you should still use a microfibre towel because they do not damage your hair. 

When you use a regular towel, it will cause some friction with your hair and may even tug and pull your hair. But a microfibre towel absorbs water quickly without these disturbances.

After pat drying using the towel, keep it on your hair for three minutes to make sure that the excess water is out. 

Use the right water temperature– We all love a hot shower at the end of the day. But if you have keratin-treated hair, you might want to rethink getting a hot shower. 

Too much heat can literally remove the keratin coating from your hair so you should stay away from hot water. 

But this doesn’t mean that you should take a cold shower. The best way to wash your hair after getting keratin treatment is by rinsing it in lukewarm water. A temperature around 38°C. 

This will thoroughly clean your hair without irritating your scalp or disturbing the keratin coating. 

Do not saturate your hair in water– It will be very tempting to spend a long time under the shower since you have waited days after the keratin treatment. But that’s not a good idea. 

When you saturate your hair in the water, the cuticles might open up and lead to the breakage of the keratin protein. So you should get out as soon as possible after taking a shower. 

Always use a suitable shampoo– You have to make sure that you use a sulfate-free shampoo to wash your keratin-treated hair. Take a dime-sized amount of shampoo on your hands and apply it to your scalp. 

Just because the shampoo is sulfate-free doesn’t mean that you should apply it all over your hair.

There are a few things that you should always keep in mind after getting your hair treated with keratin:

1. Always rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water after the treatment. This will help to remove any residual product, and it will also reduce the chances of skin irritation or other adverse effects.
2. Avoid putting any pressure on your hair – This includes wearing tight hats, headbands, or other restrictive clothing. If you experience any discomfort or irritation, please contact your stylist immediately for further instructions.
3. Be aware of the sun – Keratin treatment can make your hair more susceptible to damage from the sun, so always wear a sunscreen and avoid exposing your hair to excessive sunlight.

After 3 days, you can tie up your hair but you need to be more careful on how you do it.

• Keep your hair untied as much as possible
• If you’re tying your hair use a silk or satin scrunchie instead of a elastic one as they don’t cause as much friction on your tresses
• When you’re sleeping cover your hair with a bonnet or a silk scarf as it prevent hair from rubbing against one another and causing tangles
• Do not wear tight hairstyles as your hair is already fragile due to the keratin treatment and tight hairstyles like very high ponytails, etc. can cause traction alopecia

This is one of my favorite shampoo and conditioner duos for keratin treated hair. If you want your keratin treatment to stay intact for a long time, I would definitely recommend these products. 

My hair feels really light and silky. It is slightly on the pricier side but the results are definitely worth it. 

So to sum it up, you should wait for at least 3 days or 72 hours to wash your hair after getting a keratin treatment.

This will make sure the keratin soaks into your hair completely and your hair isn’t malleable when you decide to shower.

Also use a special shampoo (preferably sulfate-free) to cleanse your keratin-treated hair as it requires extra care.
