Madison, the capital city of Wisconsin, lies west of Milwaukee. It’s known for the domed Wisconsin State Capitol, which sits on an isthmus between lakes Mendota and Monona. The Wisconsin Historical Museum documents the state’s immigrant and farming history. The city's paved Capital City State Trail runs past Monona Terrace, a lakefront convention center designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

2

Omaha

Omaha is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska, on the Missouri River close to the Iowa border. A stop on the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, it's known for its pioneer history, museums and cultural centers. The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium spearheads conservation work and features a big cat complex as well as indoor jungle, rainforest and desert habitats.

Slide 1 of 1

If you find yourself in Omaha, Nebraska, or anywhere in the vicinity of western Iowa, set aside some time to explore the 220-mile north-south Loess Hills National Scenic Byway (one of eleven designated byways in Iowa.) I only saw a little piece of it while in the area for a conference, but it was enough that I’d love to return and find out more. The main Byway road is called the “spine,” but all along that are “excursion loops” – paved and gravel – that can really get you deep into the heart of the region.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Over 415 square miles of protected mountain terrain with a huge network of hiking trails & wildlife.

Slide 1 of 8

Some tips for visiting Rocky Mountain National Park: -The park is already at a higher elevation than most people are used to, and trails up the mountains bring you even higher...so take a few precautions to avoid altitude sickness. It's suggested that you spend at least 24-48 hours acclimating to the altitude of the park before setting off on a hike, and to stay well rested and well hydrated. If you do experience altitude sickness (symptoms include dizziness, headaches, nausea, and fatigue), descend a few thousand feet as soon as possible.

A day in Rocky Mountain National Park was the main draw for us, and we also enjoyed Colorado’s Garden of the Gods. Honestly, though, all of the small towns, hiking, parks, and breweries in Colorado are amazing. There is so much around Denver to see and do and one of my favorite excursions from the city was our day trip to Boulder, Colorado.

Spend your morning experiencing Rocky Mountain National Park in all of its glory. If you’re a hiker, be sure to hike the Emerald Lake Trail to get a taste of everything that the park has to offer. From alpine lakes to snow topped peaks, you’ll be blown away at every turn.

There’s a nearly endless amount of trails within Rocky Mountain National Park to explore. For all Colorado Adventurers, check out beginner, moderate, and difficult hiking trails in the park. Rocky Mountain Iris.

This trail climbs along the edge of a wooded ridge and then up a sheltered gully, to a small lake which has good, unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains

This place has views for days! The park rangers are excellent with kids! My daughters became junior rangers by filling out their national park explorer books! They had so much fun! If you see people stopped on the side of the road, look and see if you can see what they see as most people stop for a reason! Will definitely be back!

This national park is absolutely stunning! There are so many different epic views throughout the park. If you get lucky you might see some cool animals. We saw many beautiful trees and lakes. I do recommend to find out about the opening hours before you drive up to the park so you won't have to wait in your car for a while. Also, bring food and water with you, they don't really have anywhere to buy anything once you enter. Go as early as you can. All in all, it was a great experience.

Visited Late June 2021. One of my top 3 favorite national parks. Alpine Meadows, Aspen Forests, Scenic Lakes. Elk, Bear and Squirrels are also a common sight. I loved this park, just make sure to come early to avoid the crowds.

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs, at an elevation of 6,035 ft., is a city in Colorado at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains. It lies near glacier-carved Pikes Peak, a landmark in Pike National Forest with hiking trails and a cog railway leading to its 14,114-ft. summit. The city's Garden of the Gods park features iconic red-sandstone formations and mountain views.

Slide 1 of 3

Passing through Colorado Springs, you’ll spot NORAD (a top secret military facility inside a mountain ) near Pikes Peak. Instead of the straight shot to NM, what better way to pass the miles than to see one of Colorado’s most treasured national parks?. The Great Sand Dunes, North America’s tallest sand dunes, are true wonders to behold. Rising north of 750 feet, with the Sangre de Cristo Range as the backdrop, these dunes are simply phenomenal, especially at dusk.

Partially, because the roads to Buena Vista, the Rio Grande National Forest pass and the Pikes Peak Highway towards Colorado Springs, are often closed due to unfavourable weather conditions, but partially because we didn’t actually have the time to complete the loop as it’s described in this post on our Colorado road trip. Boulder is a city at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, in northern Colorado. To the west, the trail-lined Flatirons are craggy rock formations overlooking the city. Downtown’s pedestrian Pearl Street Mall includes art galleries, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The University of Colorado Boulder campus is home to the Fiske Planetarium and the Museum of Natural History, with zoology and anthropology exhibits.

From Denver, take a day trip to Boulder and spend a day exploring Pearl Street Mall and its surroundings. It’s a great spot for unique shopping, with some good restaurants, and entertainment options.

6

Denver

Denver, the capital of Colorado, is an American metropolis dating to the Old West era. Larimer Square, the city’s oldest block, features landmark 19th-century buildings. Museums include the Denver Art Museum, an ultramodern complex known for its collection of indigenous works, and the mansion of famed Titanic survivor Molly Brown. Denver is also a jumping-off point for ski resorts in the nearby Rocky Mountains.

Slide 1 of 2

This Colorado trip begins in Denver and makes its way back, but you can start it from any of the other cities that are along the way. We flew into Colorado (from Houston to Denver) and rented a car at the airport. You may say that flying in is not the same as a road trip, but the drive from Houston to Denver is a 15-hour, nonstop drive that is more than 1,000 miles in distance. That is JUST TO GET TO THE STARTING POINT. That means a hotel stay in North Texas, a lot of fueling up, and—having driven Houston to Colorado multiple times—spending the majority of the driving hours in nothing-to-see parts of Texas, I can tell you the cheap flight and inexpensive rental car we got was sooo worth it.

This week-long road-trip itinerary from Denver covers only a small portion of what the state has to offer, but it offers just enough of a taste (especially from the green chile) that you'll want to return time and again in the future. Here's your guide to spending seven days in the Southwest's most enchanting state.

7

Moab

Moab is a city in eastern Utah. It’s a gateway to massive red rock formations in Arches National Park. Southwest, Canyonlands National Park features mesas and buttes carved by the Green and Colorado rivers, plus Native American rock art. Dinosaur tracks can be found at sites like Bull Canyon Overlook and Copper Ridge. In the city, collections at the Museum of Moab include dinosaur bones and archaeological artifacts.

Slide 1 of 2

The park is set up nicely so you can easily drive through it while continuing on to Moab. If you have ample time to explore, there are numerous backcountry hikes in Capitol Reef that lead you through gorges and slot canyons to incredible viewpoints. If you plan to camp, be sure to pick up a free backcountry camping permit at the visitors center.

Probably my all-time favorite area in Utah, Moab, is a gem that stands out from the rest of the state. I wrote an entire guide to Moab if you want a an extensive look into the area, but the main things that you need to know are: Arches National Park and Canyonlands.

Page

Page is a city in Coconino County, Arizona, United States, near the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 7,247.

Slide 1 of 2

Sleep: There aren’t amazing hotel options in the Page, Arizona area in my opinion unless you’re going super luxe and want to stay at the Amangiri (which is absolutely stunning, but in that case I wouldn’t leave the hotel!). If you want to stick around for the night, your best bet is to check Booking.com and just go for something basic and cheap. If you’re camping, the Lone Rock campground is a good option, but you have to be driving a car that can handle soft sand terrain (trust me, we learned this the hard way) to be able to access the parts of the beach close to the water’s edge.

Drive to Page, AZ. See either Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, or both. Continue driving onto Zion National Park (or if you’re like us, take a slight detour to call the insurance company of the man who backed into your car in a gas station parking lot, then continue onto Zion).

Bryce Canyon National Park

Geologic Formations

Park with overlooks & trails offering views of towering spires (hoodoos) & a natural amphitheater.

Slide 1 of 9

Zip over to Bryce Canyon NP (here’s a great post about visiting Bryce Canyon from a fellow blogger) if you like, or, for a stress-free departure, leave early and head back to SLC. It’s approximately four hours up I-15. If you have kids, you’ll have time to let them enjoy a couple hours playing in one of the child-friendly museums in the SLC area (see below). If you’re traveling sans small wallet-draining noise makers, consider a visit to the Natural History Museum on the U of U campus or the Modern Art Museum downtown.

Begin your exploration of Zion National Park by driving the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, which begins outside of the park at the intersection of Highway 9 and Interstate 15. You’re in luck because this drive through Zion is only open to private vehicles during the winter months. Plan to spend a few hours on this excursion while you enjoy the scenery and make stops along the 54-mile drive.

Bryce Canyon National Park, The Lodge at Bryce Canyon, Bryce Canyon City, Utah 84764. If you want to stay within the park to maximize your time enjoying it, this is your only hotel option!. The Lodge at Bryce Canyon is all about location, just a short walk away from the trail around the canyon rim and the famous sunrise point.

Carmel Tunnel and continue driving towards Bryce Canyon National Park which is 1.5 hours away. If you are able to drive to Bryce by sunset we recommend heading straight to Sunset Point.

Spend the morning doing another hike in Zion, then drive over to Bryce Canyon in the afternoon. Enjoy a half-day at Bryce Canyon, sleep nearby.

My experience with this place was very positive. Such breathtaking views from mile 1 to all the way to the top of Rainbow Point. It isn't that long of a drive but there are spots to hike, camp, and go horseback riding. Overall, this park is beautiful!

Great park! If you only have time for one quick stop you must go to Bryce's point! I recommend you drive the entire road and stop at all the view points. They are all SO different! The Queens garden hike was very cool and not too long.

Absolutely gorgeous canyon with its colorful hoodoos. The Peek-a-boo Trail is amazing as well as the Navajo Trail. Great views are found at Bryce Point and Sunset Point. Rainbow Point also offers vast views. The Natural Bridge is beautiful with the canyon.

Canyons

Home to Zion Canyon, this vast national park offers trails, climbing, camping & more.

Slide 1 of 18

A bold desert beauty, this 230-sq-mile park is a highlight of southern Utah. Hikes range from trails traipsing the ridge lines to river wading under steep canyon walls. Many come for a canyoneering experience but there are also family friendly hikes and scenic drives. If possible, enter Zion from the east, following Hwy 9 west from Hwy 89. The route is jaw-droppingly scenic as it rolls through colorful red rocks and a gallery-dotted tunnel before switchbacking 3.5 miles into the canyon.

St. George, Utah which is the closest city in proximity to Zion National Park also has a small airport, but flight options may be more limited depending on where you’re coming in from. If you fly into Vegas, drive the two hours over the state line to St. George, Utah just note that there is a time change between Nevada and Utah!. If you have time, don’t miss a quick pit stop in Valley of Fire State Park which is a beautiful detour if you fly in early enough in the day.

Courtesy of Majestic View Lodge at Zion National Park / Expedia. Situated close to Zion Canyon, less than 3mi (5km) to the entrance of the park, this lodge lives up to the name, with some of the most astounding vistas of Zion’s pink mesas anywhere in the park. The outdoor pool (and hot tub) is ideally placed to take advantage of the views, and there’s a steakhouse and separate pub on the property, all within stumbling distance of your cozy, homespun-feeling rooms.

Only a mile away from the park border, the Quality Inn Springdale at Zion Park is ideally situated if you want to visit area attractions like Grafton Ghost Town and the Great White Throne. The straightforward rooms are clean and spacious, and they offer amenities like free Wi-Fi, coffee makers, and flat screen TVs. Families and groups of more than two people might want to consider renting out one of the suites, which come with microwaves and mini fridges.

The A- Frame in Zion National Park is a unique and eco friendly Zion Airbnb. This is the perfect getaway to relax, hike and enjoy nature. The stay is completely off the grid on the East side of Zion National Park and close to the East Rim Trailhead. The A – Frame runs off a solar system. There is also a solar system in place for the toilet.

Emerald PoolsThe Lower Emerald Pool Trail is an easy, family-friendly, 1.2-mile (round trip) paved path that leads to the gorgeous green waters of the Lower Emerald Pool and waterfalls. The entire hike takes about an hour. The Upper Emerald Pool Trail is slightly more challenging, as it climbs to the pool at the base of a cliff.

Quality Inn Springdale at Zion Park is a 3-star hotel that offers great value, with an excellent location just half a mile from the park entrance. From all the lower-budget Zion hotels, this one is the closest to the park entrance. If you don’t want to walk 15 minutes, you can also take a shuttle.

Beginning April 1, 2022, Zion will be implementing a lottery permit system to hike the Angels’ Landing Trail. There are two ways to obtain a permit for Angel’s Landing. There is a seasonal lottery that opens in January, April, July, and August for the forthcoming season.

Zion National Park is open everyday of the year, however some facilities and services may be closed during certain parts of the year. A free shuttle is in operation March through late November. The shuttle starts at the Visitors Center and goes to the end of the park.

It is difficult to describe the natural beauty of Zion National Park in words or pictures. There are so many scenic points all over the park. Some of my favourites were Lower Emerald and Higher Emerald pool. There is almost a couple of hours of hike from the base camp. It is a big park to cover in one day but you can take the bus from the base camp to quickly visit most important scenic points around the park. I visited the park in June, it was around 80F. There was lots of water in the river passing through the park. You should enjoy the beautiful sounds of the running water :) I planned my trip by staying the night in St. George, UT which is one hour drive from the park. I left the hotel at 7:00 AM and reached the park around 8:00 AM via UT-9. It is good not to drive in the evening or night because you can cover scenic UT-9 in the morning. My next destination was Grand Canyon National Park, so I left the park around 3:00 PM so that I could reach Flagstaff, AZ before the night. Doing this, I covered UT-9 all during the day time. UT-9 is a very beautiful scenic drive which you should not miss. Do have the following with you, - Sun block - Sun glasses - Stick for hiking - Lots of water

We visited in 1st week of may,It was busy but beauty amazed us. Had to say this park is magnificent in all the terms. Mountains look spectacular during sun set time. -We did Narrows,it wasn’t too deep but, at few places water is higher than your waist. It was bit cloudy that day. -We did the Angels landing, after about 2-2.5miles the trail is only accessible by the chain which is very narrow and slippery and also you need special permission to access that. -Emerald pools trail (upper, lower, middle) are the great start for the day. They are quick simple and amazing. -Lastly Watchman Campground,we did camping under millions of stars and Surrounded by beautiful mountains. Cold breeze and camp fire such an amazing experience. It is so hard to capture all the beauty.

We came late January, it was not too busy and absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed stunning drives with our little ones and a couple easier hikes. The drive repeats Bryce Canyon through the tunnel was incredible and definitely something that should be on everyone's list. Absolutely gorgeous park and such a wonderful time to visit for full access.

Woodfield Mall

Expansive mall offering brand-name stores, restaurants, a bowling alley & game lounge & comedy club.

Slide 1 of 3

I simply wanted y’all to know my incredible experience at this particular store. I wanted to shop clothes for kids and I went to the perfect store. This store is super clean and everything is perfectly organized. Many people were there who are also busy shopping but the store is not crowded. Staff are accommodating and helpful. I’ve got to choose from their wonderful selection of shoes and clothes. They got pretty designs and good quality selection of clothes. Shoes and clothes are branded and the prices are fair and reasonable. It was a great deal and the kids love what I got for them. I highly suggested this Kids Foot Locker store if you wanted amazing shoes, clothes and other stuffs for kids!

We decided to come here since I have no works to do. My wife told me that we go to this mall early to spend our whole day here. It’s been a long time since we go to the mall. Since we already eat our breakfast before coming here we decided to go to every stores and looks for some products and things to buy. There are some people in the mall so it’s easy to walk and the flooring was very clean. Some of the stores that we enter has a nice and good service and some are not. The pricing was depending on the brand and the quality of the shirts. The good things are there’s a sale and a discount but in a limited product only. Although the dress and the polo shirt that we bought was little expensive but its worth the price. After the tiring shopping we ate and bought some groceries. So this is our experience in this mall.

Woodfield Mall is just plain amazing, it is a good spot for xmas shopping. You will find everything here. Before Covid they had this awesome new food court that had opened. I was so sad because I wanted to try a few spots. Anyways I am hoping to re-visit and hopefully they are still open. Update it is open and back up and everything is still amazing.

The Morton Arboretum

Diverse 1,700-acre nature preserve with a maze garden & tram plus picnicking, hiking & biking.

Slide 1 of 3

We went to see lights at night at the arboretum. What a great walk through lighted trails!! Synchronization music and lighting was beautiful and worth it to watch and listen. Very nice one mile walk, enjoyable view with campfires set up to warm up, and hot drinks stops for those that need warm up from inside 😀. Warm restrooms were also available. Overall perfect evening, glad we were able to make it before the end of the season. Tickets were selling out on line very quickly. So if you are planning next year to visit you better grab tickets before they sold them out!!!

This is a huge and beautiful park that I've visited a couple of times and each time has been a little bit different because of the rotating exhibits and gardens. The walkways are wide and the trees are not densely packed so you will have large open areas with no shade. The west side of the park is much more prone to mosquitoes so prepare yourself if you venture on that side. The art exhibits that are incorporated within the park are absolutely beautiful, and the park is large enough you wouldn't be able to get to everything in a full day there. My only complaint is that the park lacks enough signage so while there are many things to explore, you will get lost trying to find them and/or frequently encounter other lost guests who ask you for directions.

Fell in love with this place. If you live in the city it's quite a journey getting there but it's worth it. Tranquil trails, great restaurant and cafe, and the plants are beautiful. My favorite part was the beautiful sculptures and red winged blackbirds. I would recommend bringing water and bug spray, the ticks were out.

Harrah's Joliet

Hotel

Casinos & Gambling

Casinos

Relaxed riverfront casino hotel with multiple dining options, plus a bar & live music.

Slide 1 of 3

The staff was very friendly and attentive, from the casino floor to security to the hotel staff. We got a non-smoking King room and the room was spotless...very clean! The bathroom had a hairdryer that worked!!! The tub was massive... definitely room for 2! Private toilet room, soap/body wash provided, and plenty of towels. The casino gave some, took some away, and then let us walk away with some. New and (best of all) old school slots, a nice variety of dollar, quarter, and penny slots. The tables were open, and there was room to sit at anyone you wanted to. There is a little cafe serving good sandwiches and Starbucks. 2 bar areas w/staff pouring cold beer and stiff drinks. This was our 2nd stay here and we'll be back!

I stayed here primarily because it's the closest hotel to the train station. The tub was deep enough that I could soak (I'm 5'10"). I had great nights rest. I wasn't too happy about some of the extra fees they add to your room (~$20+). So add $20 to whatever price you see advertised. I'm not a gambler so I didn't enter the casino.

Gambling is what it is...a risk you take; but at least LIVEN this place up!!! Compared to Rivers this place feels like work, not as bad as Hollywood but very close. Pump some good music through the place, get the crowd jumping, have more fiery give aways, be more creative! Joliet should be a place people from Chicago and Indiana should want to take a drive to; a fun hot spot! More winning not a repast.

Tristan Crist Magic Theatre

Small theater hosting family-friendly magic & illusion shows, with a gift shop & lobby.

Slide 1 of 3

Excellent show. Tristan brought several people on to the stage and performed the illusions with their assistance and was available for pictures after with anyone. There are no bad seats but only about 120 seats available. Price was reasonable. My family and I enjoyed it a lot and I am sure you will as well.

Theater was clean and every seat had a great view! Tristan's illusions were fantastic and his great interaction was so fun!

I saw the Tristan Crist show this past weekend. This is the second time I have seen the show as I was in the area a year ago. The show is as good the second time as the first time. He has put in a number of new illusions so the show was fresh and as enjoyable. So if you have seen the show one time I definitely would recommend seeing it a second time. Tristan is crisp and engaging with his presentations, everyone is treated with respect. His performance skills are very well done. His assistant Shannon is stunning and is an amazing foil for Tristan. The theater is modern and comfortable. The staff is highly professional. I highly recommend.

Tranquil, 12-acre landscape garden in traditional Japanese style, with an airy, farm-to-table cafe.

Slide 1 of 3

What an amazing space inside of Rockford! Meticulously maintained gardens that are lush and full of calming water features. Really great way to spend a few hours.

Beautiful little gardens feels very authentic. There. There are lots of little spots off the path where you can sit and just enjoy the serene beauty. Highlights include the little buildings themselves that are very oriental and make and seem quite authentic. Unfortunately these gardens are quite small and for $11 entry it almost is a little too expensive. It's more like a $5 entertainment for maybe an hour maybe an hour maybe an hour maybe an hour Max

Garden was beautiful. It is not the biggest garden out there, but definitely worth the visit. The gift shop has a nice variety of items. The walking trail is great, and having certain parts handicap accessible is a plus. Make sure you buy some fish food to feed the fish and ducks, it's a fun experience to have.

Starved Rock State Park

State park

Nature & Parks

Hiking Trails

Hiking, fishing & boating in a historic landmark area with canyons & trails plus a lodge & cabins.

Slide 1 of 3

Starved Rock State Park is an excellent place to hike. The actual starved rock is a very cool place to look around and it is not a very hard or long path. There are plenty of good hiking paths that go throughout the cliffs and rivers. The restaurant and conference center are a good place to rest and have great views. The restaurant’s food is not exceptional but it is pretty good. The nachos are very good. Starved Rock State Park is a unique state park and one of my favorites.

Wonderful place, we have been seeing signs for this place for years and finally got to come and see it. The ice was just melting and it was a little muddy but man what a great place. Good walk ways great views of waterfalls and a historic place. This place has it all. Even the girl in gift shop was helpful.

Nice big park. Trails for hiking an a big waterfront for fishing or watching the boats. There was a picnic area an boat dock just down from the visitor center area. Port a John's there for when the center isn't open. We did the st Louis canyon trail.. beautiful spot. We saw cliff swallows flying around the top of the canyon. That was neat!!

Standing over 200 feet tall, the Capitol is an architectural masterpiece, made of 43 varieties of stone from around the world, hand-carved furniture and exquisite glass mosaics, and topped by Daniel Chester French's elegant gilded bronze statue, “Wisconsin.” Visitors can experience the beauty of the Capitol on a guided tour, which explores the entire building. See the Italian-styled Governor's conference room, which is adorned with 26 historical and allegorical paintings by Hugo Ballin and French walnut furniture and head into the Senate and Assembly Chambers, which feature New York and Italian marble, and a magnificent Edwin Blashfield mural.

Dominating both the center of the city and its skyline, the Wisconsin State Capitol is undoubtedly the most important and impressive building in all of Madison. The seat of the state’s government, it exhibits some absolutely exquisite architecture with its distinctive dome towering to a colossal 279 feet in height. The third such capitol to stand in the same spot, the imposing yet elegant Beaux-Arts building was completed in 1917 and is modeled on the US Capitol in Washington, DC. While its fetching facade and Corinthian columns already make for a striking sight, the capitol’s marble and mahogany-clad interior is equally appealing with magnificent murals and mosaics.

This is one of the worlds most beautiful buildings, the Capitol dome is bested by Daniel Chester French’s exquisite overlaid bronze statue, “Wisconsin.” Edwin Blashfield’s wall painting “Assets of Wisconsin” extravagantly enriches the inside dome of the rotunda, which is the main rock dome in the United States. Inside, visitors are dealt with to the special surfaces of 43 assortments of stone from around the globe, hand-cut furniture and flawless glass mosaics. As Madison is the state capital of Wisconsin, you can’t visit here and not see the State Capitol building in the entirety of its glory.

Located in 2 East Main Street, the Wisconsin State Capitol is one of the many marvelous landmarks that Madison is famous for. Its dome-shaped structure is an architectural wonder in itself, and lots of tourists make sure to have a picture with it while in the city. Home to the governing pillar of Wisconsin, including the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the office of the governor, Wisconsin State Capitol offers guided tours for scholars, academics, and interested parties through the Capitol Visitor Center.

The very center of isthmus, the State Capitol is often identified as one of the most beautiful state capitols in the country. The Capital is only three feet shorter than the national Capital and sits in the center of Capital Square, which features well-groomed public lawns and gardens. Tours are available on most weekdays allowing visitors to scale the stairs to the top of the rotunda where breathtaking views of Madison can be experienced.

Standing majestically just a few blocks from the lakeshore in Madison's downtown (and not swamped by soaring skyscrapers thanks to forward-thinking city planners) is the Wisconsin State Capitol Building. Finished in 1917, the building is adorned with a 284-foot-high dome that's just three feet shy of Washington's Capitol building. Two large wings adorn either side of the building.

While you are inside the Capitol building be sure to lay down in the Rotunda and look up to the beautiful mural painted on the inner dome. There are a few places that aren’t available for the self guided tours but there are still a lot of things to see. Not to mention all the stairs for the kids to burn off some energy.

This is one of the best breweries we have ever visited. The buildings are so beautiful with the Swiss theme. The outside tasting area is so relaxing, & beautiful! You good stay there all day and enjoy the great tasting beer while relaxing & enjoying nature. Clean & beautiful. Looking forward when they can be fully open on the weekends for more people to enjoy. The gift shop has something for everyone. Love the home of the Spotted cow! Thank you to all the staff who make it a great place to visit.

One of my favorite breweries of all time. I’ve been drinking their beer for 2 decades. We finally made a trip to visit the brewery and were not disappointed. The tour and tastings were great. I wish I could have bought more souvenirs to bring home. We had a great visit and will come back any time we return to the area.

So glad we FINALLY made it down to New Glarus to see the brewery and have some fresh and tasty brews! So cool to be able to walk the grounds at our own pace. We did not do the guided tour but I'm sure it would be amazing! Had some snow falling when we were there which made for awesome pictures of the exterior of the building as well! Highly highly recommend! Note: brewery only open during the weekday

This is truly a once and a life time experience. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s weird, yes, but it’s unique and interesting. It’s a lot of walking, but I made it through with not many problems. As someone who has a hard time walking due to health problems it wasn’t too bad until the end. I was very tired as I went through the last few rooms but it was so worth it. My favorite exhibits were the heritage of the sea, the carousel, the tribute to nostalgia, and the music of yesterday. We also met some cool and nice people during our time there :) If you are staying in the area overnight I recommend the House on the Rock Resort. It’s beautiful, nice rooms, and a cute little gift shop. We stayed 2 nights and visited some cool shops and enjoyed the nature and scenery. This was an amazing experience.

A must see. So many amazing robitcs. Huge displays. A full house within a rock. This place is amazing best kept secret. Museum of unique items and displays. Could spend hours in this place. Small cafeteria in the middle with great pizza.

This place is so amazing! I went when I was a kid and finally got to bring my kids. It's a lit of walking but you can have food and drinks on the premises. And there are lots of benches and rest stops. It is a must see place!

Fantastic place. We went about 2 hours before close. Not a lot of people in there but enough to have fun. We sat at the bar and were promptly greeted by Lexy. We perused the menu and I ordered a smoked old fashioned. My wife didn’t know what to have and Lexy suggested a cocktail that she liked. Both drinks were amazing. It was definitely the best old fashioned I’ve ever had. I then wanted to try their gin, and Lexy suggested 50 shades of your mom. Lexy wins again. Smelled EXACTLY like a lemon shake-up. Tasted so good I limited myself to one because I think I could have tried to drink 30 of them. The .5 oz flights of spirits are great for sampling without committing to one you may not like (but they’re all great so that won’t happen) We had an awesome time chatting at the bar with Lexy and I absolutely would come back here again!

Fantastic cocktails and a tour to boot! The tour guide is incredibly knowledgeable about spirits, and history of spirits which added a nice touch to our experience. Samples at the end! We enjoyed a couple rounds from the cocktail menu, and nothing disappointed. Highly recommend just about everything in the menu. One in our party stated it was the "best damn chocolate martini she's ever had ". Ya'll, the bourbon and the hellfire vodka are worth the visit!

This is my second time at Blaum Bros. The staff is always friendly and there is just a good vibe there. They added a lot of new games and decor. Wish I lived closer because this would be my go-to place!

It really helps to understand more about Grant as a person. One gets the impression that he was a homebody. The house is very well kept. The guide was well informed and answered all the questions.

It's so rare that a historic home still has the original furnishings, but that's what you find in the Grant Home. Yes, the General sat in those chairs. Yes, the family gathered at that table. It makes history so real. Our very knowledgeable tour guide, Katherine, displayed a real passion for the home, the Grant family, and their history. I highly recommend this stop on your next visit to Galena.

Beautifully preserved and well maintained with an informative staff. Tours are at top and bottom of the hour (from my memory) so be sure to get in line at the front porch on time. :)

It’s cool when you pull up and recognize the store and the old car out front. It’s pretty cool in both stores recognizing the picks from various episodes. This store is more recognizable than the Nashville store and it’s a good way to spend an hour or so. Lots of souvenirs to purchase. I was kind of hoping Mike would be there. But again we missed him. Nobody was at the Nashville store either about a year ago. Still if you’re a fan of American Pickers this is a cool stop if you’re in the area. Also, LeClaire is beautiful too!!!

Such an incredible experience seeing my grown sons having a catch with their dad on this field. Iowa was truly heaven that day. Beautifully maintained. Kind workers. Truly wonderful. Sadly too early for corn.

It was a very nice day but windy when I visited. It is nicely maintained and full of history. The admission is free, but I suggest at least $5 donation per person. After all, it requires basic maintenance. There is a gift shop on-site, and you can rent the baseball equipment I'd you don't have yours. It also has a concession stand for quick lunch and snacks. Everything is like what you see in the movie. You can call walk in the field like those players walked out of corn field. The whole place is just very pleasant to visit. If you close your eyes, you can feel the pleasant breeze and smell the corn field. If your heart is quiet enough, you will also feel that spiritual connection just like Kevin Costner heard in the movie "If you build it, they will come". Although it feels like heaven, it definitely is Iowa. I never thought that Iowa's has so much to offer.

It's hard to describe being here but it's like a little piece of heaven! For sure a destination stop, as it's not close to anything but well worth the drive. $20 to tour the house, which is a guided tour and Greg was great! You can spend as much time as you want to there in the field and stands and there is a gift shop, snack shop and porta potties. The house can also be rented out for stays. Every August, Des Moines welcomes over a million visitors to the city, who come to enjoy the exciting shows, rides and competitions of the Iowa State Fair. Since 1886, it has been held on the east side of town with the annual event now being one of the oldest, largest and most renowned agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. While the fun-filled fair celebrates the Midwestern state’s rich agricultural heritage through thrilling contests, parades and carnival rides, the Iowa State Fairgrounds also host other events during the year.

Every August, the Iowa State Fairgrounds are home to hundreds of different vendors and attractions. It’s a great way to experience Iowa and all the things that make this place special. You can see the Butter Cow which is an entire cow sculpted out of butter.

Another fun thing to do in Iowa is to visit the Iowa State Fair. It is a beautiful location in Des Moines that requires no description due to its popularity. Be sure to plan your trip wisely because the fair only comes to town once per year.

One of the pretty destinations in Des Moines, the Iowa State Fairgrounds features a wonderful two-week carnival in August every year with great pomp and show.

Known as the place where the infamous Iowa State Fair occurs annually, the Iowa State Fairgrounds is a 450-acre space holding the said event since 1886.

I made a point of going by myself so I wasn't slowed down by anyone else. There's so much to see and hear and taste. I had a blast. Got to pet horses, ride in tractors, eat root beer floats, buy t-shirts. I love the fair. I can't wait for next year. It's the best!

Best event in Iowa! We go every year! Baby animals are our favorite part of every visit! During our visit, the Iowa State parade showed up and surprised us with an amazing show! In the kids forest we watched a talent show that was hilarious! We couldn't find the giant slide but overall the experience was more than worth it!

So thankful to have the fair back this year! I happily go every year. No matter the weather, it's an awesome event. I take my time and see everything. Go through every building and barn. Ride some rides. Try some different foods. Get my face painted. Listen to live music. Learn something during a show. Watch a parade. Buy a trinket or do a personality test. Play games in the midway. Watch a talent show. Taste some wine or beer. Look at farm machinery. Hold a snake. Sometimes enjoy a concert or 2. Ride a tractor trolly. Collect some freebies at various vendors. Do a portrait. Watch a cooking demonstration. It's amazing to see families and groups of every religion, size, age, shape, and color all having a good time at a common event. Makes my heart full. Here's to another 100 years of State Fair!

Had a ton of fun!! Definitely a great atmosphere, clean as well! Security was very friendly and fun. Didn't win a dime but it was still very fun!

I was in the area, and thought I would stop in for a few hands of blackjack. All of their tables (except one, that was full) paid 6 to 5 on blackjack instead of the centuries old standard of 3 to 2. This makes playing blackjack worse odds than some slot machines. Anytime you see 6 to 5 blackjack, you should refuse to play, and leave a one star review of the casino. Perhaps they will start offering traditional odds on BJ again if everyone did this.

It was fun . Went late so there wasn't many people. Free pop and coffee. Garage to park in . Clean bathrooms. Lots of slot machines & and card and dice tables. I limed it better when u cashed out and got money instead of a ticket.

The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is frequently ranked as the top one or two zoos in the United States and the world.

The zoo is one of our favorite places to go as a family. We always get a yearly membership since we frequent the park so much. What we do is we break our visits down into sections. Since the park is so huge it’s really difficult to cover the whole park and enjoy it at the same time if we do it all at once. This way we do a section we enjoy it we take our time and we have fun. The new sea lions exhibit is definitely our favorite. You completely feel engulfed in the experience and the escape once you enter the exhibit. My son loves to play with the sea lions through the looking glass window observation area. For me this is one of the best exhibits I’ve ever seen at any zoo. We always love to ride the train and the chairlift when they’re open. As a tip bring your own water bottle as things can be quite expensive and they can add it real fast otherwise. Overall, we enjoyed going to the zoo and watching our son engulf himself and all the exhibits.

The most incredible zoo meant for all ages. Free parking. $25 entrance fee for adults, kids two and under free. Beautiful and well kept. We went on a Saturday during peak hours and saw the Apes, Aquarium, the Jungle, creatures of the night. There is so much to enjoy here. Little nooks to get up close. Plenty of spots to sit down as you’re walking around.

For the price and the hype for "world top ranked zoo", I expected better. Water bowls in many enclosures were very murky, the size of enclosures seemed too small in certain areas (especially in the Desert Dome) and many of the animals looked way too depressed (especially the gorillas and tigers). The Desert Dome was the most disappointing. For such a large dome, the animals were in small enclosures wrapped with netting, and the interior design of the landscape in the dome was just underutilizing the size of the dome, which makes me wonder if the design of the dome just for flexing from the outside. I also definitely did not see 1000+ species of animals as advertised on websites, plus there were a lot of the same animals in different zones. Food options were also terrible for a top ranked zoo. I've visited many other zoos with less to no cost and still had better animal exhibits, much more species of animals, management, and food options (like the free St Louis Zoo, Smithsonian Zoo, Kansas City Zoo and Seattle's Woodland Zoo). Makes me wonder where the $25 per person money goes too.... Despite that, putting the status and price aside, I was still able to have a wonderful time at the zoo. The close experiences with the giraffe and elephant families were an unforgettable experience. Kinda bumped that the Forest Trial was closed during my visit, but the Lied Forest was my favorite exhibit, with an amazing replica of a tropical environment. The zoo can be fully explored within a day if you don't have kids with you and if you fully spend the opening hours in the zoo. I also recommend bringing your own food for lunch.

We checked this place out on our road trip. The day before we’d stopped by the Iowa State Capital, our first time in one, and we were interested to see they differed. This building was interesting because it had a castle like feel to it, and we got to sit and watch a senate hearing as it was happening. Very cool

Impressive architecture and artwork, mosaics, murals and tile work. Very interesting historically and culturally! Take the elevator to the top flor and you'll see an impressive view of the city and the Capitol's surrounding area.

Great Platte River Road Archway Monument

Historical place

Sights & Landmarks

Unique architectural landmark above I-80 containing a museum on 19th-century Western migration.

Slide 1 of 4

Arching unexpectedly over I-80 east of Kearney, the multimedia light-and-sound exhibits here tell colorful tales about the people who've passed this way, from those riding wagon trains to those zipping down the interstate. Everything from the figures narrating the tales to the murals on the walls has been hand-painted, and the attention to detail is striking.

Fun interactive and hands on history information that kept your attention the entire time! Give yourself plenty of time to really take in all the memorabilia and listen to all the stories and facts at the Wonderful, Gem of a museum! Family of 4 cost $31 My boys are almost 9, and almost 3. A must visit!!

OMGosh, where to begin. Number one, YES, take the time, make the stop, go through the museum, hike the trails. The museum is brilliant, built over the highway, it was built in the air, taking up no precious space on the ground. The story of the westward expansion that passed through and around the area was vast and sweeping. The murals are some of the most exquisitely painted murals I’ve ever seen. The artists that painted the murals are of the highest caliber. Jaw dropping.

What a great experience to walk through and listen to Nebraska history from the Indians and Pioneers to the building and expansion of the railroad to the highway system all based around the lives of people. Worth the price of admission. Definitely will be a great memory.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary

Wildlife refuge

Zoos & Aquariums

Rehabilitation & rescue center for animals such as lions, tigers, bears & wolves, open to visitors.

Slide 1 of 3

We had an amazing visit to the sanctuary. We arrived with absolutely no expectations to see any of the rescue animals that they have but we're blown away to have been graced with the presence of many. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and it's a good way to get some exercise in on your hike. What a blessing we will be going back!

Beautiful animals that we well cared for! Two MUSTS: 1. binoculars, 2. patience. This isn't a zoo where you are face to face with the animals behind glass. You have a birds eye view of them in very large natural habitats. Some of the tigers are in smaller enclosures for medical care or because they are newly rescued. You do get a pretty up close view of them. Staff and volunteers were all friendly and knowledgeable. Drove up from the Springs and it was worth the trip on a sunny, cool spring day.

We took our kids there and had a great time! I was unsure what to expect but it was incredible. My 17 year old and 11 year old both had a super fun time! We easily saw MANY beautiful and fun exotic animals from the safety of the walkway and yet the animals were roaming freely and safely in habitats that allow them significantly healthier and freer than what I’ve seen at zoos. Rescued tigers, foxes, bobcats, lions, bears, ostriches, emus, wolves, lynxes, and more. It’s a drive to get there but worth it! Plan to do a lot of walking. But the time flew by and before we knew it we had easily spent over two hours enjoying the park. We had good luck with the weather. Might be less enjoyable on really hot or really cold days because you’re outside, exposed to the elements most of the time. They said mornings are the best because the animals are usually more active. That definitely seemed the case for us. By the time we left around lunch, many of the animals were napping in the sun. It’s not inexpensive ($50/adult) but seems like a great cause and was worth it for us to see so many awesome animals rescued and taken care of.

A friend suggested this place since we have younger children (8 and 5). They absolutely loved it and didn’t want to leave! It’s a three story museum with multiple exhibits. My kids loved the space one exhibit and the ancient history (dinosaur) the most. We went to the second floor to the discovery zone where the kids got to do all sorts of hands on activities. It is definitely an experience for children and adults! I would definitely recommend it.

This is a pretty nice museum. There is a ton of taxidermy though which takes up a lot of real estate, and I'd rather see other things. The dinosaur area is pretty neat, and their temporary guitar exhibit was cool! I'd say this museum is worth a visit.

We take our toddlers a few times a month, and they love running around the different exhibits. The Discover Zone is usually our final stop (they usually get wet w the water table), but the Space area is top notch. The planetarium is a nice treat. Very thoughtfully curated Museum to stimulate learning.

The Denver Zoo is one of the best zoos I've been to. I would give it third place - behind only San Diego & the National Zoo. It's a very big zoo for being right in the city, with easy access from downtown and 25. Admission is incredibly reasonable and is a better deal than the aquarium. The enclosures are great and the animals seem very well cared for. We did a "behind the scenes" with birds of pretty and it was excellent! Tons of great information the keepers were amazing and clearly loved the animals they work with. 100% recommend it!

The zoo was really nice! I went on a day when the weather wasn't that great (which is my fault) so a lot of the animals were kind of hiding and what not. They have a good selection of animals which for the most part look super content. They have some parts under construction and the birds were all taken if for their own safety, so O feel like I didn't get the full experience, but I would love to go back and a day where everything is normal and it's nice out.

This was my first visit to the zoo other than Zoo Lights. It was easy to move around and it looks like they have some great improvements coming. We had an entry time in the morning so a lot of the animals were just lying around but as the day went on, they were more active. The hospital was so impressive. The prices were reasonable. My only complaint was we wanted to just get some drinks with ice but had to wait in the long line. It would be nice if they had a beverage line only since there was a place with a cash register and beverage machine that were not being used. Otherwise, everything was amazing.

While some buildings aren’t open to tourists, there are plenty of others that you can tour to learn more about the institution and the history of flight in general. This institute trains prospective pilots for the national air force, hence consider yourself lucky if you get to see their training sessions or some of the spectacular fighter planes on the spot. Enter through the north gate and roam around the vast place witnessing the famous Falcon Stadium and Honor Court.

If you're looking for things to do just north of Colorado Springs, head over to the United States Air Force Academy. This military staple is open daily to tourists. The Barry Goldwater Air Force Academy Visitor Center serves as the gateway to the United States Air Force Academy for hundreds of thousands of tourists

The academy, which set up camp in 1954, is one of the most popular attractions in Colorado. Highlights include the futuristic design,…

If the Academy is open for tours, it’s an impressive place for kids to see and learn about the university.

What an impressive place! Not just the beauty and the organization of it, but the respect for the academy and the respect for the service is present. The size of the grounds is immense, and we only stayed on the roads, not having time to go on any of the walking paths. Even though the chapel is currently closed, we still learned a lot through the visitor's center, and the video they showed was informative as well. Would have loved to have had more time here.

Beautiful place and inspiring. The cadet chapel is very nice. It’s a MUST visit place if you are in Colorado Springs area. Highly recommend it!

The price is right. It's a top-level education at zero cost. There are, of course, some strings attached.

I have to admit I wasn’t all that excited to visit Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. I figured this zoo would be the same as any other zoo.

This zoo is so good! If you're local I would definitely recommend a membership as it's a much better deal. We come every couple weeks and the kids are never bored. It's a bit of a hike in places so wear comfy shoes and I always bring my stroller for the younger kids and to pile our stuff on. Feeding the giraffes is always a highlight. Parking is free and they have a few options for eating but we always pack a lunch. Will definitely be returning often!

COZY AND UNIQUE LITTLE ZOO! LOVE GIRAFFES? MUST SEE! The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a little out of the way but well worth it. I've been to tons of zoos but this one was unique in its location and a far more relaxing experience than some of the larger zoos in the states. If you love Giraffes, this is a must stop. There are eateries on site with amazing views from decks and a one-of-a-kind view from the gandola lift up and down the mountain.

The thing that sets the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo apart from other zoos is the number of ways you can get up close and interact with the animals. Most animals have feeding experiences (giraffes, tigers, elephants, goats, chickens, birds) that are reasonably priced compared to similar experiences at other zoos. There are also multiple ways to interact with the environment as you make your way around (two interactive plays areas, beavers dens, caves, large sculptures to climb). It felt like equal parts modern art gallery and zoo in places and made for a great immersive experience. Many of the animals were active while we were there and staff went out of their way to interact with guests and answer questions about the animals. The only underwhelming exhibit, IMO, was the reptile and bird house. It had more of a pet store vibe looking at the snakes. For how well designed the rest of the exhibits are, I felt like they could do more in there. If you want to buy food they offer a decent selection of standard zoo food (burgers, pizza, hot dogs, ice cream), although prepare to pay zoo prices. I appreciated that they sold specialty coffee drinks at the Cozy Goat that were decent. We went at lunch time, and while it was hectic and busy, the line moved quickly. Be prepared to walk! Lots of incline walking because the zoo is in the side of the mountain. I loved the unique views this provided and the extra exercise, but for those not able to walk far, they offer a shuttle around for $3/day. The ski lift wasn't operating when we went, but looks fun! There's also a carousel to ride for a fee.

Pikes Peak

Outdoor Activities

14,115-ft. pink granite peak featuring hiking trails with stunning views, climbing & campgrounds.

Slide 1 of 8

According to the Colorado Springs Visitor Center, "The Jicarilla Apaches, who lived in the Pikes Peak region around 1000 AD, passed on legends of a cave where the Great Spirit of the Wind resided", this cave is speculated to be the very same cave!. This particular cave has had guided tours since 1881. Take the Discovery Tour (a 45-minute tour) or the Lantern Tour (a 90-minute tour). Tours leave every 15-30 minutes (depending on the tour) and since they close at 9pm, the last tour leaves at 8:30pm.

Pikes Peak (14,110ft) may not be the tallest of Colorado's 54 14ers, but it's certainly the most famous. The Ute originally called it the Mountain of the Sun, an apt description for this majestic peak, which crowns the southern Front Range. Rising 7400ft straight up from the plains, over half a million visitors climb it every year.

Explore Pike’s Peak, be it by driving up, hiking up, or taking a Cog Train to view the beautiful vistas from above. Visit Garden of the Gods, home to crazy red sandstone rock formations that are as much as 300 million years old, or spend the day at the North Cheyenne Canon Park, known for its diverse plant and animal life.

If you want to see the view from the top of Pikes Peak, which Katharine Bates described in "America the Beautiful," head up this 14,115-foot…

Day 3: Visit Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak, then Drive to Estes Park Start Early in Garden of the Gods

Hiked up through Barr trail and drove back from the top. Thanks to my friend who came up in his car to pick us up. Hard and enjoyable hike with beautiful views along the way. Views from the top were stunning! Would love to travel in the train next time. Our drive down was really fantastic with lot of great stops to enjoy the nature and views!

I’m terrified of heights and I had to drive along those narrow roads with those steep drop offs but I’d do it again to see that view. It really makes you appreciate nature and just how vast the Rocky Mountains are. My photos couldn’t do it justice but just go and see it. If you’re considering it just go do it. Also try the Pikes Peak doughnuts at the cafeteria and check out the gift shop!

Wow!! Is the best way to describe this experience. The drive up takes about an hour and it is best to go slow and steady especially around the turns. The view driving up is beautiful but once you get to the top, WOW it is just amazing. It was cold when we went but the experience is so worth it, just dress appropriately. Also don't forget to stop along the way up because there are some really beautiful places to see and take photos. 😊

Aspen Mountain Ski Resort

Well-known alpine recreation area with 64 mi. of ski trails, upscale hotels & scenic dining.

Slide 1 of 5

Famous for its black-diamond runs, skiing history, and the host of the World Cup races, Aspen Mountain is a legend in the skiing community. Advanced and expert skiers and riders love the mountain’s big bumps, steep grade, and out-of-this-world glades. With no green runs, Aspen Mountain is geared more towards intermediate to expert skiers and riders.

Aspen’s four mountains have something for everyone, but not all mountains are created equal. Take Aspen Mountain, or Ajax as the locals are apt to call it. It’s the crown jewel of our little town and it’s hard to miss.

I'm from Kentucky. Not as much fried chicken as I would expect... But I came here to ski. The app is great. The employees are very helpful. The resort is currently respectfully of covid protocols. Much appreciated. Great lifts and diverse terrain.

it's fun to ski Aspen on a day trip, or stay 45 min away in Glenwood Springs. Doable even if you aren't a millionaire. The scenery is amazing, and not just the nature, pay attention and you might see a Kardashian. The fashion in town is something you don't see every day... Lots of fur and high fashion outfits just walking down the street. My last trip was 2022, and before that 30+ years ago when I was a kid, it's still a bizarre place, $2000 a night hotel rooms, 20+ million dollar homes. The biggest changes from 30 years ago is the traffic in town is worse, but the road to Aspen is safer and much improved. Parking can be a struggle, but we splurged and parked for 4 hours $22 bucks but right at the base of the gondola. The skiing is great and the Gondola gives you like 3500 feet of vertical in 13 min. Good hard expert Aspen glades. And I must say the instructors I saw seemed to be some of the most technically good instructors I've seen in the United States. Surprisingly, food at the mid mountain lodge we visited was less expensive than other big resorts. There are 3 other mountains in town, but we only skied Aspen, next time I'll try Highlands.

Aspen Mountain is my absolute favorite place to ski. I've skied at most of the premier resorts in the United States and Aspen offers the best overall experience. The snow, the skill variety of the runs, the exceptional quality of the facilities and equipment, the personality of the locals, the charm of the City, the choices and quality of the restaurants, and the class of the shopping taken together is unrivaled. One of the coolest things about Aspen is the instant and spontaneous relationships that form when you're on the Mountain or around town. Aspen is a special place.
