  • China Population Welfare Fund to channel donations from Chinese companies, charities, and individuals towards COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO

The China Population Welfare Fund (CPWF) joins the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund in support of the work of the WHO and its partners to help countries respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CPWF participation in the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund was launched at the UN China headquarters in Beijing together with senior representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. The launch was also attended by the UN Resident Coordinator in China, Nicholas Rosellini and WHO Representative to China, Dr Gauden Galea.

“Every day, people, organizations and governments from around the world come together to combat the pandemic,” said Dr. Tedros, WHO Director-General in recorded remarks delivered at the launch ceremony. “Together with a network of foundation partners around the world, CPWF will work with WHO to facilitate donations from people and companies across China to support these life-saving efforts.”

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Li Jinhua, Vice Chair of 11th China People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and President of CPWF called for support to the global response. “Today, in active response to the call of the World Health Organization, we jointly launch the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO · Action of China in order to fulfill our moral responsibilities and obligations, and to enable charities and civil organizations to effectively play their role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

The COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO was announced by WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in March 2020, with the support of the UN Foundation and the Swiss Philanthropy Foundation.

Funds collected by the CWPF will go towards actions outlined in the COVID-19 Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan to enable all countries – particularly those most vulnerable and at-risk, and with the weakest health systems – to invest in preparedness efforts, and respond to the COVID-19 crisis including rapidly detecting cases, stopping transmission of the virus, and caring for those affected.

WHO is working with partners on initiatives to finance and supply protective equipment for frontline health workers; to equip diagnostic laboratories; improve surveillance and data collection; establish and maintain intensive care units; strengthen supply chains; accelerate research and development of vaccines and therapeutics; and take other critical steps to scale up the public health response to the pandemic.

Two months after its launch, the Solidarity Fund has reached more than $211 million raised or committed from more than 375 thousand individual donors, and more than 140 corporations and foundations. As of 15 May, $110 million in unearmarked funding has been allocated for WHO to procure and distribute essential commodities, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and testing kits to more than 135 countries. In addition, $40 million have been allocated at WHO’s request towards the World Food Programme, UNICEF and CEPI for critical activities in accelerating vaccine research and development, and reaching and supporting most vulnerable communities in low-resource countries.

The Solidarity Response Fund remains the largest mechanism for non-traditional donors to contribute directly to WHO’s efforts to the global response to this pandemic.
