What is Chucky about?

In this TV series adaptation, titled "Chucky," a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, and an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town's hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies and allies from Chucky's past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll's untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.

Who is Chucky?

Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray has become one of the most recognisable horror icons and has been referenced numerous times in popular culture. Known commonly as a "Good Guy doll", Chucky is a talking toy that contains the soul of a vicious serial killer. In most of the films, Chucky is given to a young child and starts terrorising his new family, who are shocked to find out their doll is alive.

What is Chucky the TV show?

In the new TV series, Chucky encounters 14-year-old middle school queer student Jake Wheeler at a yard sale. Jake's intentions are to use him for his personal art projects. Jake's father Lucas, who already disapproves Jake spending too much time "playing with dolls", is uncomfortable with his son's sexuality. The family dynamic is strained even further when Chucky attempts to cause deadly havoc in the house.

The show also features flashbacks of Chucky as a human, potentially hinting at showing the backstory of how Chucky ended up in the form of a kids' doll.

How is Chucky connected to the Child's Play movies?

The TV series acts as a direct sequel to all the Child's Play movies. Over the course of the seven films, Chucky has terrorised many families, managed to get married to Tiffany Valentine (Bride of Chucky) and even had a child (Seed of Chucky).

The most recent sequel was 2017's Cult of Chucky. Chucky's head was shot off by his original owner, Andy, yet some somehow he is still alive. The events of the film follow Chucky's next murderous rampage, killing disbelieving employees and tenants at a mental institution with various dramatic and hilarious tricks.

Do I need to watch all the Child's Play films to follow the TV series?

No. Although the series continues from the previous films, it features a brand new story.

Who's in the cast?

Brad Dourif, who has voiced Chucky since the 1988 Child's Play film, returns to voice the titular character. Zackary Arthur plays Jake Wheeler, a gay 14-year-old boy who purchases Chucky during a yard sale. Teo Briones plays Junior Wheeler, Jake's antagonistic cousin. Björgvin Arnarson stars as Devon Evans, Jake's crush and Junior's best friend. Casper and Final Destination star Devon Sawa portrays Lucas Wheeler, Jake's abusive father.

The series is also expected to feature actors and characters from the films, including Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany Valentine, Chucky's former lover and partner in crime; Fiona Dourif as Nica Pierce, a paraplegic woman who, since the events of Cult of Chucky, has been possessed by Chucky, and Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, Chucky's archnemesis, who has been tormented by him since 1988.

Who is the creator of Chucky?

The Child's Play films have all been written by Don Mancini, who has been consistently fleshing out his world's mythology with each new entry. Mancini took a somewhat autobiographical approach to Jake's character as he experienced bullying and abuse from his own father for being gay. Mancini told The New York Times "one particular scene from the pilot, in which Jake's father (Devon Sawa) hits the boy during an argument over Jake's sexuality, was particularly challenging".
