That route is amazingly scenic - especially I-70. There are a few deviations off that route you could do. We like McLure Pass which would have you leaving I-70 at Glenwood, south to Carbondale then over the pass, coming out east of Montrose. Probably takes a bit longer. If you go the Grand Junction route, go past Junction and get off at Fruita. Then drive through Colorado National Monument before you head south.

For an alternative on your way back, head down toDurango. You have several choices here. You could go back up to Ouray and down through Silverton and the Million Dollar Highway. Very scenic. Then head east from Durango to Pagosa Springs, over Wolf Creek Pass and on to Great Sand Dunes. Wind your way up US285 to US24 past Pike's Peak into Colorado Springs. You probably want to break this up a bit if you have time. If you don't have time, just skip Great Sand Dunes and take US285 into Denver.

Have fun.

We are wanting the most efficient route as we won't have time for sightseeing on the front end of our trip. My husband thinks the mountainous driving on Google Maps (routes 285 and 50) would be time consuming. Any thoughts?

Everything west ofDenver involves mountain driving. The upside to I70 is that its four lanes (or more) from Denver to Grand Junction. The 285/50 route is almost all two lane roads. Driving time is about the same on both routes, about 6.5 hours. Construction, accidents, or traffic will be more of a factor than the choice between these two routes. If you're arriving on a Friday evening there will be lots of traffic on I70, some on 285.

In your shoes, once I had the rental car and was heading away from the airport, I would check google or apple maps on my phone and do whichever route it said was quicker right then. I would also check the CDOT site, cotrip.org, to see if there was any construction or other delay-makers.

The quickest AND most scenic route betweenDenver and Telluride is 285 and 50. Through Buena Vista, over MONARCH PASS, and Gunnison to 550.

Skip driving on I-70 if you can help it.

Ditto what Wheatie said. My daughter leftDenver on I-70 Friday about 11 a.m. and traffic was very heavy, just creeping along until she got well past the Eisenhower Tunnel. She said it was just as congested or worse than ski season traffic on a weekend. Our kids who travel from the Front Range tell me that's often the case. One even goes south to Colorado Springs > Canon City > Salida.

I make the trip from theDenver area frequently. Either I-70 or Hwy285/Hwy 50 are a toss in terms of travel time. The I-70 route usually takes about 6 hours and the "southern" route (285/50) takes about 5 hours 50 minutes. If you plan to travel on a weekend (including Friday), the traffic on I-70 out of Denver can be challenging, but once you get past Frisco, it begins to break up and is usually smooth 4-lane cruising to Clifton, where you catch Hwy 50 (just before Grand Junction). On the other hand, if you take the Hwy 285 and Hwy 50 route over Monarch Pass, traffic is lighter and the drive is shorter (and should be faster), but one or two slow-moving vehicles on two-lane mountain roads can quickly kill the time advantage. Unless there is an obvious traffic issue, there is no clear advantage. The southern route is more scenic IMO.
