Take a look at the ingredients on both.

Take notice that most commercial soil mixes consist of mainly peat moss, perlite, and earthworm castings or compost. Then they amend it with with a calcium source like dolomite lime or oyster flour.

After that the base mix mix is then amended with various fertilizers of the manufacturer’s choosing. It can be as simple as blood, bone, and kelp meal or a specialty designer mix of exotic bug carcasses harvested from the amazon rain forest.

The only big difference between Ocean Forest and Happy Frog is the amount and variety of fertilizer added. Ocean Forest tends to be stronger especially in Nitrogen where as Happy Frog is a bit more of a milder mix.

Generally speaking you’d likely have to add fertilizer at some point using Happy Frog where as with Ocean Forest it’s pretty much obtainable to get away without additional fertilizer if you increase container size for the root ball and time the transplants well.

level 1

I used FFOF to start a seed and have had no problems. About to harvest!

level 2

I’m transplanting my seedling (2 weeks old) into a 3 gallon. Since it’s a lot of new FFOF soil being added, should I hold off on feeding nutes longer than another 2 weeks?

level 1

on my first auto flower grow. top half of pot is FFHF bottom half of pot is FFOF. no issues and my plants are just about ready for harvest. started to give some bloom nutrients when they started to flower. definitely will be doing this way again

level 2

Add a little recharge into the mix every couple weeks. your plants will thank you for it

level 1

Not sure about ocean forest but I’m wrapping up my first auto run with 3 different strains all in 100% happy frog and they all turned out great .. Started with low doses of nutrients about 3 weeks in and upped them to 50-75% doses the rest of the way after a week or two.

One of them got huge and I started giving her full doses for the past couple weeks and still no issues at all or any signs of nute burn. I’ll definitely use HF again

level 1

I just popped some seeds in happy frog. I initially was unaware that it was amended, but they popped a bit slower and seem to be kicking into high gear pretty quickly. I did have 1 or 2 die, but I think those were my fault.

level 1

I've now started 6 plants in ffof. No nute burning issues out the bag for me. I found I burnt my plants a little by feeding earlier than I maybe should have.

level 1

What week did you start feeding?

level 2

I use recharge & some dehydrated coconut water first month.

And keep it up with some NLS auto flower top dress & tea in flower.

level 1

With FFOF do you still need perlite??or do you just pour it in the pot and go?

level 2

Not OP but I use layered FFOF on the bottom & happy frog on the top. I do mix in a cup or two of perlite in each layer. Hope this helps

level 2

25% ratio added so 1/4 perlite and 3/4 soil so 75%

I'm reading good things about both for a first grow. Just having a hard time picking one as a potting soil for my super soil autoflowering concentrate! Thanks!!

Do yourself a favor and just get sohum been using fox farm ocean Forrest and happy frog for years fungus knats bug ridden soil stopped using them 2 grows ago but do what you will

level 2

Can u tell me more about sohum? Is it good for autos? What makes it so good? I’m not happy with Ffof right now. Too many problems. Thanks!!

level 1

I hate both. Always get fungus gnat infestation

level 2

I always hear this, but in 4 years of growing with FF, I've never had gnats.

level 1

I used FFOF for my first two grows and have switched to a mix of FFOF/FFHF/Perlite with a bit of powdered dolomite lime mixed in these past two runs.

I don’t give nutrients until I’m in flower unless I see a deficiency. I use FF nutrients (trio + bloom nutrients) at max 1/4 strength once a week or every 10 days during flower and that has worked just fine.

level 2

Do you run the liquid nutes or soluable? Thanks!!

level 2

im getting crazy 5.5 ph runoff from ffof right now. my plants are all lime green. i just added some dolomite lime hope i can raise this ph sheesh. is this why you add lime?

level 1

I've only used Happy Frog but my next grow I am going to start with HF in solocups and use that as a plug into OF when I transfer to the big pot. Shouldn't need nutes until flower.

Let you know in a few months.

level 2

Oh ok! So ill happy frog into solo cups and than ill transfer into the big pot with OF when it starts to flower. Thattl actually be perfect as I'm gonna be on vacation and all I want my cousin to do is littearly water lol.

level 1

Both have worked well for me, towards the end before I switched soils I was mixing them both 40/40/20, FFOF/FFHF/Perlite. I have since moved to biobizz since it's half the price.

level 2

Hey thanks! And you would add the NPK in later right?

level 1

If you want to go straight to your final soil after germ, then I would recommend coco loco. Great stuff! You will need to add nutes earlier though since it's not loaded up like ocean forest.

level 1

I use happy frog for seedlings, a mix of happy frog, ocean forest and perlite for veg, and ocean forest for flower.

Some people will tell you Ocean forest is fine for seedlings. It's not.

level 2

Do you add any additional nutrients?

level 1

I mix both. Heavier on the happy frog during seedling and veg. Heavier on the ocean Forrest during flower

level 1

If you're already going to add amendments and stuff it's worthwhile to just mix your own base. You can just start with equal parts compost (or 80/20 compost/worm castings) coco and aeration and tweek it as you like. You would have to buffer with dolomite lime though.

If you're dead set on bag soil and you're amending go happy frog. You're definitely gonna want to water once a week with yucca extract to help fight caking.

level 1

Not to hot.. and don't keep it went to get rid of gnats let it dry and keep good air flow

level 1

I suggest using Bush Doctor coco loco from the same brand

level 1

I do half and half then scoop out the middle and put only Happy Frog for the seedling. Works awesome. Also, I haven't gotten fungus gnats. Maybe a few. You throw some sticky pads in there and don't over saturate your mix. It's not that difficult. IMHO.

level 1

I prefer happy frog but have been using ocean forest for the last couple of runs because it was available and hf wasn’t. Seems like ocean forest has too much N for small plants because in both runs my clones clawed immediately with no feeding beyond the n that’s in cal mag. Also ran into magnesium deficiency which could be in part due to using an LED light instead of hps for the first time and not understanding that mag gets processed faster. I’d say use OF for the super soil mix that goes on the bottom and throw HF on top of that
