Maynard is the best professor at Stony Brook. I have taken several classes with him in my 4 years and he is so interesting.
You will not want to miss a class. Just show up and participate and you will get an A.
This was by far the best class and best professor I took at Stony Brook. I never wanted to miss a class (this coming from someone who doesn't particularly like school) Not taking a class with this man while at SB is a crime.

Very interesting class, very interesting professor. He's knowledgeable about history and music, as well. Made class fun to attend. Seems like a fun guy to hang out with. Very passionate about subject and has a lot to say - very witty. Def take this class
with him. Final exam is a take home paper, and only had to do one assignment and one blog. :)
Amazing teacher, makes a long class go by very fast. Speaks candidly and with humor about the subject material. Not too many assignments, Take it!!
He is my favorite professor. The readings are interesting, he is hilarious, and always helpful. Attendance is MANDATORY but it goes by fast because he is a great and lively professor I have had him
for SOC 339, SOC 315, and JRN 101 :)

I agree with the person below. Professor Maynard is one of the best professors ever. As people have previously said, he is NOT angry. He is just passionate and enthusiastic. He is firm but fair and knows what he is talking about. I wish there were more people like him at Stony Brook. Do yourself a favor and take his class if you can!
I feel that I have learned the most from his class than any other course I have taken in college. Professor Maynard is excellent! He really cares about his students, and there is never a dull moment in his class.You'll look forward to going. If you have the opportunity to take a class with this guy do not miss it! Best professor I've had!
Winter session went by so fast because he makes the class very interesting and knows how to keep the class' attention. Chose
excellent reading and media material. At times I didn't like too much that he was a bit opinionated but other times he made good valid points. He is nice but is NOT lenient. He is the no-nonsense type and has strict expectations. I loved his teaching style and would definitely take another class with him.
Great class, he got the author or our book to speak in class, which was on Jonestown and then he also got Jim Jones's son to speak in class, too. Really loves
to get his students involved in the class and to hear their ideas and opinions.
Greatest Teacher ever, made me care, laugh and cry. This guy should run for the Presidency or something. Great speaker, maybe a bit eccentric, but that just adds to his attractiveness. Don't miss this guy - take one of his classes before he goes to Hollywood.

because you were a jerk and thought you knew everything in the world loser. Gary is great and he can be a bit eccentric, but deal with it. Class material, books and lectures were excellent. Best Ever.
He is a little loud and passionate, but I like that. I can see where some people might mistake his passion for anger, but if he is mad it is because the world is stupid and he wants people to know so they can change it. Never learned more in my life in one class.
Highly recommend. Always has time for his students and always lets them talk in class.

teacher on earth. Smart, funny, well-prepared and cared about every aspect of his students lives and education. Whoever wrote the review that he is angry and makes fun of everything probably didn't do the work and got a bad grade and Gary did not seem to tolerate people who were lazy and stupid because they are lazy. Always was friendly.
I took him for American Society, summer session II, and to put it simply...he was pretty awesome. He's passionate, fun, and
uses a multitude of media to maintain your attention. At first i've mistakened his passion for anger, but he truly loves the material he teaches. He's just great, and a sight for sore eyes. FYI Attendance is imperative.
I took media and society over the summer in the morning and i've got to say he definitely keeps your attention! He shows movies and (current) youtube videos in class to prove his points; he's never boring and always wants to make sure u get what hes
trying to get across; i recommend him alot! he's an easy grader on top of it!
