To get the best of something/somebody.
"You got the best of me" - this means that you have some good sides, some bad sides, some worst sides, and some best sides. And "you" (in that sentence) got that the best side of "you" to "me".
In other words, you gave something best of you to him, something best what you have.

Sorry, I cannnot explain it better. =(

No, I don't think it's that, even if that is a (very plain, unadorned) possibility. Thus, we must know the context.

So, (comma needed ?) could I say these?

1. Kim beat me in the Maths Competition

(Or 'Maths competition'?). She had (or got?) the best of me. 'You got the best of me', I said.

2. The Greek won a war agaist the Turkish Empire. The Greek had

The idiom is 'get the best of (someone)'. Personally, I would never replace 'get' with 'have'.

Also, to me the sense of the idiom is that you allow something to control you, and this control affects you negatively or results in some sort of failure to do something that would have been better or preferable.

I wanted to discuss the problem reasonably, but my anger got the best of me.
