Meeting the Matriarch

Keep Raker Talking

The first part of Chapter 8 requires you to follow Raker as he leads you to the Matriarch. How you respond to him doesn’t seem to matter. What does is that you keep responding and keep him talking as you’re traveling on the floating platform. Doing so will give Rocket enough time to hack Raker’s drone. Just feign interest and keep asking him questions until you reach the Matriarch. Hacking the drone allows Rocket to know where to go later in the chapter.

If you don’t do this, Raker prevents Rocket from hacking the drone. This actually makes the trip to the Matriarch much shorter. Rocket won’t know which door to use later in the chapter. This isn’t of much consequence because you’ll figure out which door is correct fairly quickly.

The Promise

Once you’re in the Matriarch’s vision you’ll flashback to the day Peter’s mom died. However, this is current-day Peter, and he’s well versed in fighting off aliens. Jump through the window and shoot all the aliens that appear!

Once all the aliens have gone, your very grateful mother gives you a hug. You’re supposed to struggle out of the hug by mashing the melee button. However, you can embrace the hug and accept The Promise. This leads to a secret ending.

If Peter continues to hug his mom, the scene changes. Peter and the rest of the Guardians are visiting Mrs. Quill’s house and just having a good ol’ time together. Unfortunately, you’ll begin to notice that the edges of the screen are caving in. Eventually, the darkness consumes the screen and results in a game over. Select “Rethink Choice,” and you’ll return to the hug.

Break free of the hug by repeatedly pressing the melee button. Peter pushes his mom away. You need to aim and shoot her. You’ll have to shoot her again to finally break free of the delusion and gain the Mama’s Boy Achievement/Trophy.

Peter awakens in Ko-Rel's bedroom. Go out into the kitchen and you’ll find Nikki prepping for her mother's birthday surprise. Nikki needs you to do three things:

  • Interact with the cake at the end of the table.
  • Interact with and fix the hologram at the other end of the table.
  • Grab the present from Nikki’s room. When you enter Nikki’s room the present is on the right. Grab it and place it on the gift table in the corner near the window.

Once you’ve done those three things, you’ll need to wait for a knock at the door. Answer it and speak to Ko-Rel.

Raker Fight

Once you’ve snapped out of the illusion, you’ll need to fight Raker. For an old guy, he’s pretty fast. He also has many tricks up his sleeves that can even freeze you and your team members. Evasion is key. Attack him from afar and combo up your Guardian abilities. Raker can also darken the room which prevents you from locking on to him and using Guardian abilities. You have to shoot blindly and evade incoming attacks until the darkness recedes. After you’ve roughed him up a bit, he’ll retreat and send his goons after you.

Once his goons show up you’ll need to fight them all. Take out the Unifiers first! They’re the ones that float around and have the ability to power up their allies. They can also make a protective barrier around themselves. Shoot the barrier with your regular shots. Whenever their barriers are gone, use your Lightning Shots to stagger them substantially. Only once you’ve defeated all the unifiers should you focus your attacks on the other enemies.

Get to the Communications Room

After defeating all the enemies, platforms will descend from the center and more enemies will appear. You can run past all of them and just keep climbing up the platforms like stairs. When you make it to the top, run across the hall and jump into the hole at the end. In the maintenance shafts, head forward and use Drax to break the wall. Jump into the sludge and go for a slide.

After the slide, look to the right. Have Drax move the large block onto where you entered the area. Climb up the block and over the next platform to find a chest containing the Bad-Lord Outfit for Peter. Jump back down and exit through the door at the end of the hall.

You’ll find a bunch of enemies praying in the center of a huge room. If Rocket hacked the drone earlier in the chapter, you’ll know the door to the next area is the one on the back right corner of the room. If Rocket didn’t hack the drone… Now you know too! You can avoid fighting all the enemies and just head straight for the door!

In the next area turn to the right. Defeat the enemies; then, have Drax push over the large column. It won’t go the way you wanted, but hey, it’s a way out so jump through the hole in the wall. Follow the path through the maintenance areas and exit the next hallway by squeezing between the door panels.

Once you’ve fought all the enemies in the next room, head up the stairs and have Rocket hack the door to the comm room. Enter to trigger a cutscene.

Get to the Milano

Once you leave the Comm Room, there is a workbench located at the back of the next room. To the right of the workbench, there is a tall silver cylinder that Peter can jump on to get to the platform above. The device is located on the right next to some yellow crates.

Continue down the hallway and you’ll encounter a door that needs power. Go right and you’ll find a broken robot at the end of the hall. Grab the battery and plug it into the wall. You’ll need to speak to Drax to get him to enter the elevator. Then press the button to ride it up.

Ride the Skiffs

This next section requires riding the floating skiffs across the massive gap. As you’re riding the skiff you’ll be able to shoot the enemies flying near you to blow up their skiffs. You periodically abandon the skiff you’re currently riding, fight your way through a small area filled with enemies, and then find another skiff to ride. This pattern repeats until you finally make it to the large statue in the center and descend into the silo below.

Once you arrive at the silo, exit the skiff and walk all the way around the walkway to find the chest containing the Cage Match Outfit for Drax. Then walk back and use the door in the front. Fight your way through the next area, and you’ll exit at the end to trigger the next cutscene.

Gamora’s Mission

After spotting Raker and Nikki, Gamora will run off to pursue them on her own. Though she wants to do this solo, you can choose to chase after her. If you do this, Peter trips and causes Gamora to run back and rescue him. This ruins Gamora’s chance at reaching Raker and makes her furious! If you follow Gamora’s request and let her go off on her own, you’ll play the remainder of the chapter with Groot, Drax, and Rocket. Gamora returns at the start of the next chapter.

Whether you let Gamora go or not, you’ll need to defeat all the enemies in the area. Afterward, jump onto the platform on the right and have Groot make a bridge. Jump into the service pipes. Trek your way through the sludge to avoid the drone. At the end of your slide, you’ll need to double jump to avoid falling into the pit.

To the Exit

After your slide, you’ll need to reach the elevator at the far side of the area. You don’t have to fight these enemies. Keep following the path, and you can actually run past them. Fend off the enemies until the rest of your team reaches the elevator.

After your descent, exit the elevator and fight your way toward the left of the next area. Defeat all the enemies and Rocket will rig explosives on that side of the area. Defeat all the enemies that appear as Rocket is doing his thing. Once they’re all gone, Rocket will start working on another spot near the center of the area. Defeat all the enemies again and you’ll bust out of there.

The final section has you sliding down some pipes. Steer Peter toward the broken sections of the grates and keep an eye out for several bottomless pits you’ll need to jump across. Once you’ve made it to the end, your team will exit into the frozen emptiness of space. However, you’ll soon reach the Milano and advance to Chapter 9 - Desperate Times.
