India has won 11 of the 20 matches played between the two teams against each other, but has a poor record at home, losing five of the nine matches played.

The drawn T20I series between India and South Africa earlier this year was symbolic of the competitiveness characteristic of the two sides when they play each other in the format. It also fit the pattern of results: each team has a better record away from home than at home. Despite India’s home advantage and the unbearable heat in June that would have been especially discomforting, South Africa took a surprise 2-0 series lead before being outplayed in the next two matches. The final match was washed out.

If South Africa had won the series, the team would have avenged the series loss at home in 2018 when fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar made the difference between the two sides. India have faced South Africa eight times in T20I matches this year, out of which the Men in Blue have won four and lost three, while one game ended without a result. In T20 World Cup matches, both of them have faced each other five times, and here as well, India enjoys a dominant record. The Men in Blue have won four times and only lost once in the 2009 edition.

T20 World Cup 2007

India faced South Africa in Durban on September 20 in what was a must-win game for the MS Dhoni-led side, that too by a big margin if they wanted to make it to the semis, and riding on Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 50 from 40 balls and RP Singh’s 4 for 13 in four overs, India not only got the better of the hosts by 37 runs but they also managed to make it to the semifinals.

2009 T20 World Cup

The 2009 edition of the T20 World Cup was the only time when the South Africans managed to defeat India in T20 World Cup matches. The match was played at the Trent Bridge Stadium in Nottingham on June 16. South Africa batted first in that game and posted a total of 130 runs on the board for the loss of five wickets. It wasn’t a big ask, but India failed to achieve the target and fell short by 12 runs.

T20 World Cup 2010

In the 2010 T20 World Cup, India were again up against South Africa, and this time they faced each other in the group stage itself. The match took place at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St. Lucia on May 2 and in this game, Suresh Raina scored 101 from 60 balls to become the first centurion for India in T20I matches. Because of Raina’s superb show with the bat, India posted 186 runs on the board and then restricted South Africa to 172-5 in 20 overs to win the contest by 14 runs.

T20 World Cup 2012

The match between India and South Africa at the 2012 T20 World Cup was a closely fought one, but, in the end, India managed to win the contest by 1 run. India successfully defended the target of 153 runs in Colombo. For the MS Dhoni-led side, Lakshmipathy Balaji starred with the ball as he got rid of the Morkel brothers in the final over to win the match for India.

T20 World Cup 2014

In the 2014 edition of the T20 World Cup, India faced South Africa in the semifinal match on April 4 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, and in that game, Virat Kohli’s batting masterclass helped India win and reach the finals. Virat remained unbeaten on 72 from 44 balls and helped India chase down a 173-run target in 19.1 overs. It was also the last time when India and South Africa faced each other in T20 World Cup matches.
