It’s the 21st century and we are reliant on our GPS and navigation systems for getting us from point A to point B. We use navigation to get to appointments, vacation destinations, friends, and many more important locations...just about anywhere we need or want to go. Accuracy of the navigation maps on our cars is critical. The navigation maps need to be current and up-to-date.

But, these systems can become incomplete over time as roads and points of interest are changed. Updating the map database for your built-in Toyota navigation system requires either a self-install DVD or a visit to a certified Toyota service center, depending on your model.

How can you be sure that the Toyota navigation system in your car has the latest update? Let our experienced and knowledgeable team at Reliable Imports help you. We know how important this system is for you. With the same attention we provide in servicing your Toyota, we can make sure you have the most up-to-date maps in the navigation system. In this article, we give you information to walk you through updating your Toyota navigation maps.

Update by Installing a DVD

You can update the map database for your built-in Toyota navigation system with a self-install DVD, depending on your model.

  1. Confirm the model, year and options package of your Toyota vehicle.

  2. Confirm the model and version numbers of your GPS navigation system and installed map. Your owner’s manual may contain this information. On some Toyota GPS map systems, you can find this information by pressing “Menu” and then the “DVD” button on the touchscreen. Other Toyota GPS systems display this information when you press the “NAVI” button followed by “Map Data” on the touchscreen.

Updates for built-in navigation systems in the U.S. are only available from dealers, service providers, and Toyota. Updated map DVDs can often be mailed to owners for self-installation.

  1. Most built-in Toyota navigation systems are based on a map DVD that is installed in a dedicated player/reader in the vehicle, which may be installed under a seat, behind the radio or in the trunk, depending on your vehicle model.

  2. After installing the new DVD, retain the old DVD in case the new disc has a problem.

Take your vehicle to the dealer or service provider if your Toyota built-in GPS system uses a hard drive. These systems can only be updated at a service provider.
