How do I extend the remote start time on my Honda?

The remote vehicle start feature allows you to turn on your car from outside of the vehicle, using the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter. When you use the remote vehicle start, your engine will run for 10 minutes, or until you start driving. However, you can extend the amount of time that the engine runs by an additional 10 minutes: 1. Press the unlock button on the RKE transmitter. 2. Press and hold the remote vehicle start button on the RKE transmitter for at least two seconds. The turn signals will flash to confirm that the remote vehicle start has been extended. The remote vehicle start extension adds an additional 10 minutes to the run time, rather than resetting to 10 minutes. For instance, if the initial remote vehicle start has been running for five minutes, the extension will result in the engine running for an additional 15 minutes. Tip You can only extend the remote vehicle start once per cycle.

How does Honda Remote Starter Work?

A remote starter is a radio-controlled device. It is coded to reach out to your vehicle and to start the engine while you are still some distance away, such as your home, workplace or parking lot.

The first 2-way remote start systems were introduced in the 1980s, long before computers took over car systems.  The change over from keyed ignition to keyless ignition has made it easier than ever to include lock and unlock, climate control, trunk release and similar functions on a long range remote. Car starting is a logical function to add to a keyless entry remote.

Push button start, for instance, doesn’t have the mechanical parts that a keyed ignition would have. This allows sensors to direct its action more easily.  Likewise, the temperature controls on many Hondas have been automated. That’s allowed remote car starters to become more sophisticated. You can cool the cabin on our hot summer days or warm it up if you have ventured to northern climes.

Should You Get an After Market Starter?

A  remote starter must have the ability to bypass your car’s anti theft devices.  As such, it is always preferable to have a factory remote starter that is purchased through your Honda dealer. The manufacturer really discourages after-market remote start kits due to possible harm to Honda models.

Will the Remote Starter Adjust the Temperature?

Depending on the make/model/year, your remote starter can cool or heat the cabin.  In some cases, starting your vehicle should start your air conditioning or heater, assuming the temperature in the car is below the set temperature.  Some Honda remote starters will automatically activate the HVAC system to bring the temperature up or down to 72 degrees.

How Long Does the Car Run with a Honda Remote Starter?

The Honda will run for ten minutes. If you wish, you can extend it another ten minutes.

How is the Battery Protected During a Remote Start?

To protect the battery, the engine and climate system are running as well as the security system. However, the lights and other accessories remain off to prevent any unnecessary drain on the battery.

Honda Remote Start Tips

  • Never start your car in a confined space without sufficient air circulation.
  • If starting your car in a garage, the door should be up to ensure adequate ventilation.
  • To avoid fire, don’t use a remote starter if the vehicle is under a tarp or cover.
  • Make sure there are no flammable materials near your car when using the remote starter. This includes oil, grease and chemicals.

Where is Information on Your Specific Remote Starter?

The most likely place to find information on your specific remote starter is to consult your owner’s manual. Fortunately, these are online now from your dealer or brand website. You shouldn’t have to pay a dime for this information!
