How far are the redwoods from San Francisco?

Thinking of driving from San Fran to the redwood trees. How far a drive is this and what towns would be a good bet to lodge in?

Thanks,

Josh

Which redwood forest? There are redwoods as close as Muir Woods, which is very close to SF, in Marin County. There are redwoods inSanta Cruz (to the south). There are redwoods in Humbolt (VERY far north) and also along the way (Ukiah area, roughly speaking).

Umm, there are Redwoods in Redwood City...But I assume you are talking about Muir Woods perhaps? If that's the case then it's about a 45 min.-1hr drive from sf up highway 1. And get there early as the parking lot gets full with tour busses etc and then they won't let you in.

The GeneralGrant tree is a giant sequoia, also called Sierra redwood. They are a different species from the coast redwood, which is the lumber tree and the taller of the two--but the giant sequoias are bigger around and also very tall.

General Grant is in Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park about 5 hours southeast of San Francisco. You would probably want to stay in the lodge there John Muir Lodge. You can see giant sequoias closer to SF, at Yosemite and at Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

Coast redwoods grow much closer to SF, but most areas were logged in the past century and a half. Muir Woods, and Big Basin State Park have old growth redwoods, but these are not as big as the giant sequoias.

What are the closest redwoods to San Francisco?
