A business day means any day except any Saturday, any Sunday, or any day which is a legal holiday or any day on which banking institutions are authorized or required by law or other governmental action to close.[1]

For example, in the United States and much of the Western world, they are typically Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. By contrast, for many eastern countries such as Japan, the normal business day is Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.[2]

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, two German words of somewhat different meaning are used to describe business or working days. One is Werktag, a legal term applied to all calendar days except Sundays and public holidays;[3][4] it includes most Saturdays. Werktage are days on which businesses such as retail shops and institutions such as schools are generally allowed to operate (see also Ladenschlussgesetz). In contrast, Arbeitstag refers to a day on which someone actually works. For most employees, these are Monday to Friday. However, for example, a firefighter might have an Arbeitstag on Sunday even though it is legally not a Werktag.

Legal documents and shipping all seem to have this confusing measurement tool not everyone understands, the business day. This is a unit of time the Western world uses to typically mean the days from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

The financial sector views a business days meaning as any day the banks or markets are open. That tends to exclude holidays or weekends.

Online shopping refers to business days as the amount of time between placing an order for the latest Amazon hot gadget to receiving and unboxing it. It can get confusing sometimes because not everyone knows the difference.

If you order a customized pillowcase for your Grandmother’s birthday and the shipping notice says delivery in 5 business days, you will have to wait 5 periods from 9am-5pm on weekdays.

For example, suppose you ordered the pillowcase that reads “Greatest Grandma Ever!” on Wednesday. In that case, you will have to wait Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday and Wednesday of the following week before you’ll receive the package.

How Long is 7 Business Days?

This question is also a bit misleading because we are taught in school that one week equals 7 days. That isn’t true when you think about how long is a business day.

If you have a company trip that lasts 7 business days in sunny Hawaii, firstly, you are incredibly lucky, and we all want your job.

Secondly, that means you’ll be balancing meetings and sweet island drinks on the sand for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday.
