How long is a Navy SEAL contract Reddit

For the people doubting him the Seal Challenge contract is offered to people who pass a minimum PFT test/ASVAB and they are GUARANTEED a shot to try their hand at SEAL training. The current pipeline upon signing the contract is: Boot camp, Great Lakes 'Pre-Buds' (1-3 months of PT basically), Bud/s Indoc (sort of redundant with the Great Lakes program in place IMO), Bud/s (this is where the majority of drops happen, specifically in first and second phases (gut check phase and combat diver phase). After Bud/s they are off to SQT (where actual seal training happens) and then off to the Teams.

The AF/Army and Navy all offer these guaranteed try-out programs, and they have been around for quite some time now. These spec op programs have attrition rates in the 70-90%, with a very large chunk (90% or so) of those being due to DOR (drop on request) and not due to medical reasons. Enlisted men who DOR can tryout again after a waiting period of 1-2 years, most men who drop due to medical reasons will simply refill into the next class after they are medically cleared. Men who complete all the training can also be dropped by the cadre due to perceived lack of commitment or effort, although from my understanding this is less prevalent in bud/s than in other similar programs.

If anyone has any other questions regarding any of these programs feel free to ask here and I will do my best to respond.

I've visited google, to no avail.

How long is the average Seal career?

Yes, I know the contract length is 6 years, but I'd like to know the estimated average.

Is it more common to do 6 years, 12, or even 25?

Thanks.

Can you expand on how you’re not able to join for 6? But the contract length won’t change so the answer is still no

level 1

The Navy isn’t gonna spend all that time and money just for you to spend two years in the Teams. Just go be a Ranger dude

level 1

No and the people that you need to take you seriously won’t with those kinds of questions. There are so many wannabe’s which allows the Navy to pick only the best candidates to class up. In other words, people without extenuating circumstances.

level 1

Isn’t a work up for a deployment like 18 months ? So two years to become a Seal then a year and a half of training with your platoon youll be starting to ets out of the navy before you even “might” get a shot to do what the Navy has been spending a shit ton of money training you for lol . No way the Navy will give you a 4 year contract .

level 1

Did some research, and came upon this:

"6 years total on active duty. Only if you graduate from BUD/S. The enlistment is actually for 4 years with a 2 year extension when you graduate BUDS they make you an E-4 and extend you 2 years."

level 2

I can lend some credence to this. Had a friend DOR in late 2015, he was out of the military 3.5 years later. So the extension only gets added if you graduate from BUD/S, based on this.

level 1

Does the extra two years get added on only upon completion of BUDS/SQT or is it when you sign the papers at the recruiters office?

level 2

The way it worked for ET/FC was that you won't get AECF in your contract UNLESS you first commit to six years. I imagine it's something similar for SEAL contracts. No way they're going to hand you a SEAL contract without you already signing that commitment.

level 1

Got some other shit to do, huh?

How long is a Navy SEAL contract Reddit

Last week in our Navy Warrior Challenge group chat our scout said: “If you’re trying out for SO, February will be the last draft for the foreseeable future.”

Has anyone gotten similar news? Anyone have more insight, I know they’ve been handing out only 50 contracts a month, but it seems like from this news that they’ll put a hold on it or lower the contracts even more.

March - September slots are full.
Edit: from NSW Scout

level 2

I can second this. Source : doing PSTs at Coronado, CA . Recruiter mentioned it as well

level 1

How long is “foreseeable future”. I’ve got a little less then 3 years of school.

level 2

You're probably fine, that is a ways away still and anything can happen. They are probably trying to unfuck the pipeline right now for the most part and then open the valve to what they need at this present time. Shit is probably closed so they can get ahold of the COVID shit that completely fucked up everything for them

level 2

Same here dude. Ive got 2 more years of school but was planning on joining the DEP my last semester. Im curious what the future holds

level 1

if this is true i look at it as more time to prepare & more motivation to get those pst scores the best that you can. Regardless of how long it takes eventually things have to open back up and go back to normal.

level 1

If it’s from Feb-Sep, that’s only 7 months. It’s not like they’re disbanding the SEALs altogether.

If you’re truly passionate about SEALs, it’s a short wait, and one that you could use very wisely. If you just wanna serve in any SOF, the 75th Ranger Regiment is really looking for good candidates.

level 1

So is the draft and autoqualing a separate thing? Like you’d still be able to autoqual and get a contract eventually

level 1

My recruiter just sent me this “Gotta watch the internet sources. We are still writing SO contracts. “

level 1

Man that’s gay might as well be a Ranger🥸🥸

level 2

There's a lot of misconceptions about Ranger batt on this subreddit, first, fairly certain Option 40 contracts aren't available as a result of COVID either. Second, don't think you're going to be skull stomping jihadists as a young Ranger any time soon. The wars are over.

level 2

That’s what I’m thinking too

level 1

When will the pipeline go back to normal 😫

level 1

Is this across all branches for SO, or is it just the seals getting to full. Will things go back to normal with COVID dying down in say 2022

level 2

FYI... "SO" is a rate that means SEAL. That's the official term for enlisted SEALs. OP is talking about SEALs. And no, this is not SOF wide. You can definitely get to try out for other SOF units like the Ranger Regiment.

level 1

when will they be giving out contracts again? In that case should I just try to go ranger or stick with my original plan with the SEALs?
