How long is Grand Blue on hiatus for?

Grand Blue Dreaming manga, written by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka, will be on a hiatus from the February issue of Kodansha’s Good! Afternoon magazine. Yoshioka’s back pain was stated as the reason for the manga going on a hiatus. The announcement on Twitter reported that this issue was caused due to overwork.

The manga will be on a break until Yoshioka recovers from his back pain. Yoshioka is also the illustrator for Amagi Brilliant Park, Soukyuu no Lapis Lazuli; Rinne no Lagrange: Akatsuki no Memoria.

Grand Blue, also known as Grand Blue Dreaming has been published in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine, Good! Afternoon, since April 2014. The series has been collected into 15 tankobon volumes as of May 2020. An anime adaptation inspired by the manga aired in July 2018.

Kodansha Comics is releasing the manga digitally in English. The overview of the plot is as follows;

The story revolves around Iori Kithara, a teenager who is joining Izu University as a freshman. Izu is a seaside town with ocean waves and sunshine goes hand in hand. Iori has a dream college life . He wants a college life surrounded by beautiful girls and a hand full of good friends. Iori moves into his uncle’s scuba diving shop.

He meets a bunch of rowdy naked seniors who want him to join them for drinking alcohol as soon as he enters the shop. He is immediately a fan favorite among the seniors. The fun soon ends when his cousin, Chisa Kotegawa, enters and scorns him. Will Iori have his dream college life or will he encounter something completely different?

A leak confirmed that the manga was written by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka, Big bluehas been paused indefinitely due to the author’s deteriorating health Kenji Inoue. The editorial office Kodansha will announce the resumption date when possible, and in fact Inoue had already foreseen that the reason for the hiatus was an operation:

«I’m not sure what’s wrong with my back and I’m going to have major surgery. So there will be another ban. If you’ve been waiting for the next chapters, I’m so sorry!» he wrote on March 27 on his official Twitter account. This would be his last update on social media as of the date of writing this article.

How long is Grand Blue on hiatus for?

Inoue and Yoshioka started publishing the manga in the magazine Good! afternoon from the publisher Kodansha in April 2014. The manga has been on several hiatus due to the author’s health, and the publisher released the sixteenth compiled book volume in Japan in November 2020. The play inspired a studios-produced 12-episode anime adaptation. Zero Gdirected and screenplays written by Shinji Takamatsureleased in July 2018. So far there are no signs of a second season.

Summary of Grand Blue

Iori Kitahara is just starting his freshman year at university. He moves into his uncle’s dive shop, Grand Blue. He awaits the college life of his dreams, filled with beautiful girls and good friends. But things don’t quite go according to plan. Along the way, he comes across a group of students who immediately force him to participate in their drinking activities. Although Iori is initially unwilling, he quickly gives in and becomes the focus of the party. Unfortunately, this earns him the scorn of his cousin Chisa Kotegawa. However, Iori still vows to fulfill his ideal college life, but will things go to plan this time?

Grand Blue Dreaming has gone on hiatus once again following one of the creator's hospitalization. Fans keeping up with new issues of Grand Blue (licensed as Grand Blue Dreaming in English) have gotten used to waiting for new releases lately as Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka's original manga series recently came back from a hiatus due to Inoue's poor health. It's been successfully running in new issues of Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine since its return in March, but unfortunately the series will be heading into yet another hiatus soon due to one of the creators being hospitalized.

The newest issue of Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine (as reported by Anime News Network) revealed that due to one of the creators being hospitalized after a sudden emergency (although there was no confirmation of which of the series' two creators it was nor a reason given for the hospitalization), Grand Blue Dreaming will be going on hiatus. Thankfully, this hiatus won't be very long as Kodansha also revealed that the manga will resume with new entries in June.

If you wanted to catch up with Grand Blue Dreaming while this hiatus is active, you can actually read new chapters of the series with Crunchyroll. They release the new chapters alongside their debut in Japan, and it's a good way to get acquainted with the series before its return. The series also made its official anime debut a couple of years ago, and ran for 12 episodes in total if you'd like to check out the series that way instead.

There was also a live-action film produced for Grand Blue Dreaming released in Japan, but it has yet to be released internationally as of this writing. Kodansha Comics has licensed the series for an English language release and they officially describe the series as such, "After moving out on his own to a seaside town, Iori Kitahara makes a college debut he never anticipated. A new chapter of his life unfolds, full of diving with beautiful girls and shenanigans with a gaggle of lovable bastards! Idiot-expert Kenji Inoue and au naturel authority Kimitake Yoshioka bring you a glorious college tale filled with booze-fueled antics!"
