I think the 5 1/2 drive is more accurate. I make the drive several times a year. The shortest route is 75 to Macon, then I16 toSavannah then I95 to Route 278. that leaves you about 18 miles out.

The Atlanta area has a great deal of traffic which slows the trip down.

It is 4 1/2 hours from the airport to the beginning of the island.

we have done it before in 5 1/2 but one year took us about 7 with traffic and a breaks for lunch.

We live on the North side ofAtlanta off of I85 and shoot for 4 1/2 hours to the South end of HHI using cross island pkwy (not speed limit driving of course). As stated above, traffic can slow you down coming through Atlanta if leaving from Smyrna.
