A mass shooting is defined as an incident that involves several victims of gun violence. There is not an exact definition, but several groups have come up with specific criteria for what defines a mass shooting. The Gun Violence Archive states that a mass shooting involves at least four people aside from the perpetrator of the act. These victims must have been shot in the same location at approximately the same time. On the other hand, the Congressional Research Service has defined a mass shooting a little differently, stating that a mass shooting has fatalities.

For the purpose of this article, we’re going to look at data based on the Gun Violence Archive’s definition. This means that a mass shooting is defined as four or more people that were shot at the same general location and time. This data also looks at mass shootings since 2013 through August 2019.

Throughout the nation, there have been over 2,100 mass shootings during this time period. Over 2,400 people have been killed, while over 9,000 have been injured in these incidents.
