A grant from the Bloomberg City Leadership Initiative out of Harvard University has funded a

research project into the city of Amarillo’s gun violence trends. For 10 weeks over this summer,

a graduate of Harvard masters’ program was able to work closely with the Amarillo Police

Department (APD) and analyze data from over 400 police records of violent shootings that

occurred within Amarillo over the past 12 months.

According to the American Center for Progress, “from 2019 to 2020, homicides rose by 28

percent across the United States. In the same period, gun homicides rose by 35 percent, and

gun-related deaths among Americans ages 19 and younger increased by nearly 30 percent.

Gun violence is among the leading causes of death for youth in the United States. This violence

disproportionately affects Black and Latino communities.” Similar trends can be found here in Amarillo.

The Amarillo Police Department was called out to the 2800 block of Oak Drive.  Someone had found a dead body laying by the dumpster.  The body was that of a male, but no other identifying information was released.

Unfortunately, this man's death marks the 21st unofficial homicide in Amarillo this year.  Twenty-one other people have been killed in Amarillo in 2022.  This should shock us.  One murder is too many.

Murder #20 was a beloved teacher and mother, Shereena Webster. She was killed on August 18th, the suspect was her ex-boyfriend.

Homicide with a hint of deja vu happened on July 28th.  A man was assaulted in Eastridge Park and died from his injuries.  The eerie part of this murder was a murder in 2016 that happened just like this particular murder in the park.

I could go on with the list of murders so far in Amarillo, but I won't.
