How long would a fifty-pound bag last for 1 adult? I am hoping to get mylar bags and 5-gallon buckets to better store what I have. I was just curious how much rice an adult would go through in a year. Thanks for your help.

I have greatly appreciated this forum and the encouragement, insight, and help people have given the past few months. Sadly, there are not a lot of people who are willing to consider some of the things that have happened, are happening, and seem to be on the horizon.

It depends on how often you eat it but here is a chart that should help.

Calories per cup. Keep in mind most adults would require about 2000 calories a day in today's world. Possibly as much as double that if you are doing physical work all day.

If you eat it daily, depending on how much, about 3-5 lbs a week.

I think a 1/4 cup of white rice is a serving, if you agree, then a 50lb bag of rice is 425 servings...with beans or something else to make a decent meal.

1 adult eats 3x's per day x 365 days=1095 meals a year

That represents but a part of both our diet though.

Variety is very important. If you have only one grain, for example, you will probably develop an allergy to it. White rice is not very nutritious.

You have to be realistic when it comes to serving sizes. A cup of cooked rice and a cup of cooked beans is not much food. Dealing with the stress right after a SHTF situlation is not the time to "starve" yourself. Plans meals so you at least feel full (and meet nutritional requirements) for the first couple of weeks. I've always viewed the serving sizes as a "last resort" rationed serving. When you look at freeze dried #10 cans and they say something like 15 servings then you notice that they measure a serving as 1/2 a cup to a cup. I always cut the servings available in half. Don't buy based on servings buy based on the amount you're use to eating.

I covered this kind of thinking/calculation in a thread I started:

Bottom line: you have to know what your daily caloric requirements are (for you and your family) and work backwards from there. There are various online calculators for figuring out calories for rice, beans, etc.

A 20 lb bag lasts my wife and I about 6 months. We break it down into zip lock baggies and put them in free food grade plastic icing buckets that we get from Sams Club. I really like their Basmati Rice. Good luck.

I feed my family of six 2 cups of rice for a normal dinner.

Should it be an emergency situation, I have assumed 3 cups for us or 1/2 cup per person per meal. 3 cups is about a pound.

It is far better to overestimate what you would eat then underestimate it.

If rice is your only starch, you'd want it for 2 meals a day, I think. So, 1 cup a day per person. Your 50 lbs of rice is 150 days worth of rice for 1.

These are all approximates that I use for my family.

Yup, I think WEA says around 4,000 calories required per person in the bush when it is warm. I think WEA then doubles that (they at least increase it) for cold winters like here in Michigan's U.P. or Minnesota, etc.

It would last long enough for me to think "Boy, do I hate rice."

Well, that can't be right. Michigan has one of the country's highest obesity rates, even though the winters get cold. So those people are definitely NOT using up all the extra calories from the free soda refills.

Read my thread. It's 2000/day for men, 1500/day for women on average.

At 1,500 calories per pound or 75,000 calories per fifty-pound bag. You need to eat 2500 cal per day minimum if you are doing even light work; so 30 days would use up your 50 lbs if that is all you have to eat.

maybe you misunderstood. The calorie counts WEA suggests are not for stagnant city dwellers. It's suggested for deep bush living where one is actually moving around...people with heated homes don't have to do anything, but if you're out in Michigan winter camping, you'll have to be getting a lot of fire wood. It's also harder to move, your body will be working harder to keep you warm. Again, what I said is not for stagnant or people not living in the bush at all.

And that would be fine if you're not doing much. When you have to check your traps, tend to your garden, tend to live stock, tend to fish, hunt, repair structures, gather fire wood, improve your situation, etc. In other words, when you're not living in the luxury of every day fast food and microwaved pizza and actually HAVE to do something for yourself, when you actually have to WALK because there is no gas, no car, your calorie intake drastically increases.

You're right, but all that checking traps, tending gardens, hunting etc is adding calories to your diet too. Your LTS staples wouldn't be your sole caloric intake anyway.

I was planning for a protracted "hunker down" mode where we might have to live off the LTS food for months.

How many servings of rice are in a 50 pound bag?

and it is about 10 servings.

How much rice do I need for 75 people?

We recommend making 50-65g of uncooked rice per person. If you have a kitchen scale, weight the rice before cooking to make sure you're using the correct amount. Eyeballing it can lead to making too much or too little.

How many cups of rice are in 50 pounds?

The 6 pound bag will have close to 24 cups, the 18 pound bag close to 72 cups, the 37.5 pound bag close to 150 cups and the 50 pound bag close to 200 cups.

How much rice do I need for 60 people?

If you are making 60 1/2cup servings of rice you would need 15 cups of uncooked rice. Or if you are going with 3/4 cups per person, you would need 22.5 cups of uncooked rice.
