How much did Plant get paid for the Canelo fight?

Canelo Álvarez and Caleb Plant face off on Saturday to become the undisputed champion of the super middleweight division. Any Canelo fight is high profile, but this one is especially so as he looks to finish off cleaning out the division.

This is a big money for fight both boxers. Canelo is due to earn a guaranteed $40 million while also claiming 60% of PPV proceeds, per multiple reports. Plant is slated to earn a guaranteed $10 million plus 40% of PPV proceeds.

Canelo earned an estimated $35 million for beating Billy Joe Saunders in his last fight. He’s quick worked his way up the financial ladder in recent years. A decade ago he made a reported $1 million for his fight against Kermit Citron. His first fight with eight-figure earnings came in 2018 when he made an estimated $15 million for his first super middleweight fight, against Rocky Fielding.

Plant is making far and away his largest purse. In his last fight, against Caleb Truax, he made $750,000 in guaranteed money. Canelo opponents have done well for themselves even if they are more likely than not to lose. In the Canelo-Saunders fight, the challenger earned an estimated $8 million, per Mike Coppinger.

Alvarez split from his $365 million deal with Golden Boy and Dazn last year but will still take home a whopping $40 million for his fight with Plant this weekend

Boxing: Canelo celebrates victory over Saunders

Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant will both enjoy huge paydays from tonight's super-middleweight clash.

Either Alvarez or Plant will be crowned the first-ever undisputed 168lb champion in boxing history in Las Vegas.

And Alvarez will earn $40million for the unification fight, whilst underdog Plant will take home $10 million, although both fighters' pay cheques will not be final until the pay-per-view sales of the fight are released.

Boxing's biggest attraction Alvarez will step into the ring for the fourth time in less than a year against Plant having won super-middleweight titles from Callum Smith last December.

He then retained his belts against Avni Yildrim in February and captured Billy Joe Saunders' WBO title in May to leave him one short of the complete collection.

Alvarez signed an 11-fight deal with DAZN in 2018 that would see him bank at least $365m. At the time, Alvarez's contract was the largest ever signed by a professional athlete.

The first fight on his deal came against Rocky Fielding in December 2018, with Alvarez picking up a quick stoppage win to become a four-weight world champion.

Alvarez made $35m for his 2019 wins against Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev but the Mexican filed a civil suit against his promoter Golden Boy and broadcast partner DAZN last year over their alleged failure to deliver on the terms of his mammoth contract.

Alvarez sought $280m in damages from the lawsuit and the right to schedule fights without input from Golden Boy or DAZN.

He didn't fight again for over a year after his win against Kovalev, reaching an agreement to exit his deal in November 2020.

Alvarez returned against Smith in December of that year, but in the first fight since parting ways with his promoter he banked considerably less at $20m.

For his wins against Yildrim and Saunders this year, the pound-for-pound No.1 took home $35m.

Alvarez's fight with Plant will mark his fourth as a free agent.

His old broadcast partner DAZN recently partnered with Matchroom Boxing and is in the process of transitioning their introductory price of £1.99 to £7.99.

Matchroom supremo Eddie Hearn said the broadcaster's introduction of pay-per-view is "inevitable in certain unique situations".

"Absolutely 100 per cent the aim of DAZN is to bring you traditional pay-per-view nights we've seen in the last five years as part of the monthly subscription," he told Boxing Social.

"They need to have a pay-per-view functionality for unique circumstances, that's the keyword. When you look at it now, Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua.

"That is not gonna go as part of your DAZN subscription, being quite frank with you."

The breakthrough came in round 11, and the finish was ruthless

The fight began with some positive early signs for Plant as his jab troubled Canelo early on.

It did not take long for the Mexican to start closing the distance though, as he consistently cut of the ring and hammered Plant with hooks to head and body.

Canelo finally made the breakthrough in round 11 as he smashed Plant with a left hook which put him on wobbly legs and then floored him with a follow-up right uppercut.

The American made it back to his feet, just about, but fought on for only seconds more before being put down again and finished with a series of right hands.

With the victory, Canelo was crowned undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super-middleweight champion of the world.

The guaranteed purses (not including PPV extras) have been revealed for the fight, according to Dan Rafael.

Canelo reportedly earned a guaranteed purse of $40million.

Plant reportedly earned a guaranteed purse of $10million.

Since becoming a free agent a year ago, Canelo has been able to negotiate independently with promoters to secure the best deal possible for his fights.

For his fights with Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders, he worked with Eddie Hearn on DAZN.

For Plant, he’s worked with Al Haymon on Showtime PPV.

It is unknown where the Mexican will choose to fight next, having previously stated that all options remain open as he retains his independence.
