How often should you condition curly hair Reddit

Sorry if this is a silly question, I’m a curly girl raised in a straight hair house!

I condition my hair every day, but I’m not sure if that’s good for my hair. The guides say not to cleanse more than once a week, I wasn’t sure if that applied to conditioner as well. I don’t like the idea of dirt sitting on my scalp for that long, but I want to make sure I’m taking care of my hair correctly. I also feel gross if I don’t detangle my hair at night and I can’t really do that without conditioner, but would it be better to use a detangling product?

Thanks in advance! :)

Every time I wash my hair, which I aim to do at least every other day but sometimes less often than I could wish.

I also deep condition over night a couple of times a month.

Historically I have washed (and conditioned) my hair every day but I am old and decrepit now and there is no heat in my bathroom - so due to fatigue and generally being wimpy about getting out of a hot shower into a freezing cold room, I don't manage every day any more. I never wash without conditioning, and I don't co-wash as that leaves my scalp feeling all grungy and disgusting.

I recently picked up a tiny little space heater for in there but that hasn't done anything to energize me, LOL!

How often should you condition curly hair Reddit

So I'm starting to grow my curls out and my hair dresser said that as they get longer the curls will get more dry. She suggested conditioning more, but how much is too much?

I read online it's normal to condition once a week max. For drier hair should I do twice or three times?

i use shampoo every 2-4 days, but i condition every day usually, occasionally i skip a day. but i only use products on the first day. this works for my dry hair, greasy scalp. but i only condition from my ears down after the first day

What types of products do you use outside of conditioner and shampoo?

I think you’ll be surprised to discover how much conditioning your curls can actually handle. I’m guessing that whoever said they only condition once a week did NOT have curly hair. Curls need more moisture!

Thank you! I'm pretty nervous because this is my first time really growing my curls out and I dont want to mess them up with frayed ends

I condition with each shampoo, which is three times a week. I also use a deep conditioner and leave it for the better part a day or overnight to give a major influx of moisture once per week. I like to put the deep conditioner on in sections, then put a shower cap over it for several hours. If I'm doing it overnight, I put a beanie over the shower cap. I use Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Hair Mask mixed with about a quarter sized amount of Curls Blueberry Bliss Hair Growth Oil in each section.

So what's the difference between conditioning and deep conditioning? Also how well does hair growth oil work?

I know it's usually said that it's not healthy to Shampoo your hair every day

But what about Conditioning? Taking into account a CG Approved Conditioner, is it okay to apply it to your hair every day in the shower? I find that using a conditioner always makes my hair look good.

Yep, and in fact you should be doing it every day unless you have miracle hair. The thing with most curly hair is that it sucks up moisture like a bendy straw, and often is very dry as a result. Conditioner will help keep the strands strong and smooth, and is totally fine (especially if you use a CG friendly conditioner). I also suggest deep conditioning once a week, or more of you have very dry hair.

As long as I don't condition my roots I don't notice any adverse effects! Especially when the weather starts cooling down and heaters are blasting everywhere

I find as I don't produce much oil anyway, I can put conditioner into my roots and it is the right amount to help the softness of it, so I'm still needing to put more lower down the hair...

I condition mine every day because if I don't it's guaranteed to dry up and frizz out. Like someone else said, I keep the majority of my scalp and really condition the ends to keep them moisturized. I even put a little conditioner back in my hair when I'm done, since I'm in a place with hard water and crazy humidity.

I don't get my hair wet in the shower every day, but on days that I don't co-wash, I get my hands wet, squirt a squirt of conditioner into them, and run them through my hair. A little bit more water through my hair, a tiny bit of gel or mousse, a quick scrunch, and I'm out the door.

What happens if you condition curly hair everyday?

Product buildup. Some ingredients in conditioner can build up on your hair over time. This is called product buildup, and it can leave your hair feeling waxy, dry, or greasy. The layer of buildup prevents water from penetrating your strands, causing them to grow dry and weak.
