“Deception Ruins Lives”

9/5/21

Its been approximately 8 months since I used AnyLabTestNow.com to find out if there was DNA between me and my alleged half sister, my father's daughter. The company was referred to me as a company with national presence. My youngest daughter and my half sister's daughter had connected through 23 & Me as 1st cousins. Photos were shared of their parents and it was discovered that me and my niece's mom looked like twins. My dad told me when I was about 11 years old that I had a half sister that was around my age and looked like me. He wasn't allowed to know her because her mom was married and she preferred to keep him a secret. Her mother's husband was listed as her father on my sister's birth certificate. So my sister had no idea that she had siblings and we would learn nothing more about her. I had forgotten her first name and never knew her last. When her daughter mentioned her name it rung a bell so I knew my lost sister had been found. I started talking more to my niece. Her mother did not believe that the 23 & Me DNA report could be true, so my neice and I decided to seek out a different way to prove our relationship. To me our photos spoke volumes and I had the story from my dad's mouth. My sister had another man's name on her birth certificate and no knowledge that she had three additional sisters. I wanted to know her because I always wondered where she was and if she was okay. Enter AnyLabTestNow.com. I figured a DNA test by a lab would be significantly better at testing closeness so that is why I chose this path instead of Ancestry.com or 23 & Me. We knew were related but was she indeed my sister. I checked the website to see if there was a test for half siblings whose parents were no longer living. I could not find a test that would work so I called and explained that neither of our parents were living and her daughter would be willing to do a test with me if there was such a test. The lady said the test I wanted was called an Avuncular Test and since I was the alleged aunt, a test between me and the daughter would work. Since would have to use DNA from her daughter who lived in another state, the national lab seemed a natural choice. I asked about how it would work across state lines and the rep explained that we could both go to a testing site even if it wasn't on the same day, all results would be collected and the test run and results would be sent to me. On the day we scheduled to do the test, I went in first, reiterated that my and my half sisters parents were deceased and that I am the aunt and my niece would take the test in another city after mine. I was then informed that they would be unable to give an accurate result unless my half sister did the test as well. We weren't sure we could make that happen but we were able to get her to comply so I did my DNA that day as scheduled and my niece did hers in her state, and the following Monday my half sister did hers in still another state. I paid for the entire thing. $479,25, and 35 a total of $539.00. When the results came back it stated we had less than 1% in common. So I called to make sure there was no error because it said results related to paternal father. The lady said was it didn't matter whether the results said maternal or paternal, the result was clear that we all three had no DNA in common. I called around including their headquarters and they explained that the test was run to isolate my neice's father's DNA and then matching it to mine as his sister. I already knew I was not the sister of my niece's father. They failed to tell me that they could not accurately run this test for relation between me and my half sister without, at a minimum, my father's sibling who is also deceased. That was information not disclosed to me and I feel they knowingly took my money when they knew a proper result could not be had. They have not responded to calls or emails (Feb 4,, 2021 and April 13,2021) regarding this nor have they offered any remedy including refunding even any portion of my money. I moved on to Ancestry.com and so did my sister after the initial lab test could not be resolved. Per Ancestry.com we indeed have DNA matching. We know for pretty sure now we are siblings. Since my sister did not know about us before, knowing through DNA was a extremely important step to any further relationship. I am writing this, not so much about the money, but about the deceptive trading and subsequent dismissal of my complaint without any attempt of AnyLabTestNow to communicate with me or offer any resolution to the matter. DNA testing has many implications that go beyond just finding out about a lost sibling, there are other implications that might affect a person's right to inheritance, family law case outcome or other responsibility. To blatantly have no care in carrying this responsibility to provide the most accurate data to a family is disconcerting. To make matters worse, choosing to ignore emails and phone calls so you don't have to provide an explanation or solution for your lack of knowledge or intentional negligence is even more disturbing for a company of this nature. I am certain that a national lab is doing something right, but apparently they are not willing to address their mistakes which is sadly unfortunate. Although it is noted that some of these locations are independently owned, they do share a name, AnyLabTestNow.com. What do I want to see happen? I would like no other person to be tricked into taking a test because they cannot count on the representative being honest in a field that a layperson has no knowledge about. The testing is not cheap, so if you want to know relation in a case like mine where "paternal" parents or siblings are deceased or otherwise unavailable, I suggest using a company like Ancestry.com. You will at least get a match or not. These people test for "paternity" but if you don't disclose whose "father" is being tested, you are deceiving someone into taking a test. Had I known that the test we took was testing my niece's father's DNA to see if I was his sister, I would not have done the test. I already knew I was not her aunt on her father's side. I would have spent the money at Ancestry.con instead and seen if we were able to match that way. I also would have been spared the embarrassment of telling my half sister that the results said we were unrelated with no DNA in common. In July 2021, I traveled 13 hours with my husband to see my "twin" sister. My youngest sister flew in and together we met our sister for the first time. I also met my neice and my great niece's for the first time. Instant rappore and our resemblance is uncanny. We are 60 and 61 (I am 60) at the time of this writing. She is lovely and I am grateful to know her and her family, even at this stage in our lives. We were able to spend a couple of days catching up and will probably spend whatever lifetime we have left continuing to learn about each other. I am glad we were able to decide on doing Ancestry.com instead of deciding that we were unrelated and 23 & Me had somehow incorrectly matched her daughter as close relative to my daughter. As for me, I will never use AnyLabTestNow.com again and if I am asked for a referral rest assured that name will never come up.
