How to change appearance RDR2 Online

One of the most requested features by Red Dead Online players was to be able to change appearance.  With the latest update to the game it is now possible to completely change your look in Red Dead Online.

To change character appearance in Red Dead Online you simply need to hit left on the d-pad to open the Free Roam menu.  After that you’ll want to select online options and then scroll down to appearance.  The first time you change your appearance will be free, but if you want to change again it will cost gold or cash.

Once you head back into the Appearance menus you will find that you have all of the customization options you had at the start of Red Dead Online, except for the ability to change sex of your character.  You can change things like your race, hair style, eye color, and many others to completely change the way you look in Red Dead Online.

Anytime you are in free roam you can access the menu by pressing left on the d-pad, scrolling down to online options, and then selecting Change Appearance.  This will move you into a new area of the game where you won’t be able to control your character, so make you do it somewhere safe like at your camp with the white flag raised.

How do you change your appearance in Red Dead Online? If you’re not feeling your current cowboy couture look, there's a whole host of character customisation tools in Rockstar's Western epic that can turn any baby-faced cowboy into a grizzly gunslinger in mere moments.

Long ago, in the dark days of a console-only Red Dead Redemption 2, you had to start an entirely new character to recreate your look, but Rockstar has since given players the ability to refresh their online avatar with various face and body options. Now you can change your appearance in RDR2 while keeping all of your progress and possessions, so here's how to do it.

RDR2: how to change your appearance

Before you launch into the character customisation menus, make sure you’re in a safe place—you don't want to be as unfortunate as Sacramento Stu (opens in new tab), trust me. This isn't because you’ll freak out those in the world around you with your gross morphing face, but because going into the character creator screen removes you from the session and forces you to abandon what you're currently doing. So find yourself a safe place; your camp is a great option.

Note: you can change your appearance for free, but only the first time. If you want to change again you’ll have to pay gold or real money out of your wallet, so make sure you're absolutely happy with your creation before finalising things.

To get to the character creator screen, open the Free Roam menu, scroll down to Online Options, and scroll down to Change Appearance. In this menu, you have lots of ways to change your look. There are sixteen different ways to change your character including skin tone, age, body build, eye colour, eyebrow shape, jawline, and a more.

Rockstar’s character editor has some pretty in-depth options, like changing your characters ‘lifestyle’: complexion, blemishes, scars, and freckles, in other words. I can’t imagine a cowboy’s diet to be the most nutritional so this is a great opportunity to give your gunslinger a ‘naturally' healthy glow.

You also have the option of changing your hairstyle and beard, but this is something that can also be changed outside of the character tool by going to see a barber. If you chose to be a female character you get the added bonus of makeup options. I totally recommend the winged eyeliner: it's classy but sassy.

If you're stuck with a disheveled madman as your Red Dead Online character - we've all been there - and are looking for a little bit of a change-up, then fret not because the cost isn't actually premium as you can pay to change your looks with readily available in-game currency.

In actuality, changing your appearance costs $400 - not just gold - but some are reporting that this feature was actually hidden for them when going to purchase the appearance change. Others claim the opposite, so it seems as though various players are drawing the short stick while others are plainly aware of the accessible pricing.

However, as Reddit user World_of-Warshipgirl points out, "The second most upvoted review on Steam claims [appearance changes] can only be bought with gold, so I imagine there's a lot of people unaware of this."

YSK: that you can pay dollars and not just gold to change your appearance. R* just hides it and you have to wait before it appears. from RedDeadOnline

The first appearance change is completely free, so if $400 is too steep and you have yet to alter your looks, then you are, funnily enough, in luck. Every time after that costs money but if it's your base appearance that isn't the problem but rather your hair, clothes, or whatever other on-top cosmetics, those can be changed at the likes of hairdressers and tailors at cheaper prices.

As for how you actually access the change appearance option, all you have to do is press left on the d-pad - or L on PC - to open the Free Roam menu. Here, go down to online options and then appearance. The only kicker is that you can't swap gender, so you're strapped to whatever it is you picked at the start in that regard. Everything else is readily available to be modified, though.

Someone stated, "I have changed my character like 20 times and every time I had the $ option," while another stated, "I have never seen the option to change my appearance with cash before," so perhaps it's a bug or perhaps it's a weird design choice. Whatever the case, you can modify your looks with cash instead of real-life money.
