How to delete a subreddit as a mod

Whatever your reasoning, if you’re looking to ‘delete’ a subreddit, then we’re here to help out as best as we can. Bad news first, though, there is no way to delete a subreddit.

Once a subreddit community has been created, it becomes a permanent feature of the Reddit site/app. It cannot be removed or deleted, not by its original creator or any number of its moderators. Unfortunately, this is just the way things are.

However, what you can do, is you can remove yourself (as mod or member) from an undesirable subreddit, and even block it (if you feel you need to go that far). Doing one or both of these things will effectively achieve the same thing that ‘deleting’ the subreddit would have. It will be removed from your communities list, your homepage, and (if you block it), you can guarantee that you’ll never see any content from it ever again.

Note: To block subreddits, you have to be a premium Reddit account holder, and must do so on a computer, not the mobile app. Once a premium member, to block content from a specific subreddit, just wait until it appears in your feed next, and hit the block button.

How to remove yourself as moderator from a subreddit (desktop)

1. Open up your preferred browser and navigate to the Reddit website, sign in if necessary
2. Navigate to your Profile by hitting your Profile icon and name in the top-right, and then from the drop-down menu, selecting ‘Profile’
   
   
   
   
   
3. Now, on the right hand of the page, scroll down until you locate the communities you moderate. Click on the one you wish to remove yourself from.
   
   
4. Once on the subreddit, click ‘Mod Tools’
   
   
5. From the left-hand sidebar, locate and click on ‘Moderators’ under ‘User Management’
   
   
6. Next, click the ‘Leave as mod’ button
   
   
7. Finally, when asked to confirm that you wish to leave as moderator, click ‘Leave’
   
   

How to remove yourself as a member from a subreddit (desktop)

1. Open up your preferred browser and navigate to the Reddit website, sign in if necessary
2. Using the search bar, navigate to the subreddit you wish to leave
   
   
3. At the top of the page, you’ll see a button reading ‘Joined’. Hover your cursor over this button and it will change to read ‘Leave’; click this.
   
   

How to remove yourself as moderator from a subreddit (mobile)

1. Open up the Reddit app and sign in if necessary
2. Next, tap the ‘Discovery’ icon along the bottom of the page (the one to the right of the ‘Home’ icon)
   
   
3. Scroll right down to the bottom until you reach the ‘Moderating’ section, and tap on the subreddit in that list from which you wish to remove yourself.
   
   
4. Once on the subreddit, tap ‘Mod Tools’
   
   
5. Scroll down, and under ‘User Management’ select ‘Moderators’
   
   
6. Next, tap ‘Editable’
   
   
7. Now tap the three vertical dots next to your name, and from the drop-down menu, select ‘Remove’
   
   
8. You’ll be asked to confirm your decision, to do so tap ‘Remove’ one last time
   
   

How to remove yourself as a member from a subreddit (mobile)

1. Open up the Reddit app and sign in if necessary
2. Next, tap the ‘Discovery’ icon along the bottom of the page (the one to the right of the ‘Home’ icon)
   
   
3. Scroll down until you locate the subreddit which you wish to remove yourself from, then tap on it
   
   
4. At the top of the subreddit, you’ll see a button saying ‘Joined’, simply tap this
   
   
5. You’ll be asked to confirm you wish to leave the subreddit, to confirm, tap ‘Leave’
   
   

And there you have it! Whilst it remains impossible to physically delete a subreddit, you can do the next best thing and remove yourself as both moderator and member from any subreddit you wish to.

Why would I want to delete a subreddit?

Reddit is one of the largest social networking platforms in the world and is visited by millions and millions of users every single day. Users can explore content through what is known as ‘subreddits’ – in other words, specific communities set up to host content and discussion about various niches. For example, you may visit the subreddit r/Nature to see pictures and videos and discuss various elements of the natural world.

As a Reddit user, you can also create subreddits, and act as their moderators (meaning that you get to decide who joins, who does not, what comments are acceptable, what rules apply to posting in the subreddit, etc.). As chance may have it, you might well accidentally create a subreddit, which you now wish to delete. 

Alternatively, maybe you just no longer want to be the moderator of a subreddit, or you’re simply a member of it and want to stop seeing it all the time. Whatever your reasoning, if you’re looking to delete a subreddit, we’ll help you as best as we can.

What happens when I delete a subreddit?

Well, technically… nothing. Unfortunately, there just isn’t a way of actually permanently deleting a subreddit. Once a community is created on Reddit, it’s there for good, and no matter what you do, you cannot delete it. 

Thankfully, you do still have options, and what we teach you how to do (above) will likely satisfy your desires, even if the subreddit remains in existence. What you can do instead of deleting a subreddit is simply removing yourself from it, and even blocking it, if you feel it necessary. 

Removing yourself as a moderator or member from the unwanted subreddit will remove this subreddit from your homepage and account, and blocking it will ensure you never see any more content from it, so long as you keep it blocked.

The subreddit itself, however, will remain in existence, still accessible to any and all members (old or new), and this fact, we’re afraid, you cannot change.

Can I rejoin a subreddit I’ve accidentally removed myself from?

This depends. If you simply removed yourself as a member from a subreddit, then sure! Just hop back onto that particular community’s page and press the ‘Join (+)’ button again. If it’s a public community, you’ll become a member again straight away. If it’s a private community, then you’ll have to wait until your ‘application’ is accepted. If it is an ‘invite only’ community, however, then your best course of action is to message one of the current moderators and ask to be invited.

However, if you’ve removed yourself as moderator from a subreddit, then rejoining it as moderator is a little more difficult. Again, though, the best route for you to take is to message another of the existing moderators and ask to be made a moderator again. Provided they’re happy to oblige, the process of rejoining should not prove too difficult.
