How to get out of orthographic View in Blender

$\begingroup$

I'm working on a scene that, currently, is much more convenient when the view is.. not the correct perspective.

There's a word for this, but I have no idea how to phrase it and my tries to look it up has all come up with weird results. (usually directions on how to make your view point from a certain direction)

This has probably already been answered here, so please bear with me; I just cannot find anything that has to do with the problem I'm having.

I drew a photo to make it easy: (excuse my crappy mouse-drawing skills)

If this is what you're asking, you can switch from User Perspective to Orthographic by using the Numpad 5 key. The perspective type is given in the upper left hand corner of the 3D view.

The differences can be found here: What are the differences between Orthographic and Perspective views?

Essentially, Orthographic is a "non-real-world" view in which all dimensions have the same scale... i.e. objects that are farther away appear to be the same size as objects that are near-field.

If you're looking to render in orthographic mode, you can just switch the camera from perspective projection to orthographic (a type of parallel projection) in the camera properties, under "Lens". Note that you'll probably need to reposition your camera afterward, as it will have changed your frustum.

If you only want to temporarily preview the scene that way, use numpad-5 as @bertmoog said.

In the new Blender 2.80 in the “3D View” window (3D Viewport), when scrolling a wheel to zoom or pressing the num pad buttons (1, 3, 7, 9) to center the view to different sides, the projection mode automatically changes between orthographic and perspective.

To disable this automatic mode changing, in the “User Preferences” window – “Navigation”, change the value of the Auto Perspective checkbox:

Here we start to take a look at the viewport and navigation in 3D space. It may be a bit different from other softwares in the 3D industry, however when you get a feel for how blenders navigation works you will fly through the viewport. Watch this video to get a head start or read on below. Perhaps both.

The previous part about editos and interface guided us through a common beginner misstake that usually ends up in a very messy interface. So make sure to watch that if you haven't.

How to navigate. Rotate, pan, zoom & reset the view

The 3D viewport is the name of the largest editor, that happens to represent the 3D world. To navigate around the 3D viewport, use the middle mouse button. Click and hold to rotate the view.

To zoom the view ether, scroll the wheel on your mouse or hold control while pressing down the middle mouse button.

For panning the view, hold shift, click and hold the middle mouse button.

The 3D view supports both perspective view and orthographic view. In perspective view we view the 3D world as we normally do with perspective. The opposite of that is orthographic view. It lacks perspective and looks more like a blueprint view. Orthographic view is most useful when viewing an object from a head on angle. For instance, precisely from the top, left or bottom view.

To view the object in any of these modes use the number pad. Press 1 for front orthographic view. 3 for right view and 7 for top view. Hold ctrl while pressing 1, 3 or 7 for back, left and bottom view.

When going into any of these views Blender will toggle orthographic view automatically. To manually toggle between perspective and orthographic view press numpad 5. This was very common in older versions of Blender but in 2.8 we don’t need to worry so much about it since we get the automatic toggle while using 1,3 and 7 now.

A new feature in Blender 2.8 is that you can toggle between the top front right view etc., just by holding alt, middle mouse button and drag left, right, up or down to move between the orthographic head on views.

How do I exit orthographic view in Blender?

When you press the Ctrl key, the Alt key, and the Q key, Blender toggles the Quad view on and off. The Quad view gives you three Orthographic views and the Camera view, while the Ortho views do not change. When you press the 5 key on the NumPad, the camera window does toggle between the Ortho and Persp views.

How do you switch from camera to orthographic view in Blender?

If you need to create an orthographic rendering, select the camera, go to the Camera tab and press the Orthographic button in the Lens panel.

How do you change the view in Blender?

To change the viewing angle in discrete steps, use Numpad8 and Numpad2 or use Numpad4 and Numpad6 to rotate the scene around the global Z axis from your current point of view. Finally Numpad9 switches to the opposite side of the view.

Which NumPad key is used to toggle between perspective and ortho mode?

NUM5 — toggle between perspective and orthographic views.
