How to make a private TF2 server with friends

How do I host a private server to play with friends.

The question is in the title. I need to know how to host a server on a map that I downloaded or whatever to play with my friends. Like if we wanted to play on Upward on tf2, then it would just be us or whoever we invite to the game. Is there any commands into the console that I have to type or anything?

You could pay a company to host it for you, thats the easiest way if you want it up constantly and dont want to fiddle with options.

The alternative is to host it yourself on a computer you own: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_Dedicated_Server

There might be good guides for this in the tf2 hub somewhere.

I was wondering to host i on a computer, I tried looking it up but when I invited my friends, they couldn't join. I thought there was some commands or whatever to let me host a server to let them join. I tried the "+" button where the add a server button is but that doesn't work either.

How to make a private TF2 server with friends

My friend just got a PC and wanted to play with me, but they want to mess around in a private match before trying anything else. I've created my own server from the "Create your own Server" option in the menu, but I can't invite them at all.

How can I invite them or how can they join me?

How to make a private TF2 server with friends

level 1

Create server is a LAN server. Go find an empty community server and play there

level 1

The create server option is basically useless (unless you want to play with bots.) try creating your own server, (difficult, but plausible.) use Duel.tf if you want to do a 1v1 with them, or just find an already established online server.

level 2

how do you do the difficult but plausible version of creating your own server?

level 1

The create your own server optoon cannot be used with another player, only you and any bots you add. Your best bet is to go search for an empty community server and play with them there if you wanna be alone.

The TF2 wiki has a page that lists the commands, AI and supported maps that bots can be used on. You do not need cheats to be on to use this type of bot. But puppet bots do.

So you start the server, join a team, say RED. Then type into the console tf_bot_add blue

Your friend joins and selects team RED too. Then type tf_bot_add 13

You will then have 8 people on both teams.

If you wish to change the difficulty of the bots, before adding the first bot, type tf_bot_difficulty.

Followed by the difficulty as a number: 0 = easy, 3 = expert, default 1 = normal.

I don't wanna have to do anything to my PC or buy anything.

I remember in another game being able to make a private match without needing to worry about the above or randoms joining. is it possible in TF2?

Yep.

To do it, click the "+" button next to "Choose Server" and have the server require a password.
Now, just give the people you want in the match the password and the name of the server and you're all set.

not surprised since it's you posting but tf2 listen servers aren't that simple.

they're not even online by default since it's set to sv_lan 1.

also listen servers suck in general

After about an hour and a half of messing around in the command console and trying to follow guides to set up a simple two-player server for me to show a friend the basics of the game, I gave up.

Short answer, kind of - you can't set up a 'private match' without quite a bit of effort and knowledge.

I find it easiest to do by using a virtual LAN program like Hamachi or Evolve. Set up the server, have everyone in the group, then type "Connect *the VPN IP*" and it should work.

If you just want to reserve a server and make it invite only for a bit, use this website. You can reserve them for up to 3 hours (it might just be 2) and password lock them. If you want to host a server yourself, you will have to alter things on your computer (but I don't know enough about that to describe it to you).

OBJECTION!

When playing on the server, go into your console (using the ~ button, next to "1" on your keyboard, after enabling the console in your options -> advanced). In the console, type "status". This will give you some information about the server and players on it. The server IP is in the line udp/ip.
