How to place chests side by side without connecting bedrock

If you place chests next to each other by clicking on a block other than the chest itself, then it will only connect if the chests are facing the same direction. Otherwise you will get two single chests. If you crouch while placing the second half, then it won't connect even if they're facing the same way. And if you crouch and click on a single chest to place another chest, they will always connect regardless of direction.

Say I want to place chests in an unbroken chain, but I don't want to do it with trapped chests because it might screw with my redstone.

Shouldn't I just be able to place regular small chests one after the other without them connecting, and to do so I hold shift?

Not very useful, but something does not have to be useful to be a good feature.
This is in my opinion, a good feature.

No support, things like this would become a pain in the butt to make, you need shift click to place chests on top of chests or next to them. Deal with having trapped chests

Not entirely. While I don't expect my solution to be the ultimate solution you can place a block next to whatever it is you're placing and place it there and remove that block. This is how placing blocks, torches, etc. on things like crafting tables and furnaces used to be done.

That just awkward, and it would make chest placing a pain in the but, again when im working a large project I like to slot chest together like that for easy access, having to build another block to build the chest onto would just be a hassle when cramming lots of chests together. So once again, no support.

How about this alternative: Change chest behavior so that chests by default do NOT connect. Then shift-right-click with one chest in-hand against the side of another (single) chest would unite them into a double chest. Existing single and double chests would be unaffected.

The reason I suggest doing it this way is that it would eliminate a complex program for figuring out chest connections and leave a dirt-simple one in its place. All single & double chest arrangements would be left to players to sort out.

Of course what I'm suggesting isn't a mod but a Mojang revision... somebody tell the Minecraft Gods, and if they need help, I've seen the code, know how I'd do it, and I'm looking for work

I agree that there should be a way to place chests that do not connect.

    +1

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).

  • #14 Jun 29, 2014

I support this, but it may be a bit complicated to implement. If placing a chest on top of a hopper, furnace, etc., you have to shift click anyway. Possibly this could be done by shift clicking on the chest next to the one you're hoping to keep separated.

A possible work-around to the addressed issue may be solved by using trapped chests if not using redstone.

Well, This creates an issue if there is any redstone nearby. It's a workaround, but an iffy one at that.

I am thoroughly confused by people saying this would be hard to implement or confusing to use. All the code for this is already in the game. Using shift click to alternate how a block is placed? In for placing things on interactable blocks. Chests changing joined/single state based on user input? Yep. The only thing it needs is a tag that forces it not to change that state, which is a simple IF statement.

As for using it, how is that confusing? It behaves EXACTLY how it currently does if you don't use this, and if you do use this the only difference is if you want a single chest you shift right click instead of right click. That is the ONLY difference.

All of that aside, I doubt this will be implemented. Suggestions like this have come before, the Trapped Chest was their way of implementing it.

No, what if I need to place a chest off of a chest? shift clicking won't link them. Refer to my photo

I, personally, would love this addition. If you are making a storage room and you don't want to use double chests (to have more chests of different categories), this would be perfect. Instead of having to have a block of space between two chests, you would just be able to put them next to each other, saving a lot of space.

I can see the issue there. Besides my personal opinion that having anything besides an air block above a Chest should prevent it from opening (something that the bug tracker mods seem to disagree with, although I personally believe a member of Mojang should have to be the one who labels a possible bug "works as intended"), this is an easy fix. You just have a slightly more complex IF statement:

IF the block is placed with shift + right click off the side of a single or double chest, it is placed as a single chest.
IF the block is placed with shift + right click above a block, it places it but still tries to link to an adjacent chest (unless it is surrounded by double chests or chests that have been forced to remain single chests, in which place it is placed as a single chest)
IF the block is placed with or without shift + right click in any other fashion, it is a normal chest.

That should resolve any and all conflicts. I even have an alternative based on what Jeffryfisher said (which I prefer to the OP, as it fixes every issue with this idea and would make chests easier to manage and place in a condensed manner). This would actually be easier, because it becomes:

IF the block is placed off the side of a single Chest with shift + right click, they become a double chest.
IF anything else it is a single chest.

Of course, this is still never going to happen because Mojang had the opportunity to do it years ago and instead we got Trapped Chests.

It would still make things a pain but I guess it would work that way. They might as well make a different chest type that is like the trapped chest except it doesn't interact with redstone.

How do you stop two chests from connecting to bedrock?

When placing small chests side by side, allow "sneak" to prevent the new small chest from merging with an existing one on either side.

Can you stack chests in Minecraft bedrock?

Because chests themselves are functionally transparent, two chests can be stacked on top of one another while still allowing the lower chest to be opened.
