Baa, Baa, Black Sheep“, just like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star“, is a variant of the French melody “Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman“. This lovely nursery rhyme and its numerous variations have been sung across Great Britain and North America. It is on the number 4439 in the Roud Folk Song Index.

The rhyme is known from the first half of the 18th century. One of the theories about the explanation of its meaning is political and related with the medieval taxes on wool and the slave trade.
