What is the point of a puzzle mat?

So I love doing puzzles but don't have a lot of space in my tiny condo and I'm looking for suggestions on how to store my puzzle. my girlfriend uses our table as her desk while shes in school and I don't have any tables big enough. I can start it on my floor in the middle of my living room but have no where to put it when im not doing it.

Has anyone ever used a puzzle roll up mat? I've seen them online but I'm not sure they actually work. Any suggestions??

They work okay, in my experience. Would it be possible to get some sort of large piece of cardboard or poster board and simply slip in under a table or bed? You would not want to leave too many loose pieces around the edges in this case, though.

I'm currently using http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=puzzle+caddy and I love it. I wouldn't try to assemble anything larger than 18x24" on it though.

I will be upgrading to a larger one when the one I have my eye on is back in stock. I haven't tried the rollup ones personally, but I haven't heard good things about them. The caddy I linked above needs to be stored flat, but will easily slide under a bed or couch.

They are okay if you really have no space. The only thing that really bothers be about them is that sometimes when I unroll a puzzle, pieces come loose and I have to spend a couple of minutes fixing it up.

I use a large cork board. The pieces don't slip, and it's light enough that I have it on my lap when I'm sitting in the recliner. You'll need to store it horizontally, but you'll have a sturdy surface and your pieces won't move

This is the one I have, and I loved it so much I bought one for my mother too. It's a bit pricey, but so worth it to easily have my dining room table back whenever I'm having company.

How to use

The puzzle roll up mat is simple and easy to use. Start by piecing together your puzzle on top of the mat. When you can’t finish it for the time being, gently roll up the mat with the puzzle sitting safely inside. Use the two strips of Velcro to fasten the rolled up mat and store it away. Once you have the time to finish it off, undo the Velcro and slowly unroll the mat to reveal the puzzle intact and you can start where you left off!
