How to setup a joystick for il-2

This ID "ping-pong" is Window "prank".

And the attempt to solve this changing joystick name from

Joy1, Joy2 ...to  (example) "_VKB-Sim_Gladiator_-B56E1E95"

don't solve the issue,  just make things more complicated, e.g. for replace names with Notepad, avoiding map all again.

Great Battles will do the same thing if you are running TARGET for your Thrust Master controllers.  You have to start Target before you start the game or the game will see new controllers instead of the "Combined" controllers.  Mine are as seen below in configId,quid, model below.  When I notice things get amiss ( when I go to settings and Joy 1, 2, 3 have changed) I check that folder in the game install and it has changed, so I delete everything in the "Data/Input/devices.txt" file and turn on TARGET, and start the game and it generates a new "devices.txt" profile inside the Input folder.  And as for switching USB plugs in the motherboard, it will mess things up.  I just move my set up into my new game room, and I have each of my USB plugs labeled as to which plug they go in and it still messed up.  Windows updates, game updates, updating controller firmware will all play havoc on the system sometimes.  So when I set up my Yaw/L&R Toe Brakes I should see Joy 0 x axis', for those three, and Joy 1 x/y axis for Pitch/Roll and Joy 3 x axis for Throttle axis.  If anything else shows up while assigning axis your Input/device file is messed up.  Delete it, and restart the game, set your axis again and you should be doin barrel rolls in no time.

C'est la vie with IL2...................

Basic joystick configuration?

Hello pilots

I just bought this game, and a Logitech G Extreme 3D Pro Joystick.
I am kinda overwhelmed with all the different keys and buttons to configure, so I am asking, what are the most basic keys I need to configure on my joystick?

So far I have set the throttle, so I can increase/decrease that. I have 2 buttons assigned to flaps.
And of course one to drop bombs, and one to fire the planes cannons and machineguns.

I have my joystick to the far right, my mouse in the middle (For free-looking around) and my keyboard up vertical to my computer.

Also, why can I not access the American fighter planes? I only get the choice between Russian & German. I want my P-40 :)

Thank you

From memory the basic flight controls I used when I had that stick.
On the stick axis - Pitch, Roll, Yaw, Throttle (on the little tab thing).
As primary buttons on the stick - Trigger = mg, Thumb button = cannon, Top of stick = bombs and rockets.
8 way switch as PoV hat if no view control.
On the Base - Flaps, Rads

It has been a long time since I used that stick so I don't remember all of the binds but it might work as a starting point for you.

Your basic controls are:
Pitch
Roll
Yaw
Throttle
RPM / Prop Pitch
Radiators (Water and Oil)
Flaps
Landing Gear
Wheel Brakes
Trim (Pitch, Roll, Yaw)
Weapons
View Control (Pitch, Roll,Yaw, Zoom)

I would first bind the contols that need quick access for flight and combat, then for convenience whatever keys are still unused to controls that have inconvenient binds.

I usually use the quick missions to test after changing things. If vital controls get forgotten it usually shows quickly.

Hope this helps.

This is similar to what I used when starting out, but in hindsight, there were some less obvious controls that are really important:

  • You should reserve a PTT button for use with SRS, Discord, Teamspeak, etc, though you don't bind it in game.

  • If you're using headtracking, you'll need a HOTAS button to recenter it.

  • Zoom is really, really important and needs to be on your HOTAS.

  • Trim is also really important and needs to be on the HOTAS, at least for elevator. Plus, the funky German stabilizer adjustment deserves comment.

  • Map is pretty important too, although I don't bother fitting that to the HOTAS.

Can you play IL

Overall, you technically can play IL-2 with just the keyboard and mouse, but it is strongly recommended to play with a joystick.

Can you use an Xbox controller for IL

I have recently spent some time with JoyToKey mapping tool and found out that you can do awesome things for IL-2 with an xbox one or any other controller that doesn't have many buttons.

How do I add IL

To create IL-2 account if you don't have one already, please choose the first option 'Create IL-2 account and link it with Steam'. After clicking it, a warning will appear describing that the game will be closed and the registration process will start in your Internet browser. Click the green button to start.
