How to tame a bunny in minecraft

Rabbits are a passive mob in Minecraft, and will never attack the player. They where added to the game way back in 2014, during the 1.8 Update.

In this guide, we’re going to show you everything you need to know about Rabbits in Minecraft. That includes how to find them, breed them, tame them, what they drop and more. 

We created this guide during Minecraft 1.16, so there’s no guarantee that the Rabbits mechanics could be a little different in the future. We’ve covered many more Minecraft Guides here at PwrDown, as well as some for other types of animals and mobsthat you can find in-game.

Where to Find Rabbits

Rabbits can be found in many different Minecraft Biomes. These include Deserts, Flower Forests, Taigas, Giant Tree Taigas, Snowy Taigas, Snowy Tundras, Snowy Beaches and Frozen Rivers.

There are a few different variations of Rabbits (six in total) available, with each one having a different fur color. The color of the fur is determined by the biome in which the Rabbit has spawned.

For example, Rabbits which spawn in Deserts will typically have a golden coat, blending in with the surroundings. While Rabbits which spawn in Snowy biomes will be white, and also difficult to spot.

When Rabbits spawn, they are typically in small groups of 1-3 Rabbits. There will always be at least one adult, then up to 2 kits (baby bunnies). 

Rabbit Drops

Rabbits are often hunted for their drops, which include Rabbit’s Foot, Rabbit Hide and Raw Rabbit. They’ll also drop small amounts of experience, like other Minecraft mobs.

Obtaining Rabbit Hide is very useful, as it can be crafted into Leather. Every 4 Rabbit Hide placed into a Crafting Table will return the player with a single piece of Leather. Villagers might also buy the Hide for Emeralds.

Likewise, Rabbit’s Foot is used as a Potion ingredient. It’s a key ingredient when it comes to crafting both Mundane Potions and Potions of Leaping inside of a Brewing Stand. Again, Villagers will also buy Rabbit’s Food as part of their trades.

Taming Rabbits

Unlike other passive Minecraft mobs, Rabbits sadly can’t be tamed. That doesn’t mean you can’t own some though, as you can transport them to your base by using a Lead. You can also use Carrots to make the Rabbits follow you, although they might lose interest occasionally and run away.

Once you have a Rabbit, you can place it inside a fenced enclosure to stop it leaving your base. From there, you can breed them, build a Rabbit farm and more.

How to Breed Rabbits

Rabbits can easily be bred by using either Carrots, Golden Carrots or Dandelions in Minecraft. Simply have two Rabbits nearby, and use one of the above items on each of them. Then, a baby Rabbit (kit/bunny) will be born.

In most cases, a Baby Rabbit will inherit the same fur type of its parents, with each parent having a 47.5% chance. That leaves a 5% chance for the baby to inherit the fur of the biome that it was born in.

Baby Rabbits will take 20 real-life minutes in order to become an adult Rabbit. You can feed them Carrots to increase the growth time by 10% for each time it’s fed. 

Special Rabbits

There are two types of special Rabbits available in Minecraft which don’t spawn naturally in the game world.

Killer Bunny

The Killer Bunny is a Rabbit in Minecraft that can only be spawned in with commands, and is only accessible to Java Edition. It’s much faster than normal Rabbits, and will attack the player if they are within a 16 block radius.

A Killer Bunny can be spawned by using the command: /summon rabbit ~ ~ ~ {RabbitType:99}

Toast

If you apply a name tag to a Rabbit with the name ‘Toast’, it will have a new unique skin which takes the appearance of a Black Dutch Rabbit. It behaves the exact same way as a normal Rabbit does.

What’s so interesting about the Toast Bunny is that it was named after a fans Rabbit who went missing in real life. The change/feature was implemented as a memorial.
