How to turn off glowing effect in Minecraft

  1. So this suggestion is pretty straight forward. If this were implimented it would give the player the ability to toggle wether or not they can see the glow effect. It might be a command like /glow toggle. If the player had /glow toggle off, then when other players were using the glow effect it would not appear to them. This would be helpful because I know from personal experience that seeing someone with the glow effect will bring down some players' fps drastically.

  2. this is a really good idea!!!

  3. I do agree that this would be a good idea; however this can be solved by doing the following:
1: Change your MC version to something below 1.9. The effect
2: Haven’t actually tested this, and I don’t know if it’ll actually work, but I think if you turn off your particles you won’t see the glowing effect.

The reason why I don’t this is a good idea:
1: I don’t think it’s possible. The glowing effect uses potion effects; and it’s not like you can just turn off the effects for some players, and leave them on for others.

Other than that, I really like your creativity with this; but I’m going to have to give a -1 to this suggestion.

  4. I mean, if it's possible to implement, then this is a great idea. There really isn't a way that comes to my mind instantly that disables the glow effect. I was able to check if you can disable glow effect by turning off particles and unfortunately, you are unable to. I know there is also the option for one to change their version to anything below 1.9, but there is a lot of stuff people love in the versions released beyond that version. +1

  5. I agree with @fortryde, if you don’t want to be able to see the effect just lower your version. I don’t think this is really necessary but if there is more reasons it should be implemented then I’ll reconsider. For now I’ll be voting a -1.

    • I will be agreeing with @fortryde and @llatekate with this. You can just choose a version lower than 1.9 if it bothers you that much. I think it isn't necessary. I will be voting a -1 at the moment, but my change my opinion once I hear more on this.

      • But then you wont have the new blocks. Someone might want to use 1.12 but the glowing effect is lowing there frames, and wouldnt the blocks look weird if you tried to rp in a lower version?

      • Voting yes, I like this idea in terms of usefulness, etc.
It makes a lot of sense.

      • I am staying neutral until I see more of an argument from each side. I do however have a question for the don’t implement side of the opinion. Although you can switch to a lower version, Creative makes it so it’s the best in 1.12 and you wouldn’t get all the fun blocks, entities, etc. because you switch to a different version. I think it would be easier to make this command so you can enjoy the server at it’s best state and also not have to see the glow if you don’t want to, but again I am staying neutral until I see more of a valid reason for either side.

      • Switching versions seems like a very bad way to have a problem go away. I also was under the impression that doing /glow turns it off if its on and turns it on if its off. But i may be wrong.

The glow effect is insane for its ability to drop a player's FPS in the toilet. Normally I get 40 FPS, but when something has a glow effect on that FPS drops to 18! This allows for huge amounts of abuse (namely, players in a team shooting each other with spectral arrows to lag out the opposition, or even shooting themselves). There needs to be an option to either disable this effect or make it less of an FPS killer.

What type of computer do you have, and what version do you have? You shouldn't be able to lag this much with one little potion effect.

No, I mean an option so that the glow effect does not show up. Seriously, my game runs perfectly fine until someone uses that effect and then I die because my FPS went down the toilet. Gets stupid after the fifth time you lose because of a negative potion effect on your opponent.

I.... Actually experience this as well. You know, not EVERYONE has a new shiny computer. We're not all rich to where we can just "buy a new one". I think what the op is getting at is something like the particles effect option to disable it, or reduce it. (the particles, not the effect) so i actually support this.

I have a 2009 OSX computer. It doesn't damage lag on it.

I'd agree with reducing the effect, but right now, it outright removes it, giving players with it on an advantage over their opponent.

Think of it like the particles settings we have currently in game. Turning them off improves your fps, but you wont be able to see the particles for things like the lingering potions area of affect cloud or barriers. Yes this will provide a slight dis advantage, but its an option to turn it off or not. And it only affects what you see. Of course it will give you a disadvantage, but only at your choice. And it isnt all bad, its there for those who really need it. Disabling it will spare your fps, ehich having really really low fps is more of a disadvantage than not being able to see people through walls.

@genlem (no double quotes on mobile) the fps drop may be graphics card dependent, even so, you might not experience the drop, but clearly others are. Im sure others are effected by it also. I dont see how adding in a little support for those who csnt handle thr potion effect will hurt especially since those who can will not be effected in any way.

You don't always need a new PC just to endure something in a game. I don't want to just spout "no support >=(" because I've had bad computers and had miniscule, senseless things lag games for hardly any reason and just ruin my chances of winning.

I think it's goofy for the entire point of a potion to be made optional. I'm game for ways of reduce performance on that effect, just not that way. Maybe it have it tied to existing graphics settings or something.

        Mild support.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.

I never stated that. I'm fully aware you don't always need a new pc. Though it just tends to be the thing thrown out the most. "Just buy a new pc if you can't handle ______" not saying anyone here has said it, but I have seen people use that phrase often.

There needs to be an option to either disable this effect or make it less of an FPS killer.

If the effect you're describing is the box being drawn around whatever the arrow hit, that's merely just a few more OGL calls telling it to draw some lines within 3D space, nothing even low-end computers will sweat at (a $250 laptop made 3 years ago should be able to run this, this is literally one of the easiest things a computer can do in terms of graphics). Unless you have a super old PC (I'm talking in excess of 5 years), a PC with a super old or a SUPER underpowered graphics card, or your PC just has poor graphics potential for some reason (shoddy drivers, overheating, CPU / GPU bottlenecks, etc), it should be able to perform this effect. If you do have an old or underpowered PC (and when I say underpowered, I mean can barely even idle smoothly underpowered), it unfortunately is time to upgrade.

If your PC isn't horrible, instead it could be an optimisation issue that your system is experiencing, in which case I'd recommend that you instead take this issue to Mojang and file it under a bug report, and include any and all information on your system.

However, your suggestion may temporarily "fix" the problem, but, as I said, if you're having problems running this new effect, you're going to have problems running any other "advanced" effects Mojang wants to implement, in which they want to. Purely for that reason, partial support.

Don't complain because your computer is old. The inevitable moment where you have to upgrade to keep up with gaming has come upon you. There are many, many cheaper alternatives to spending a grand + on a super computer. Haswell i3's seem like the way to go nowadays.

That being said, Minecraft could use a little more optimization to give those who need to upgrade, time to do so.

        Partial support.

The thing is if you just turn it off on your side you just won't be able to see it which is a disadvantage. Other people which may have better computer can still see it but you can't. I don't see the problem in it.

Yeah but the effects can translate to different computers. I personally have a i3 (My core processor) And Intel HD Graphics that are old. I get 50 -> 200 fps normally. But when the effect is applied to a opponent my fps turns into seconds per frame

As long as this thread is being resuscitated…

This highlights the need for a general overhaul with a strong bias toward improving performance.

Note that even in 2015 (when the OP was made) there existed a PvP exploit based on inducing lag to selectively disadvantage players with less up-to date computers.

Were equality-of-opportunity in PvP to be pursued to the utmost, it wold seem to be necessary to 'read' all invloved [probably meaning proximate] players' FPS rates and constrain all client preformance to the lowest performing system. [Ugh, & double UGH!]

DO NOT PM me, I am currently locked out of the PM system.

Instead of no glow effect what about lowering the effect. Since the effect outlines the player what if it was only outlining heads. Or maybe a bit less resource intensive way to make the effect work. I wouldn't care what the effect looks like personally but I care if it was at least visible and less resource intensive
