Huel hot and savory review reddit

I’ve been using meal replacement products on and off since Soylent was introduced. I’ve tried a lot of different products and even got into DIY for awhile, making my own versions of People Chow and Super Body Fuel. I tried Huel about a year ago and liked it enough to make it my main powder although I still enjoy Soylent RTD on the go. I’ve had the chance to go through at least one bag of each flavor so I thought I would post my thoughts.

TLDR Overall, I think Huel has a real winner with Hot and Savory. It’s super convenient and it’s easy to add things to certain flavors to add calories or change to taste. It also has that stick to the gut quality and is surprisingly satisfying. I think it’s a little expensive for what it is, but seems to be in line with industry pricing. Let’s get into individual flavor impressions.

Tomato & Herb This was the first flavor I tried and was my initial favorite. It’s a great base tomato flavor and not that spicy. This is also the most flexible flavor to add things to. I’ve added Ritz crackers, Jalapeño Cheetos, cheese and hot sauce. Some folks here have added eggs for a nice breakfast and I’m looking forward to trying that when I get another bag in. This is a very solid offering and I’ll be buying it in the future. Grade - B

Thai Green Curry I wasn’t impressed initially, but it’s become my favorite flavor. Once you get the right consistency this flavor is where it’s at. It’s not very spicy and I find it a little bland until you give it some kick. I add my favorite habanero hot sauce and then it’s delicious. I can’t really imagine what would go well as and add in other than maybe ramen noodles, but have not tried that yet as it kind of defeats the purpose of quick and easy. If anyone has any ideas I’d love to hear them. Grade - A

Mexican Chilli I was so excited when they launched this flavor I immediately ordered three bags and ended up regretting it. The Mexican spice they use is not to my liking. There is also a sour or acrid underlying flavor competing against the spice. The texture on this flavor is fantastic though. I’ll finish the bags I ordered, but probably won’t be ordering again. Adding some hot sauce and some cheese makes this a lot better for me. Grade - C

Overall, I think Hot and Savory is a great product and I’ll be continuing to buy it. I’’m looking forward to new flavors and experimenting with adding stuff to the existing ones. I’m genuinely surprised how satisfying it is. It has a a real stick to the gut quality and makes a fantastic lunch or dinner. Adding a little something something is a great way to add calories to a meal when needed. It’s a little bit expensive for what it its, but that seems to be the norm in the industry. Maybe I’m just cheap. I buy recently expired Huel Vanilla on eBay for half price.

Tips Experiment with consistency. It makes all the difference. Make sure to mix the bags properly before each meal. Otherwise you’ll end up with flavor powder condensed in your final meal which is not very pleasant. This goes mainly for Tomato and Herb and Mexican Chilli. I also like to let it sit for 3-5 minutes after it comes out of the microwave. The Huel Hot and Savory Cup is not best quality and retains flavors, but it is super convenient. I’m searching for a good replacement.

Rant I very much dislike the subscription shakedown to get the best price. Yes, they all do it but I still find it pretty shady. I want to buy a product, not get in a relationship. I feel no guilt turning it off after each purchase.
