Description:

This heart-wrenching drama about two university students and their growing disillusionment–from Yoru Sumino, the author of I Want to Eat Your Pancreas and the Eisner-nominated I Had That Same Dream Again–was adapted into a live-action film in Japan.

Two young people in their first year of university, drawn to each other’s passion, establish a secret society to pursue those ideals. But as time passes, the demands of a world that isn’t kind to dreamers threatens to force them apart, filling the space between them with shattered hopes and the fallout of lies. A tender, tragic tale about growing past pain and the cruelty of youth, by acclaimed author Yoru Sumino.

Can you articulate on why you thought it was good? I personally didn't find it any good at all.

The foreshadowing was very obvious from the start that she wasn't dead and the "cathartic" confrontation at the end was anything but. Rather, it was simply inconsequential seeing as how the main character didn't get the outcome he was expecting after irreparably damaging his relationships, old and new. I failed to see the point of the novel; he made this grand plan out of pettiness, that had no payout. Fast forward to the future, and he talks like he had a fulfilling youth like his experience changed him for the better.

Also I didn't like Moai at all. It was never really fleshed out and it served as a "concept" rather than something of actual substance.

It’s neither sad nor comedic. It’s a revenge story which I’d describe it as a psychological drama. Like a dumb down college version of COTE but without waifus. 😂

Having said that, it could get very emotional here and there, but not exactly from sadness or depression. Mostly anger, frustration, and despair.

I wrote something on another thread.

It’s a great read to me. Quite a unusual novel by Sumino Yoru that isn’t fully SoL but a fast-paced psychological.

Yeah, I heard there's little romance and a lot of suffering instead.

They're all about some form of suffering. I suspect Yoru writes these books as personal catharsis.

Nope but I heard it's more of psychological than romance
