I Am The Sorcerer King is a Korean light novel series written by Decaspell, and is being adapted by the artist, Miro, into a webtoon manhwa. The series is primarily a real world action-fantasy adventure.

For the past 10 years, Earth has been under attack from a monster horde that appeared out of a rift formed through time and space. Ever since the event, people have started to awaken supernatural RPG-like powers, and began to hunt the monsters for fame and money. The protagonist, Lee Sunghoon, lives in South Korea in need of money to buy the cure for his mother's sickness. He remains powerless, but is athletic enough to take on dangerous jobs as a baiter who lures monsters for his hunting party to kill.

One day, Sunghoon is suddenly caught off-guard by a monster attack that results in his death, but during that moment, he remembers his past life as the Sorcerer King, Kuratauras, who died in a foreign world facing off against the great Black Dragon, Akaluman. It was during Kuratauras' final moments that he revealed to have activated a final trump card to reincarnate some time in the future in order to one day face off against the Black Dragon again. Sunghoon's dying moment causes the reincarnation to finally activate; resulting in his injuries healing, and him gaining all of Kuratauras' memories. This includes all the knowledge for Sunghoon to finally begin awakening his powers as a great sorcerer. From here on out, Sunghoon begins his overpowered magic show.

• The Archmage: Sunghoon's past incarnation, Kuratauras, was this and one of Sunghoon's current goals is to become one once again, but in the present time.
• An Adventurer Is You: After the rift opened that brought monsters to Earth, humans started to become awakened with supernatural powers in order to fight back. Becoming awakened turns them into players as if they're role-playing characters in a video-game.
• The Bait: Humanity's hunting parties will sometimes have someone acting as the bait to lure out a monster for the party to kill in a much more safer location. The main character, Sunghoon, performs this role at the start of the story as his job to make money before having his Kuratauras memories restored.
• Blade on a Stick: Awakened humans could take on the role of a spear wielder.
• The Bully: Sunghoon's first hunting party had a couple of these.
• The Chosen Many: Humans that are chosen by the unknown god to become Awakened with RPG-like abilities are actually not that many compared to the vast populatons. South Korea is said to have only around 50,000 Awakened amongst its entire population.
• Cleanup Crew: Following battles against monsters, a crew usually comes in to clean-up and check on the worth of the monster corpse so that the hunters receive their pay.
• Damager, Healer, Tank: Given that awakened humans basically turn into video-game role-playing characters, people taking on the Tank, Damage or Healing role within their hunting parties is the standard.
• Draw Aggro: Tanks tend to have aggro skills to bring the monster's attention towards them.
• Encounter Bait: Those who work as baiters for hunting parties have Monster Attraction Spray sprayed upon them in order to attract nearby monsters towards them, and lure them back for the hunting party to kill.
• Fighter, Mage, Thief: Within hunting parties, the ones who perform the damage-dealing role are usually this. Sunghoon himself eventually becomes a powerful damage-dealing mage.
  • In Sunghoon's original hunting party, Changsik was basically a warrior that dealt damage with a giant sword. The party also included two unnamed damage dealers; a fire-mage and a spear-user.
• Guns Are Worthless: Somewhat averted as humanity is still able to use normal world technology, such as guns, to fight back against the monsters. However, it's made pretty clear that people using their awakened supernatural powers have more of an effect against the monsters.
• The Leader: Humanity's hunting parties usually have someone designated as this.
• Magical Incantation: Some of Sunghoon's spells start with the phrase:

  Sunghoon: I command thee as the Minister of Magic...

• Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Happened before the start of the series. Life on Earth was going on normally until 10 years ago when a rift opens through time and space. A monster horde comes through the rift, which results in a lot of death and destruction. Humans then become "Awakened" gaining RPG-like powers in order to fight back against the monsters. Thus, creating a current world on Earth where humans hunt monsters as if they're video-game characters.
• Our Monsters Are Different: For 10 years, a variety of monsters have been living on Earth after a horde of them appeared through a rift and invaded the planet. The current day has humanity fighting back against the monsters.
• The Plague: The illness known as the Rapid Unconsciousness State was brought to Earth as a symptom of the rift that brought monsters to Earth 10 years ago. Many people ended up in a forever unconscious state unless a cure is given them to wake them up. The problem is that said cure is rare, so it requires a lot of money to purchase.
• Player Party: Like video-games, humanity's real world hunting parties are this. They tend to have the standard tank, damage, healing and support fighters amongst the party to go out and hunt monsters.
  • At the start of the series, Sunghoon acts as support for a hunting party by performing the the bait role that lures monsters back for the hunting party to kill. The party leader is a large bald man that performs the tank role. Yoochan serves as a support tank while Changsik is seen using a large sword as a damage-dealer. In addition, several other unnamed damage-dealers are seen in the party, such as a woman who casts fire spells, and a man using a large spear.
• Playing with Fire: Awakened humans could end up learning fire-skills.
• Rhino Rampage: Some of the monsters within South Korea appear as large rhinoceros-like creatures. The first monster of the series that Sunghoon is seen baiting for his hunting party to kill is one.
• RPG Mechanics 'Verse: The rift event that resulted in monsters appearing on Earth led to people becoming "Awakened," which basically turned people into role-playing game characters that fight back and level-up against the monsters.
  • It becomes even more of a game-world once portals start appearing and staying in the world to act as game dungeons that need to be dealt with. The portals close once the portal dungeon's final boss is defeated.
• Shock and Awe: Awakened humans could end up learning electric-skills.
• Stone Wall: Those who are the tank class are usually this by absorbing the monster's attacks for the party's damage-dealers to kill.
• Super Empowering: When the event happened 10 years ago that resulted in monsters being brought to Earth, many humans were provided support from an unknown god to fight back against the monsters. Said support was humans being granted powers in the form of role-playing game characters where their given the ability to handle superpowers and leveling up to get stronger. Those who turn out to have such abilities are known as the "Awakened."
• Support Party Member: Baiters for hunting parties are this where their primary job is just to lure a monster away from a dangerous area so that the hunting party can kill it at a safer location. Sunghoon starts off as a baiter before he obtains the memories of his past life as a great sorcerer.
• Throw-Away Country: Before the start of the series, North Korea has basically been outright destroyed and overtaken by monsters as a result of the original monster rift from 10 years ago. In the current day, awakened South Koreans hunt the invading monsters in the areas around the Military Demarcation Line to keep the monsters out of South Korea.
• Took a Level in Badass: Sunghoon basically starts as an The Bait... but when he awakens the latent memories of his past incarnation, he gradually becomes one the most powerful mages on the planet.
• Weapon of Choice: Swords, spears, staves, guns, you name it. A vast variety of different weapons are seen being wielded by humanity and its hunters given that this is a series where humanity fights as RPG-like game characters against monsters.
