If speedometer is off is odometer off

I know on some of the cars back in the 60's & 70's that if the speedometer was off then the odometer was also off...

But with the newer type cars is that the same case??? In other words my speedometer is 5 miles an hour off - The gauge says 75 and I am only going 70... Does this affect the odometer also in that I am not showing as many miles as I actually traveled or is it showing more, or is it showing correctly????

Thanks for any help on this....

Your odo will show less miles than truly driven.

Check the tire size sticker near the driver's door jamb or on the door itself, then see what size tires are on the car. This could be the problem.

Probably not. Most speedometers are off by a few % (which is more noticeable at higher speeds).

Use the mile markers on the highway (or a known distance from google maps) to find out if the odometer shows the correct distance travelled.

Your tire size changes the speedo reading. Go to a speedometer shop and they can change the speedometer gear in the transmission to match your tires to the correct speed. When I changed to a larger size tire I was off almost 10mph, according to police, so I went to a speedo shop and they verified that and fixed it.
You odometer should not be effected.

the speedometer shows you how fast you are going, your odometer shows you have far you have gone, I would not expect the distance to change based on how fast or slow you get there; it would still be the same distance.

Since they work in conjunction with each other.. if the speedo is off, your odometer will be off as well.

Part of a vehicles design is the calibration of the speedometer and odometer. The transmission gears and the differential gears will determine how many revolutions the tires will turn in a mile. Part of the calculation is also used to determine the gearing of the speedo and odo. The tire size is selected by the engineers to make everything gel. Changing the tire size from a factory stock wheel to a monster jam truck tire throws all calculations out the window.

bingo!! we have a winner here. the odometer takes the same feed the speedometer does, thus if one is off, so is the other.

With the computerized speedometer/odometers you can possibly throw in another variable. On my last car, I used an app on my phone to tap into the OBDII computer, and it offered a vehicle speed option as recorded by the computer, and also a GPS speed. Now on my car, add in the regular speedometer and you get 3 different speeds! The computer speed was always 2-3 mph more than the speedometer showed, and the GPS never matched either! I wonder if this is on purpose to give you a cushion for tickets? But on my wife's Equinox, the computer speed is spot on with the speedometer and the digital display options.

Does odometer work if speedometer is off?

Speedometers and Odometers sometimes work in tandem but very often do not. It would depend on the specific model and options (possibly things such as stability control) on your vehicle but generally speaking most odometers will still track mileage even if the speedometer doesn't work.

Is speedometer connected to odometer?

speedometer, instrument that indicates the speed of a vehicle, usually combined with a device known as an odometer that records the distance traveled.

What if my speedometer is off?

If your speedometer stopped working and stays at 0 MPH, you should have your car checked ASAP. The most common causes of a speedometer that stopped working include are a faulty speed sensor, a broken gear on the speedometer, damaged wiring, or a faulty engine control unit.
