Internal conflict faced by protagonist in To Kill a Mockingbird

Scout v.s. herself: When Scout finds out about Atticus defending Tom Robinson she thinks very lightly on the situation. It is not untill the townfolk start to make fun of him for defending Tom where she starts to feel upset. She doesn't feel as if it is wrong but then is conflicted when the people start to call Atticus names. For example, Cecil Jacobs was mocking Scout at recess about it but Scout had to restrain herself because Atticus asked her to stop fighting. Scout finally comes to the realization that what Atticus is doing is actually right and doesn't care about what people are saying about Atticus.

Mayella v.s. herself: At the trial Mayella had a tough decision to make. She knew Tom did not rape her and that he was an innocent man but if she told the truth her father would go to jail. She was very conflicted within herself. She was scared of her father because she didn't want to be beaten. She decides that in the end that saving a man isn't worth takig another beating from her father so she lied and said that Tom really did do it.

Dill v.s. himself: Towards the middle of the novel, Dill was not happy with his family situation and did not know how to deal with it. He was given whatever he wanted but then his mom and new stepdad would just tell him to go play with it and get away from them. At first, Dill enjoyed the new toys but after a while he wanted affection and attention more than material possesions. Dill didn't get the attention from his parents so he decided he wanted to run away to where he could get it, Maycomb hanging around with Jem and Scout and living with his Aunt Rachel. Dill was conflicted as to what he should do, stay and recieve materialistic items without affection or run away to Maycomb to get attention and affection rather than the material possesions.
