After we accept your application, we will notify you if we need to take your biometrics: fingerprints, photo, and signature.
During your naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will ask you questions about your application and background. You will also take an English and civics test unless you qualify for an exemption or waiver. The English test has three components: reading, writing, and speaking. The civics test covers important U.S. history and government topics. See below to learn more about the test and the free study tools available to help you prepare.
Once you have successfully completed your interview and your application has been approved, we will schedule you to take the Oath of Allegiance. You are not a U.S. citizen until you take the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony.
What does it mean when USCIS says interview was scheduled? You will know your interview has been scheduled if your case status online changes to “interview scheduled”. This means you finally have a date for your interview. You won't see this date online, though. You will receive your notice with your interview date via physical mail about two weeks after this status change.
What does it mean interview was scheduled NDuring the interview, a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer will ask questions about your naturalization application (Form N-400), as well as questions you're required to study for the citizenship test, which takes place on the same day as the interview.
How long does it take for USCIS to schedule an interview for citizenship? The citizenship interview usually takes place about 14.5 months, on average, after USCIS receives your naturalization application (sooner or later for some applicants). USCIS will send you a letter — only once — with the date and location of your interview, as well as a list of any documents that you must bring.
