Intune Company Portal cannot be updated because it was refunded

I have a user with a DEP/ADE corporate owned iPhone that hasn't checked in since 9/9 and thus showing Not Compliant. When I called to ask him to open the Company Portal app and tap on Devices in order to choose Check Status, his Intune Company Portal app said it needs an update...but when he tapped the update option for the app it threw an error:

Cannot update app Intune Company Portal because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID.

He says he hasn't changed his Apple ID since setting up the device. I've never seen this before... any ideas? Even if he's not telling the truth, I need to know how to fix the problem. I know I can revoke a VPP device license, but how does one get the app to re-install? The only way I know how to have an app auto-installed is by group assignment and group mode: Required (which this user is a member of already)

Edit: since this is a VPP device licensed app... how is it even tied to an Apple ID? I thought these were by device serial.

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Cannot update because app was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID.

I get a message saying that an app cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID. I have only ever had one Apple ID, I did however change the corresponding email associated with the Apple ID a while ago. How should I proceed?

I downloaded one of the apps only a few weeks ago (for the upcoming Apple event) and it won't update for the same reason but I haven't updated my Apple ID email or used a different account.

Cannot update because app was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID.

@Bryan Hall yeah, you're pretty much spot on there.

User affinity is where the device is allocated to a particular user, shared devices (no user affinity) do not need to be set to kiosk (single-app) mode, this is ideal where devices are shared between multiple individuals, such as students, that require a host of applications.

No idea, currently having the same problem with Company Portal, assigning it as a required (VPP) app appears to cause a conflict/issue (check under Device-Managed Apps or Apps-Monitor-App Install Status) it does actually get the app to update. Still trying to figure out where the blame lies for this 'issue' at the moment. Technically it's a VPP app, issued from a token that is set to automatically update yet seems to be stuck at the version that was installed when the device was provisioned.

This is subjective, however I prefer to assign (to devices) any apps that are required, such as Teams or Office suite. This negates the need to issue a managed apple ID, and removes any reliance on the end user to operate an Apple ID. I don't believe you can assign non-VPP (or LoB apps) to a device...?

App protection policies (APP) apply to (Intune-licensed) users, these apply to MAM-aware apps regardless of app ownership. APP can be split between BYOD or Managed devices, with app configuration policies (containing the IntuneMAMUPN) being applied to managed devices.

Under App assignment use Available for enrolled devices and then (separately) implement device restrictions that would prevent users from enrolling personal devices maybe?

Hopefully these help, please feel free to ask if anything's not clear, and I'll update this if I find anything else on the company portal issue.

Intune Company Portal cannot be updated because it was refunded

While there are many of us still rely on manually downloading and installing apps from websites, the truth is that Apple’s Mac App Store has become much more robust. This is especially true following the beginning of the transition to Apple Silicon. Many of your favorite iPhone and iPad apps are now available on the Mac, and all you need to do is go to the Mac App Store to download them.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a long-standing issue when it comes to downloading or installing an update for an app that was already on your Mac. When this occurs, you might see an error message that says “[App Name] cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID.”

What Causes This Issue?

For one reason or another, it seems that the error message appears when attempting to download an update for one of Apple’s apps. This includes the likes of Pages, GarageBand, or Numbers, and does not seem to affect non-Apple applications nearly as frequently.

When it comes to “purchasing” apps on the Mac App Store, Apple associates these purchases with the Apple ID account that made the purchase. It doesn’t matter whether the app is free or if it’s something that you have to pay for, as the app is always tied to that Apple ID. This is the same way that we download and install apps on our iPhone or iPad.

However, this frustrating error message can occur if you purchase (or given) a Mac that was previously owned by another user. By default, the Mac may think that you are trying to download an update for an app that is tied to the old account instead of using your own. It’s one of the more quirky bugs that continues to show up with Macs, even as we are now into macOS Monterey.

There are a few different steps that you can take in the event that you are presented with the frustrating and confusing message above. There’s no sure-fire guarantee that any of these will work, but after performing all of the different troubleshooting steps, you should be able to download and install apps and updates.

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
  2. Click your name and profile image in the bottom left corner.
  3. Look for an option to accept the applications with your Apple ID.

This may not work, but it’s the first series of steps that we recommend that you should take. In the event that these steps don’t work, you’re not out of luck just yet. The next series of steps include deleting the apps from your Mac and then re-installing them.

Intune Company Portal cannot be updated because it was refunded

  1. Open Launchpad on your Mac.
    • Alternatively, you can open Finder, navigate to the Applications folder, right-click the application and select Delete.
  2. Locate the app that cannot be updated and is causing the error message to appear.
  3. Drag and drop the app from Launchpad and place it in the Trash bin on your Dock.
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the app.

Next, we recommend restarting your Mac to try and “clear out the cobwebs” that might have been left behind by the app after it was uninstalled. Then, you will want to go back into the App Store and download the app again just by opening the App Store, searching for the app, and clicking the Install or cloud icon (if it’s already attached to your account).

If neither of those options manages to work, and you are left unable to use the app, then there is one more series of steps that you can take.

Intune Company Portal cannot be updated because it was refunded

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
  2. With the App Store focused, click App Store in the Menu Bar.
  3. From the drop-down menu, click Preferences.
    • You can also open the Mac App Store and press CMD+, on your keyboard.
  4. At the bottom of the Preferences panel, click the Sign Out button.
  5. Close the Mac App Store.
  6. Restart your Mac.
  7. Open the Mac App Store app.
  8. Click the Sign In button in the bottom left corner found within the sidebar.
  9. Enter your Apple ID information.
  10. Click the Sign In button in the prompt.
  11. Locate the app that you were experiencing troubles with.
  12. Click either the Install or Cloud icon.

From here, you should be able to finally install the app’s latest version, while also being able to install any updates that will inevitably arrive in the future. If you continue to run into issues, we recommend reaching out to Apple’s support staff in order to get the issue resolved.
