Despite the two coming from completely different paths in life, once the Duke tastes Clara’s food, he must meet the woman behind the delicacies.

The pair end up having an affair, one which has consequences reaching far beyond their own lives.

Despite its historical setting and sweeping story, the show is a work of complete fiction and is not based on either a book or a real-life event.

Only the context of its setting is based on reality, with the time period of 18th century Spain being used as a vehicle to tell a wide-reaching story.

Some real-world historical figures even make an appearance in the series, further connecting the show to reality.

King Philip V (Joan Carreras) and Queen Isabel (Silvia Abascal) of Spain are two of the main recurring historical figures in the show.

The series shows how the political elite of the day operated, showing that much of society was run on backroom dealings and manipulation.

King Philip V ruled over Spain from 1700 to January 12, 1724, then again from September 6, 1724, until he died in 1746.
