Is Fergie in the new Black Eyed Peas song?

The Black Eyed Peas are revealing why Fergie stepped away from the music group in 2017, after over 10 years of working together.

In a new interview with Billboard magazine, Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap and Taboo stated that their former bandmate left the group out of a desire to devote herself to being a "great mom." Will.i.am explained, "We love her, and she's focusing on being a mom. That's a hard job, and that's what she really wants to do and we're here for her... It's really the way Fergie designed it, so we're respecting her design. We love Fergie, and we don't want anything but awesomeness for her."

Apl.de.ap added, "But unfortunately our schedule is displaced by [her] wanting to be a great mom, and she wants to focus on that."

Moreover, the group shared that her departure was ultimately for the best as it allowed them to introduce singer J. Rey Soul to the world. "I feel we're giving birth to a new artist, J.Rey Soul. I really want to give her ultimate praise and respect. What the fellows said—Ferg, she's doing the mom thing—but we have an amazing artist we're developing," Taboo said.

Fergie, one of the lead singers of the Black Eyed Peas, is no longer in the group, according to the remaining members.

The singer has been absent from any promo for the band's forthcoming album 'Translation' - their first in a decade - and now will.i.am has explained why.

He told Billboard that she was focusing on "being a mom" to her 6-year-old son Axl, whom she shared with ex-husband, actor Josh Duhamel.

"That's a hard job, and that's what she really wants to do and we're here for her, and she knows how to contact us for a retreat or a breakaway," he said. "It's really the way Fergie designed it, so we're respecting her design. We love Fergie, and we don't want anything but awesomeness for her."

He added that he and the remaining band members apl.de.ap and Taboo do try to keep in touch with their now-former bandmate. "We try to keep in touch," he said. "We reach out every once in a while and say our hellos and happy birthdays and Merry Christmas and Happy Easter. She knows where we're at! We're at the studio."

She has been replaced by another female singer, J. Rey Soul, who joined the band as far back as November 2018 - although she does not appear on the album artwork.

Fergie, who joined the pop band in 2002, has not yet commented publicly on the matter - although she did wish her bandmates well with their new album on Instagram.

The Black Eyed Peas gave an interesting (to say the least) performance to close out the 2020 VMAs. Performing "VIDA LOCA" and crowd favorite, "I Gotta Feeling," something was clearly different about the group. And no, not because of their light-up crotches, which frankly, deserve their own story.

The really important question is: who replaced Fergie?

Meet Jessica Reynoso, who goes by the stage name J. Rey Soul. She first got involved with the Peas when apl.de.ap selected her for his team on The Voice Philippines, where he is a celebrity judge.

J. Rey Soul was involved with the Peas' recent Latin-inspired album, TRANSLATION. She's featured with Ozuna on "Mamacita" and also appears on her own for "TONTA LOVE." When the Peas revealed this album, they also announced that Fergie was going to be stepping back for personal reasons.

"We love her, and she's focusing on being a mom," will.i.am said in an interview with Billboard. "That's a hard job, and that's what she really wants to do and we're here for her."

Though they miss their OG queen, this paved the way for J. Rey Soul to pick up the slack for a while. She's already performed with them in virtual gigs like the Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular and The Late Late Show With James Corden, but her excitement radiated through her performance at the 2020 VMAs.

"Can't believe I finally got to be on this stage!" J. Rey Soul said in the post. "From watching back home in the 🇵🇭 to actually being nominated and closing the @VMAS show LIVE!!" After thanking all of the Peas, she finished the post with "We just getting started 😼🔥"

For most of the 2010s, The Black Eyed Peas largely rested on their legacy built in the late 2000s with the help of Fergie as lead vocalist. After Fergie’s departure, the group remained alive in the form of its three original members will.i.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo, with the group tapping singer J. Rey Soul to round out the quartet. They returned after an eight-year hiatus in 2018 with their album Masters of the Sun Vol. 1 and followed it up in 2020 with Translation, a Spanish-filled project featuring collabs with the likes of Shakira, Maluma, Ozuna, Nicky Jam, and Becky G.

Today, The Black Eyed Peas are back with their ninth studio album, Elevation, and is intended to be just that — an elevation — of Translation. Shakira, Ozuna, El Alfa, and Nicky Jam return for new collaborations on Elevation, as well as other Latin music stars like Anitta, Anuel AA, and reggaetón legend Daddy Yankee.

The album’s release was fronted by the single “Don’t You Worry,” a collaboration with Shakira and David Guetta, following in the footsteps of their Shakira collab “Girl Like Me” from Translation. “Don’t You Worry” attempts to capture some of the tonight’s-gonna-be-a-good-night energy from the group’s smash 2009 single “I Gotta Feeling,” albeit with a more subdued approach suggesting sitting in the VIP section versus dancing your heart out on the dance floor. On other songs like “Simply the Best” with Anitta and El Alfa and “No One Loves Me” with Nicole Scherzinger, the group similarly opts for standard dance music fare. Meanwhile, group vocalist J. Rey Soul helps get folks moving on songs like “Double D’z,” “Dance 4 U,” “Guarantee,” and “Filipina Queen,” which range from electro-funk to straight hip-hop.

The Black Eyed Peas’ hip-hop sensibilities that first characterized their music around their debut over two decades ago are still present on Elevation, though in this new form they use electronic production as a way of elevating (no pun intended) what they were once best known for.

Will.i.am echoed this sentiment in an Instagram post announcing the album’s release. “No matter what level you’re at,” he wrote, “there’s always a level higher!!!”
