In 2019, the world came together and watched as season 8 of Game of Thrones premiered. It was an exhilarating ride met with mixed reviews.
That season, the Night King and his army finally arrived. And who else but Arya Stark was able to kill him? Then we had the relationship between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. Though they loved each other, they split once Jon Snow’s true lineage was revealed, and Dany ended the series by torching the city of King’s Landing and dying by Jon’s hand.
Other Thrones characters perished in that season, such as Cersei Lannister and many more. And in the end, we saw the Three-Eyed Raven himself, Bran Stark, ascend to the throne as the ruler of the Six Kingdoms — aided by the likes of Tyrion Lannister, Brienne of Tarth and more.
With that ending, some fans have been wondering if there will ever be more Game of Thrones, such as a season 9. After all, we’re in a time where we’ve seen plenty of shows get picked up again to continue the story years after they end. Take Dexter, for example, which had a highly criticized ending, similar to Game of Thrones. That series is currently being revived with a new limited series and given a second chance. So will Game of Thrones get a second chance too?
Will there be a Game of Thrones season 9?
Unfortunately, at this time, there are no plans to revive or reboot Game of Thrones past season 8. And as such, there will be no Game of Thrones season 9. HBO has not said anything about reviving the series. And no streaming platforms, such as Netflix or Hulu, have revealed any desires to pick up the series either.
Even though there’s still more writing on the way from George R.R. Martin as he wraps up the series, we can’t expect that to be an excuse for them to revive or reboot the show either. Season 8 was completed using the author’s notes in lieu of using the books for reference — so season 8 will still end up being loosely based on the ending that Martin writes into his stories. (Though, who knows? Maybe in the future, someone will be able to adapt his final novel when — or “if” — it’s ever complete.)
But, there is some good news if you were hoping for more Game of Thrones television after season 8, don’t worry because there is more in store. HBO has several Game of Throne spin-offs in the works. And the show that has made it furthest along so far is House of the Dragon. The series takes place around 180 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It’s currently filming and will premiere in 2022.
So we won’t get a continuation of the story post-season 8 unless HBO circles back sometime in the future. But we will get more of the world that George R.R. Martin created.
