Is Jeep discontinuing the Grand Cherokee WK?

  • The previous-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee is still in production, and it's being sold as the 2022 Grand Cherokee WK.
  • It's sold alongside the new model, which is codenamed WL and comes in both two-row and three-row Grand Cherokee L models.
  • The Grand Cherokee WK starts at $38,575, or $1545 less than the new model.

When is a new car not actually new? When it's a continuation model like the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK. This practice of continuing to produce an outgoing generation when the new model is already on sale certainly isn't a new idea, and Stellantis itself did this recently with the Ram 1500 Classic. And when the old one actually offers considerable savings like the Grand Cherokee WK does, it could be worth a look.

The old Grand Cherokee starts at $38,575 for the Laredo E trim level, which is $1545 less than the new two-row 2022 Grand Cherokee Laredo model's base price of $40,120. Both have the same 3.6-liter V-6 engine, although the old WK model has a simplified lineup without the optional 5.7-liter V-8 that's available in the new GC. The new model also offers a 4xe plug-in-hybrid model and a three-row Grand Cherokee L variant.

There are fewer choices to make within the Grand Cherokee WK lineup, as there are only three trim levels. The Laredo X trim level starts at $42,275 with a bit more equipment, and the Limited model starts at $44,420, $2015 less than the new Limited. Black, white, red, and gray are also the only exterior color choices. Four-wheel drive is a $1925–$2020 option on the WK depending on trim level.

Jeep won't say how long it will keep the WK model in production, according to Cars.com, so we don't know when it will eventually disappear from dealer lots.

Not a fan of the new-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee? Well, you need not go to a used car dealer to find a WK-generation of the midsize SUV. You can actually buy one "new" from Jeep without any miles from a previous owner.

That's right – Jeep is still selling the outgoing Grand Cherokee alongside the new one that made a debut in September 2021.

Labeled 2022 Grand Cherokee WK, the new-old (or old-new) model starts at $37,375 – a $1,345 savings from the $38,720 starting price of the new model.

The 2022 Grand Cherokee WK is available in three trim levels: Laredo E, Laredo X, and Limited – all available in either 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains. There aren't many options for the powertrain, though, as the tried-and-tested 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is the sole engine option along with the 8-speed automatic 850RE transmission.

In contrast, the new Grand Cherokee WL has the 5.7-liter V8 with 357 horsepower (266 kilowatts) and 390 pound-feet (528 Newton-meters) on its options list. And of course, the new 4xe plug-in hybrid that uses an electrically assisted, turbo 2.0-liter four-pot that churns out a total of 375 hp (280 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm). It can travel to an estimated 25 miles (40 kilometers) running exclusively on electric power.

What We Think Of The New One:

Basically, it's a choice between the old model with fewer options but with significant savings versus the new one with the option to go hybrid. This is a good situation for buyers since there are more options around.

Until when will Jeep sell the 2022 Grand Cherokee WK? We're not sure. Jeep's website still lets you build and order one at the time of this writing, but we're expecting that this will change towards the end of the year.

It appears that only the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine delivers 295 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque will remain. An 850RE 8-speed automatic transmission is standard and allows the Pentastar to have a tow rating of 6,200 lbs.

It also looks that the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 will feature 4 exterior colors. Those colors include Velvet Red, Diamond Black, Bright White, Sting-Gray (only available on Altitude). It goes hand and hand with the 2022 Dodge Durango (WD) color palette, which was confirmed by Dodge. The Durango and Grand Cherokee WK2 are built on the same line at the Detroit Assembly Complex – Jefferson.

Why is Jeep still making the Grand Cherokee WK?

Popularity is one big reason Jeep continues to make the WK. The previous-generation version remains in demand amongst buyers — it had the strongest sales of its run in 2021. That's highly unusual for any outgoing model and helps explain Jeep's decision to keep offering it.

What does WK mean for 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

For the 2022 model year, the previous generation Grand Cherokee is now branded as the Grand Cherokee WK. This means the Jeep Grand Cherokee WK is essentially a late model vehicle that is still being produced brand new, alongside the all-new Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L.

What is the difference between Jeep Grand Cherokee WK and WK2?

What Is The Difference Between WK and WK2? WK was the code name for the 3rd generation of Jeep Grand Cherokee made from 2005 to 2010. Compared to the WK, the WK2 was much more refined and the interior got a major upgrade.

What is the difference between Grand Cherokee WL and WK?

Jeep is selling two different versions of the Grand Cherokee for 2022. The first is the new Jeep Grand Cherokee WL, a redesign with the latest features and tech. The second is the older-generation Grand Cherokee WK. Confusingly, different incentives can make finding the best deal harder than you think.
