Late Friday and in the early hours Saturday morning, at least four tornadoes touched down in Kentucky, leveling communities, causing at least 74 confirmed deaths and untold destruction. 

More than 100 Kentuckians are unaccounted for, as of Monday morning.

The largest tornado leveled much of Mayfield in Graves County, also causing death and destruction in Dawson Springs and Bremen, among other communities.

Where is Mayfield, Kentucky? 

Mayfield is a small town and county seat of Graves County, located in the southwest corner of the state. It's close to larger Kentucky towns Murray to the east and Paducah to the north. 

It's 324 miles southwest of Cincinnati and 134 miles northwest of Nashville. Mayfield is home to just over 10,000 people, according to 2020 census records.

What happened in Mayfield?

Much of the city, including Mayfield's historic courthouse, was severely damaged or leveled by the tornado.

On Sunday, the National Weather Service in Paducah said preliminary estimates of damage appeared to be consistent with an EF-3 tornado, capable of producing winds as strong as 206 mph.

The Mayfield Consumer products candle factory collapsed with workers inside during the storm, and has so far led to the most fatalities, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said.

Kentucky Route 80 Business

Kentucky Route 80 Business (KY 80 Bus.) is a business route of KY 80 located in Mayfield, in Graves County. The main alignment of KY 80 has a 2.199-mile (3.539 km) gap within the city from the Purchase Parkway (Future Interstate 69) interchange to US 45 in downtown Mayfield. KY 80's main alignment resumes beyond the US 45 junction.
