Whether it’s the fireworks on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or the Ball Drop at Times Square, New Year’s Eve is always celebrated in extravagant style. New Year’s Eve in Melbourne is one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year. As it is summertime in Melbourne and most people are able to enjoy the public holiday the next day, many flocks to the city for this massive celebration. Coming into the city for New Year’s Eve? Plan and visit one of the popular free and un-ticketed Celebration Zones at Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Kings Domain. Featuring family-friendly entertainment including huge light installations, delicious food trucks, live performances and music as well as early-evening and midnight fireworks, the Celebration Zones are the best place to ring in the new year. This year, the midnight fireworks will be launched from the city rooftops, with the best views from anywhere you can see the city skyline or from a Celebration Zone. To make the midnight fireworks extra special, the display will be set to an eight-minute soundtrack, curated by Melbourne producer DJ Mike Katz, aka Harvey Sutherland On NYE, all train services will run to a normal weekday timetable with additional services after midnight. Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations will be open all night. Flagstaff, Melbourne Central and Parliament stations will be open until 2am. On Jan 1st, trains will run on a public holiday timetable with a night network running. Trams will run on a holiday Saturday timetable; the City Circle tram will not run. On 1 January trams will run to a standard Saturday timetable with the City Circle tram operating normally. People attending the celebrations on New Year’s Eve are strongly encouraged to use public transport services. If you are planning to catch a taxi, please note that it is very difficult for vehicles to get in and out of the city due to road closures. Taxi ranks are recommended as a safer option as they are staffed by a security officer in a distinct uniform and monitored by security cameras.
