Is My Girl a sad movie?

Everett

When a children’s movie is set in a funeral home, you know it’s going to be heart-wrenching. But My Girl — the 1991 coming-of-age story about Vada Sultenfuss (that name is the first tragic thing about this movie) and her too-young-to-be-romantic best friend, Thomas (Macaulay Culkin) — isn’t sad because of a funeral. It’s not even sad because Vada’s mother died. It’s not sad because her father has fallen in love with another woman who, while nice, causes mixed feelings in Vada, who worries that her mother is being replaced. It’s not even sad because of the awkward pain of preadolescent male-female relationships between kids too young and too naive to understand what that pain means. No, it’s sad because of bees. Stupid, stupid bees. We won’t ruin the ending, but we will say this: you’ll need at least two full boxes of Kleenex.

Wholesome Movie

A few curse words, some adult kissing - nothing risque though and very tasteful. No nudity, no sex, no drugs. Good message about true friends, true family and getting in touch with your feelings and sharing them.

Not as good as I remember from my own childhood

Good storyline to help discuss death, love, remarriage with children but we found it a little slow moving

Epic Kid's Movie

My Girl part I was one of my childhood movie, the ending of this movie made me feel sad because the Little Macaulay Culkin has passed away and also the cute little Anna Clumsky was innocent and has a pure acting. The movie is friendly to be watched.

Good family movie with good life lessons but probably too unsettling for under 11

This is a good family movie for parents with kids who are pre-teens. The language is typical PG one or two s-words, one GD and a couple hells and damns. Nothing too overwhelming. Jamie Lee Curtis character is a makeup artist who makes up dead bodies in Dan Aykroyd's funeral home and Aykroyd says she made up a body at one point to look like a "$2 hooker." It's said for laughs though. There is a reference to a girl getting her first period and although it is fairly obscure be prepared for your kids to ask some questions about that. As it stands in the movie it is not treated in a crude manner, rather just as a subplot of the trials the main character has to endure through puberty and adolescence. It is treated as a life lesson and handled with sensitivity, not with the means to be offensive. There is a brief violent scene as Dan Aykroyd gets in a fight with Jamie Lee Curtis' ex husband, no blood, very brief. Her ex also asks Curtis if Aykroyd is boinking her, which might offend some parents. Many people know of the tragedy which occurs towards the end of the film and I will explain it here as that is what makes the film the most objectionable for younger audiences. Macaulay Culkin yes everyone's favorite kid hero from Home Alone plays a supporting role of the main characters best friend. He is allergic to everything. The main character loses a mood ring in the woods and he goes to find it for her. He is stung by many bees and being allergic to them he dies from his allergic reactions. This could scare some children even more of bees so it is best to discuss that this is a rarity Culkin's character had being severely allergic and that it would very rarely happen in real life. While his actual death is not shown on screen there is a scene of the main character crying over his casket at the funeral and even non-sensitive children may be very upset by this scene as it is very sad. Fans of Culkin's Home Alone movies will probably want to see this one (I knew I did when I was little), for him but it is best to advise them ahead of time his role in this film could not be any different than his in the Home Alone universe. Additionally the movie really isn't about him it is more the story of the girl and her changes in adolescence. Additionally if your kids are Home Alone fans it may be best to discuss with then that Culkin only played a character who died in the movie but in real life is alive and well. As sad as the finale is it does provide some optimism about coping with death and the girl and her father come to terms with the challenges of life in a positive way. The journey getting there however may be a little too upsetting so I think CSM is spot on in this review. It is a good family movie with good acting, writing, and life lessons but it is one for older kids at best.

LIFE & DEATH

A LOSS OF: A Dear Friend And Many "LIFE" Altering Issues Within An 11-Year Old Or A 12-Year Old.

Tissues please!

Sweets enjoyed the movie, but cried during Thomas J’s funeral. This is a movie where some kids may be ready at 9-10 years old and some may still struggle at 13-14.

Amazing book

Many may think it’s to much of a emotional book/ movie for a child to read but I read this book at age 6 (I know most 6 year olds don’t read chapter books) and watched the movie and was it sad? Yes, but it didn’t do anything bad if anything it mad me have a understanding that not everyone my age was having good lives. I think that’s a great quality for a kid to learn and this book taught me many things even just as a kid reading it. This book was by far the most memorable book I’ve ever read and I truly recommend if your kid wants to read or watch the movie then let them

What age is appropriate to watch My Girl?

We award our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to this film for ages twelve and above.

What is the point of the movie My Girl?

It is about love and loss, and dealing with both at the same time. Before Vada gets the devastating news of Thomas J.'s death, she has to cope with Shelly's growing romantic relationship with Harry, which she views as an emotional assault on the memory of the mother she never really knew.

What is My Girl ending?

That the movie ends with Vada riding her bike with a new friend as the classic Temptations song “My Girl” plays in the background seems like borderline gaslighting.

What is the tragedy in My Girl?

What Parents Need to Know. Parents need to know that death is the main theme of this movie. Vada's mother died while giving birth to her (this is never depicted; only alluded to). A main character dies tragically from bee stings (again, the death is off screen).
